Dark Shadows 2004 Pilot

For some reason I figure someone around here probably saw this. What was it like?

Garish. Lots of seemingly unmotivated red lighting. Barnabas was made "young and sexy" (everyone was kind of cast younger), and Angelique is introduced right away (she was played by the hot oily blonde from Casino Royale). Lots of shock cuts, dream sequences, false scares (David likes paying scary tricks on Victoria) and a few unfinished background mattes.

Dr. Hoffman was played by Kelly Hu, but she only had one brief scene near the end at a hospital, when (I think) Carolyn or maybe Maggie is brought in after Barnabas attacked her.

It wasn't awful, but it didn't have any of the cheesy appeal of the old show.

How's Dark Shadows: The Revival Series from the 90's? I gotta crush on Joanna Going...

I haven't seen it since it was on. It was pretty faithful to the plot of the original series, with a couple twists and turns. I think it only ran to the first 1795 story arc before it was cancelled.

It wasn't bad from what I remember.

I've always wondred about this one as well.

Was it just a one hour pilot eppy or a two hour?
If it was the latter, one would think that FOX would have run it just once in the summertime or something ... But no, they just let it sit to rot "in the can" as they say. Shame.

Of course they did the same bloody thing with their take on the wonderful UK mini-series ULTRAVIOLET a few years ago. They filmed it, but never broadcast it or even released it on tape or DVD.

It was a one hour pilot, so about 43 minutes long.

It was WB, not Fox. And the effects seemed unfinished. Blue screens not keyed out and so forth.

The 90s series lasted for about a season. Not bad. A Barnabas Collins similar to Jerry Dandridge from Fright Night, good-looking, seductive and so forth but trying to get rid of his curse. Horror alumni Barbara Steel was part of the cast. Joanna Going was the reason to watch. I wonder what happened to her.

I just bought the DVD set for this one. It wasn't that bad. There were a few characters not in the original and a few that were combined characters of the original. No matter how many times they remake it, there will never be another Jonathan Frid. Ben Cross was ok but he was no Barnabas.
