from the leaky cauldron

For the past few months, rumors have swirled about whether or not Warner Bros. was planning to pull the home movies of the first four Harry Potter films from shelves. WB Home Video has confirmed to Leaky that the first three films - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban will go on moratorium on January 5, 2007. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will become unavailable on January 22.
which means better version are finally on thier way, hopefully without any silly games

I don't know that it necessarily means better versions...just new ones.

I'm sure they're just looking to re-release them in new packaging next summer in conjunction with the final book/fifth movie's release. I'm sure they're gonna do this at least three more time in the next five years or so.

there are rumors of multiple commentaries such as the director and then the trio. Iit was universal we would already have 4 versions, so at least when WHV double dips its a substantial upgrade.

They did this also out of the need to make future cash

as over the Thanksgiving holiday, many HP DVDs were very cheap to the point that it was pointless to not buy them. With the basic versions so cheap no one would buy the expensive box sets that lined WAL-MART shelves. They cut the prices so low that they can't really get cheaper and that since we bought them so low we won't feel so bad in a little bit to pony up for some nicer editions.

I hope to one day buy these LOTR style in a nice book shaped case with tons of special features, retrospectives, bios, and with commentaries from the main cast, that now that they are older will not only consist of comments like "That was scary", "Hogwarts was big", and "Mr. Columbus is the greatest director ever...he gave us lollipops and wore a big funny hat".

I still find it hi-fucking-larious that they had to dumb down the title of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for America.
Not "dumbing down"... just a translation. We don't call cigarettes "fags" either.
A "Philosopher" in the States is somebody with a useless college degree, not someone who uses the arts of wizardry.

Good point. And, I think that if that hadn't been the first book in the series, and it had the kind of success behind it that we've now seen, they probably wouldn't have bothered with the title change. But since it was the first, I don't think it was a big deal that they didn't want to take any chances.

Actually, the term "Philosopher's Stone" is central to the pseudo-science of Alchemy, and has been referenced countless times historically in folklore and literature, including the Arthurian tales with regards to Merlin.

They changed the name because marketing people think Americans are so stupid that they needed the term "Sorcerer" in the title of the book so people knew it was about magic.

They'd didn't have to, that was a idiot marketing decision on the book-side.

We still get all our Pratchetts with the original british words and spellings (including lorries and treacle), because his Stateside publisher isn't an idiot.

Well sure, but I'd still like to repeat: A "Philosopher" in the States is somebody with a useless college degree.

Except almost every copy I saw was the full-screen version, so they just stayed right there on that shelf. Even for five bucks a pop I'm not paying for pan and scan.

Bastard! I have one of those "useless" degrees and it's... um... a great conversation starter? Yeah, that's it... a great conversation starter. I say, "I have a bachelor's in philosophy." And then, the person I'm talking to says, "So, you wasted your parents' money?" And then, I stare at them haughtily and say, "Oh yeah? Well, you've probably never even read Being and Time, jerk!"

Ahh, good times.

Too bad WB didn't plan ahead like NEW LINE and create LOTR-like extended-cuts for each of these films. It seems like a blown opportunity to have made additional sackfuls of million dollar bills.

I'm not interested in reinserted cut scenes, but comprehensive bonus features will be nice. I really wish they'd do screenwriter commentaries.

It's not that big a deal, really. "Philosopher" has a distinctly non-magical connotation in the states, and it would've caused a vast majority of readers a bit of unnecessary confusion. It added a bit of clarity and didn't change anything of substance.
