Old Time Horror Radio

I don't have an ipod or belong to any mp3 or online radio communities. But, I was banging around online and found some pretty cool sources of old spooky radio broadcasts. Fun to listen to at work on my computer. Here's a cool page chock full of... Ghosts, Monsters, Mad Scientists and More!

Anyone else have any good sources?

I'm going to have to check that site out. I love old radio programs. I have a couple of cool old shows on tape, including Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre doing both "Dracula" and "Frankenstein," and a couple of episodes of "Arch Obeler's Lights Out Everybody" (a creepy anthology sort of like the "Twilight Zone").

I've got the Welles/Mercury War of the Worlds, but those others sound awesome as well.

You know, I've got a shoebox in my closet somewhere with a bunch of tapes of old radio broadcasts- not sure what they're from and haven't listened to them since I was a kid- but it's time to break them out and find me a cassette player. I had Dracula, Frankenstein, Sweeney Todd, The Invisible Man, Metamorphosis- all that good shit.

Great site Darkmite- I love this stuff.

If anyone has XM radio, they have a channel devoted to old time radio shows like this. It's not restricted to horror, but I'm sure they play some of it once in awhile. I think it's called Sonic Theatre, but since I never turn my radio from the O&A Virus, I'm not sure what channel it is.

Yeah, I have that one on CD as well. If you ever want a copy of any of that other stuff (tape only), PM me and we can work out some details.

Thanks.

What's a "tape"?

EDIT: Just kidding. I may have a working boombox somewhere...

One of my buddies sent me a link to this site that has adaptations of old radio-style Lovecraft stories available on CD. I haven't checked them out yet, but he said that they were pretty good.

The radio station I work at plays three shows on the weekend that plays all of this old stuff. Twilight Zone Radio Dramas, Imagination Theatre and When Radio Was. We've got stacks of CDs just sitting around here. I listen to them from time to time. Good stuff.

I found this site a year ago when I started listening to Suspense and Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar:

Great stuff - and amazing how well some of the stories on Suspense can pull you in 60+ years later.... and X Minus One is a good listen as well....

Excellent find! At the World Horror Convention a few years back, somebody gave a presentation on OTR, and I was instantly hooked (I had been intrigued by King's chapter on radio in Danse Macabre.) My friend and I downloaded a ton of OTR programs from newsgroups.

Anyway, DARKMITE8's link has "Three Skeleton Key" from Suspense, one of the all time best OTR stories (in my humble opinion.) Turn the lights down low, sit back, and listen. You won't be sorry.

This is a great homage to the old pulpy/creepy radio serials and Lovecraft, etc:

Suspense repeats on XM Radio are often quite good.

And, for this subject, Orson Welles performing Donovan's Brain on Suspense can be found at http://atlasradio.blogspot.com/2006/09/suspense-donovans-brain.html

I've been hitting the Horror shows over at Relic Radio with my 9 year old daughter lately.  Verra cool stuff.  Listened to "The Monkey's Paw" most recently.

I guess Fangoria is throwing their hat into the ring with online radio dramas. They just started Dreadtime Stories with Malcolm McDowell. They currently have an adaptation of Dennis Etchison's "The Late Shift" online, and it was a pretty good debut story. It is available for free until the end of the month and then a new story is posted at the beginning of November. Here is a link to the show.
