"3:10 to Yuma" is a great

Wow, I had never seen this until this weekend. What an underrated film. I absolutely loved it.

It's got a brilliantly simple story, with shades of "High Noon". Poor farmer watches dangerous, charismatic outlaw for the money, and soon finds himself outnumbered and all alone. I had never seen Glenn Ford outside of Pa Kent, so he was a very cool surprise. He's got an innate "goodness" feel to him, that works so well with the really sinister, weasely dialogue he gets. I love the scene in which he's running down Van Heflin's character for not being able to provide for his family. Then they cut to Heflin crying, which surprised me.

The whole thing has a much edgier feel than 1957 would imply. And it's nicely understated for a film from that time as well, even the music feels somber and subdued. A great film, and I really can't wait to see what they do with the remake, seeing as how they've got two fantastic leads in Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.

Question though. As I understand it, Crowe is playing the outlaw, and Bale's the rancher. That works fine enough, but I actually think it would work better the opposite way. Let Bale play the young snake of an outlaw, and Crowe the beaten down rancher.

Love this picture. Snappy, stylish and hella tense. I'm a huge fan of Delmer Daves, one of the unsung great filmmakers of the studio system. This and Dark Passage exhibit the same stark inevitability that what can go pear-shaped probably will in the most down, dirty and thrilling way possible.

I can't see how the redux'll improve since the picture's essentially been revamped with added corruption twist by The Gauntlet and 16 Blocks.

If you liked Ford in this, track down Fritz Lang's The Big Heat. He on fine, hard-boiled form in that, raising all manner of noir-avenging hell.

Until I saw this about five or six years ago, I just assumed Glenn Ford was the good guy. What a great surprise, what a great turn in this. Love this movie.

Glad you loved it, Stew. This is one of my favorite westerns, and in my top five for favorite Elmore Leonard adaptations (another one being Budd Boetticher's western from the same year, THE TALL T). I agree with Strax that it should not be remade, especially with Russell Crowe. I can't see him topping Ford's portrayal one iota.

Ford was such a great actor. My favorite of his roles is probably the most popular -- as the schoolteacher forced to deal with a pack of dangerous juvenile delinquents in THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE.

I've only seen one other Delmer Daves flick, a western called BROKEN ARROW with Jimmy Stewart and Jeff Chandler. It pops up on TV a lot. Highly recommended. Daves didn't quite have Boetticher's edge or style, but you can count on him to deliver lean, intense entertainment.

This was another one I kept putting off watching for months after taping it off the Encore Westerns channel, but I finally sat down to watch it about two months ago and loved it. Just a nice, taut western. I really hope Mangold pulls off the remake.
