Worst Uniforms in Sports History

I'm surprised that the old Houston Astros jerseys weren't on there...but I can't argue with too many of these choices. Well, maybe for the number one selection, which oddly enough I found more aesthetically pleasing than just about every lower ranked candidate.

The Canucks jersey at number two is just abominable. I cannot believe that lasted for that many years. How'd you like to suit up in that every day?
Someone on ESPN's Page2 did a list similar to this about a month and a half ago. But I've always laughed at the White Sox shorts... those to me were the worst ever.
I loved that Buccaneer helmet when i was growing up...
The guy from Page2 on ESPN actually has his own blog - www.uniwatchblog.com - that he updates every weekday. It's pretty damn awesome. His loathing for Nike spills all over the place.

This Fox list is terrible, though. Those Bucs jerseys are fucking classic, and so much better than the current Bucs unis which make them look like they're wetting themselves when they start to sweat. And the Canuck sweater is pretty cool, too. They're designed like old football jerseys, which I can dig. I'm still trying to find a place where I can buy the Bears throwbacks to the Bronco Nagurski era.
I believe there was a thread about this a few months ago, complete with imagery...
That list is horrid. And do they mean pro sports only? Because every list that I've seen has the University of Oregon on there somewhere.

I think it's safe to say that there's never been anything worse on a team's uniform - including shorts - than the faux-diamond plating on OU's unis. Sweet fuck how do those kids not realize how insanely stupid they look?

I think the Bucs update was MUCH needed.

But I just can't put the Bucs original unis on a "worst" list - so much of it - the attempt to wear orange like Miami, the gay pirate - make it awful, but in the most wonderful way. I'd put ANY Broncos uni or the Bills' new togs on there.

Worst though, is University of Oregon over the past 5 or 6 years - fucking HEINOUS.

Missed this but it's so dead on - UO had it VERY right with their green helmet/solid green jersey with yellow numbers combo they had not so long ago. Now they've let Nike conduct all sorts of heinous experiments on their jerseys to no good end.

And VaTech's orange shoulder patch is another example of something that's just fucking stupid. Joe Paterno looks better and better for keeping his unis generic.
You have to love those classic Buccaneer uniforms. It took a real man to play in those, and they were definitely distinctive. I was disappointed when they decided to just mimic the 49ers.

It is a pretty weak list.
The only thing more predictably boring than a "worst uniform" list with the orange Bucs jersey on top is a "best uniform" list with the extremely overrated powder-blue Chargers jersey on top. CNN has a list of the best-dressed sports teams and the Chargers are surprisingly and refreshingly nowhere to be found, but I swear I want to strangle Chris Berman when he basically starts ejaculating about San Diego's throwbacks. Oooh, it's a lighter blue, I can hardly contain myself.
Plus, I wonder what the hell is so bad about the orange Dolphins unis. Sure, they aren't the best matching uniforms, but they aren't any worse the Notre Dame's green jerseys or LSU's purple ones.
Don't forget the white helmet with the numbers on it.

Yeah, I don't get the powder blue love either - especially since it's basically the same design as their REGULAR togs but those never get mentioned as the tops at all.

Personally, I prefer their "throw-forward" unis or whatever you call a modern jersey.

newcastle united? fucking stupid bastards.

They do look like a rather buff bunch of refs or some escapees from the local prison.

Nothin' wrong with straight black and white - but the vertical stripes aren't the best idea I've ever seen.

heh

I remember reading an article a long time ago that called Bucco Bruce the "missing member of the Village People."

You do know Newcastle FC have a reputation as the Oakland Raiders of the Premiership, right? The uniform is fitting. I'm surprised Fox Sports wouldn't know that.
Maybe these folks dont like orange. My opinion is that the my local Chi Sox shorts stink (thank you Veeck), the Nuggets good for its time, same with the Bucs and Canucks (favorite throwback jersey). The orange 'Phin jersey sticks out but not as bad a the Bears no. 3, the futbol club I actually like sure they look like refs but you have to have some serious juevos to be a bad ass club. The NO/OC Hornets number 3, garbage, NY Giants away jersey, garbage, the old Raptors and Grizzlies jerseys, garbage. One I wish they brought back is the Chicago Bulls jersey from '96, red pinstrips on black was awesome.

So you're saying they've sucked for the better part of the past 20 years, and have a wizened, old owner who thinks it's still 1975?
Nothing really beats the 'Dique uniforms before they packed up for Colorado. I also think that the Florida Panthers have had some shoddy looking suits ever since their inaugural season.
I think if the Bucs hadn't been the on-the-field laughingstock they were for so long, people wouldn't have as much of a problem with the orange. I mean come on, the Patriots had a fucking center dressed like Paul Revere on their helmet, that's a hell of a lot more laughable.

I know a few people who, for some reason, think that old Pats logo was awesome.

I don't see it.
There are some people who think anything pre-1980 is inherently better than anything to come after it.

They're wrong.

For a long time my dream Super Bowl match-up was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Houston Oilers and that was just because I thought the field would look like a bucket of carnival puke.

Okay, I'm sorry, but those old Oilers uniforms were classic. Much better than the Flaming Thumbtacks.

Helmet logo aside, they were the most boring looking shit ever.

Seriously, there's nothing to look at there.

edit: the Oilers' unis were only better because of the massive numbers.

Sure I agree, but still, a play from scrimmage would look like a giant kid had barfed cotton candy and nacho cheese.

But for sheer horror, nothing beats this monstrosity from the World League. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you ... the Orlando Thunder:

'Cause you know, when I think of thunder, I think of lime lightning and blue clouds....

I hate the Bucs old jerseys. You're probably the only person I've ever heard say bad shit about them. I remember a few years back where the players voted it their favorite jersey in the league.

The powder blues are sweet. You're craaaazy.

They're not terrible jerseys, but the lovefest that goes on over them is waaaaay out of proportion.
God, I'd forgotten all about those WLAF unis.

How about the USFL? Check out http://www.oursportscentral.com/usfl/picsarch.htm for some archived pics.. gotta love some of those mesh jerseys.
Ah, the USFL. I used to be such a HUGE fan of that league. Steve Spurrier coaching the Tampa Bay Bandits actually gave us Bucs fans a few years of winning football in the Old Sombrero.

But yeah, they had some lousy uniforms. I remember the Orlando Renegades with this awful blue and black tomahawk logo that originally had a drop of blood that got removed when people complained.
While this is a fun topic, there are certainly some fashionistas on these boards.
I liked Paul Revere snapping because I'm a sucker for anytime a cartoonish historical figure is performing a sport on a uniform. If the Portland Trailblazers had Lewis and Clark playing a game of one on one on their jersey I think I'd be all for it. The Orange Miami uni looks good in my book, people have some kind of a disliking for the color orange, I don't get it, orange is fun damnit. I agree the powder blues hype is overdone, they look kind of gay actually, the Nuggets shiny powder blue jerseys look like they were designed by Clay Aiken. Although I do like UNC's uniforms and I even like whatever the hell the Jazz are wearing right now against LA, they look like they're wearing light blue pajamas.
One of the Trailblazers' vintage jerseys looks like meconium smells. I saw it on sportscentre and got dizzy.

Being from Austin, I'm required to love them; however, the Austin Ice Bats aren't going to win any fashion contests any time soon.

I think that's true. What the old Bucs uni was shooting for and what it achieved are sort of a case of "good idea poorly executed" - or TWO good ideas mashed up that should have been left separate.

Still, it's FAR from the worst I've seen.

Ah, minor leagues don't count, they'll perform ANY heinous fashion crime in the name of a few bucks.

To wit:

New Milwaukee Admirals jersey

Admirals special plaid jersey, which was a fun, tongue-in-cheek tribute to Milwaukee icon Bob Uecker, but still causes the eyes to bleed.

I've read that the original idea was to use green or aqua as the primary color, but they were worried about looking too much like the Dolphins, so they moved to orange. I think red would have worked and looked a lot less cheesy.

Anyone here give a toss that the NHL have officially announced they are tossing tradition out the window and going for a streamlined look for ALL teams next year? I'll toss up a few pics so you get an idea...

You sure those are official? They look a lot like some fan-made concepts I saw over on the boards at www.sportslogos.net.
The Arena Football League has brought us some of the tackiest unis ever. I love the old Tampa Bay Storm unis. Zubaz! I defy you to show me uglier.
