Civil War #5

Thread Starter
Frank Castle returns to the Marvel universe and everyone keeps quiet? What's going on around here?
eh...I've been reading The Punisher since it relaunched under the max titles a few years back, So I was happy to see him a major player in the civil war, butttt
it doesn't seem like this is the character the Ennis has been writing, even in the new war journal he seems younger and tamer.

i'm guessing no-one is talking about this issue because it was pretty dull.
Because, like the majority of CW, it doesn't hold up to any sort of thought.

I mean... The Punisher WOULD NOT CARE about the Super-Hero/Human Registration Act. He has his holy war. That's who he is, that's all he is.

Also, the Jack-O-Lantern's name is not literal. But I digress.

Which is why Frankie said "when the good guys enlist criminals and rapists and murderers, it becomes my problem".

I don't buy it. The ski mask, the fact that he knows Tony Stark is employing the supervillains, etc. etc.

But that's just me.

Wait, this thing is still going on? What, they trying to make it last as long as the actual Civil War?

There were shipping delays.

One of the things about this crossover that I do like is Marvel appears committed to having a different status quo afterwards.

Early on, based on a few suspicious panels involving a background character, it seemed as if they were setting up Iron Man (and by proxy, Mr. Fantastic and Yellowjacket) as being victims of mind control. Doesn't look that way anymore.

I wonder how much of the Onslaught Reborn thing is going to make a difference...

Correct me if I am wrong, please, because I didn't read a single damn comic between 1992 and 1999. After that Onslaught garbage in the 90's, everybody was dead, correct? All the heroes were killed off, so they could do the "Heroes Reborn" reset, with all of the heroes being, uh, reborn... right?

I have a feeling, a sick sick feeling, that now with news that Onslaught Reborn is hitting the shelves under the Civil War banner, that they are going to explain that the last 10 years of books were populated by those "reborn" characters, and the real guys who died are coming back, thus negating all of that bad writing and shit continuity Marvel has been feeding us since the Heroes Reborn thing... I know it sounds very DC/Crisis, but when was the last time any comic company did anything original? This would explain why the Pro Registration side are all "evil"-ish.

Nah, nobody died in Heroes Reborn. A handful of heroes were sucked into a chilling alternate reality filled with the worst writing and artwork possible, then their books got delayed, then they all got delayed some more, and then they came back home with their tails between their legs. But nobody died.

Thanks for clearing that up. Makes me wanna "Diva my post", but I won't.

Onslaught Reborn is a vanity project. Since Loeb has superstar status, he's giving his friend Rob Liefeld work. It's a side thing. Odds are it won't even be referenced in any FF/Avengers titles.

First, I'd like to thank Richard for pointing me to the right thread. In my disbelief at how boring Civil War 5 was I passed this one right on by.

Anyway, what a bunch of crap. SPOILERS! - Yes, it was good to see good ol' Frank Castle take out Jack O' Lantern and Jester with head shots. But besides that this issue was just boring fluff. The Judas line at the end was contrived and I expect more of Millar. I've thoroughly enjoyed the series up until this issue which has just disappointed all around.

I cannot believe there was a delay for this.

And I don't see how cap can take in the Punisher, even though he wants to join their side. The man is a wanted felon and murderer.

What makes the Judas line worse is that Daredevil isn't in the United States right now. Yet it's something that Matt Murdock would say (he's a melodramatic Catholic boy). And Daredevil's sporadic appearances in this series were actually Danny Rand (Iron Fist), so.

I've pretty much given up on CW - I think of it as an Elseworlds series, now - but Cap and Punny have worked together in the past.

Normally I am a Marvel man, but, frankly,Marvel does not do the huge crossover stuff as well as DC does. "The Clone Saga" in Spidey showed that (in fact that is when I stopped reading Spidey until fairly recently) and what I have read of the Civil War has not impressed.
Marvel is still looking for a "Death Of Superman",and still falls short.
They cannot end this story line fast enough for me.

As expected, the Punisher stuff was weird and didn't really work at all.

First Punisher seems really eager to join up ("He's on OUR SIDE now, ULTRA-GIRL!"). Then he actually takes shit from ultra-girl and some other people in goofy outfits. Also, looks like his feelings are hurt in that panel where Cage asks Cap what they're going to do with Frank.

I think that's the only way for it to make any sense (and even then I'm giving it too much credit).

Marvel did not learn a damn thing from the Clone saga fiasco, did they?
Complex stories lines are fine, convuluted to the point of being incomprehensible are something else.
The Civil War saga has not quite the reached the point of idiocy that the Clone saga did when we found out that Peter Parker was not really Spiderman, but it's getting there............

The more I think about it I wonder if some Marvel staffer who is disgusted with the whole Civil War storyline managed to sneak in that scene where the Think essentialy told both pro and anti registration people "You Are Both Fucked Up".

One small highlight has been Casualties of War, the Captain America/Iron Man one-shot, by Christos Gage. Gage kicked things off with editor Andy Schmidt:

Quote:
“Obviously, I had to do it without messing up the larger storyline that had already been planned out, but aside from that I wasn't told ‘this is off limits.’ It was a matter of finding the right kind of story. I thought about it and said to Andy, ‘You know the diner scene from Heat?’ He replied, ‘You did not just ask me if I know the diner scene from Heat,’ like I'd just inquired if he knew who Jack Kirby was or something similarly insulting. That started the ball rolling.”
