SMOKIN' ACES director Joe Carnahan wants to answer CHUD reader questions!
Common and Alicia Keyes give the best performances in the movie. Her character could have just been a gimmick, but she's very earnest and has a great screen presence.
I hate to say this, but I just saw the movie and I really did not like it. Just a heads up for people getting hyped.
Even with all the mixed views, ACES is the first film of '07 I'm hyped for.

Shameless aping of Stallone by Carnahan though.

Ask him about it.

As a fan who unabashedly loved Narc (I still remember being the only person in the theater the day it opened) I'm excited as hell about this movie. I'll be there with you opening day Moltisonti, mixed reviews be damned.

It's not going to be a movie for everyone. It's more in the CRANK/RUNNING SCARED camp. It's almost a non-stop shootout.

God fuck it Devin, you're not making this wait any easier.

It's just a month and a half! I don't want to overhype the film though. I am very wary of that lately.

I'll say the same thing to you when Hot Fuzz is a month and a half away.

I get what you mean though about not wanting to over hype it. The trailer makes it pretty clear about what kind of movie it is, so as long as I get the same rush I get whenever I watch the trailer, I'll be happy.
Running Scared was excellent and I thank Chud for turning me on to it. Smokin Aces, not so much. It will have its fans, and I don't really want to go in to my problems with it, but there's nothing as cool as the end of True Romance or anything.
Always great to see something like this, but it looks like there might be a few bugs in the software.

I'm wondering though, from the trailer I can't gauge if the film is more about stylistic fun or somewhat realistic ballistic tactics, maybe/hopefully a little bit of both?
Man, I was thisclose to seeing this today, but an extra ticket couldn't be attained. Fuuuck. I was really in the mood for some ridiculous violence, too.

Sounds boring.

Can't wait for this movie. I've love to send an intelligent, thoughtful question to Smokin' Joe, but I think that would be patently impossible.

This quote added to my interests already piqued by the trailers.

I love those other 2. Love them.

I'm going to send in the first batch of questions soon, so I could use a couple more good ones!
ask him why he thinks anyone likes running scared.
"Smokin' Aces," for me, is the anti-"Crank." "Crank" is kinetic, new and gonzo - just goes for the throat. "Aces," for me, feels something like an imitation of cool - like something a 50 year-old would make to try to get in the pants of the teeny-bopper crowd. A bit processed. But honestly, I've always felt that way about "Natural Born Killers" - just a movie that felt off, a little 'too hip' for the room - and plenty of people love the film.
Crank was kind of a let down though.
I don't see how anyone under the age of 30 could not like Crank.

I could, but I can't imagine how it was a "let down." I mean, unless you expected nothing but a stream of incoherent, disconnected violent images.
I've also been meaning to ask, do the questions need to pertain to Smokin' Aces, or can we venture into Mission Impossible 3/Killing Pablo territory?

People already have. First round of answers tonight.
I didn't like Crank because I expected it to be somewhat good, when in fact it turned out to be mostly forgettable. Hence, let down.
when i see an action movie i expect innovative or at least incredibly well executed action and/or violence. or maybe at LEAST a story that i care about. crank had a few cool scenes like the helipad, the sex scene and the car through the mall... and little else. there is a difference between crank and the transporter, but not a big difference.

running scared is a very well shot awful script performed by bad actors. no thank you, ill never understand the love for that.

on topic, i cant wait to read carnahans response!

god dammit i would have killed to see his version of MI3. fuck.
Pretty good stuff, like Sly he's not half-assing his answers.

I'm actually glad Carnahan didn't do MI3. That whole series is designed to make Cruise look great no matter what it means to the story and having a guy like Carnahan on board would have been pointless.
yeah, it would suck to see a no-holds-barred 100-million-dollar carnahan action flick.
Is it just me or is the poster very similar to the teaser posters from the Matrix Reloaded... with shots of the bodies of main characters cut off at the neck?
Really great answers. So much so that I decided to send one in myself.

How are the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE films no-holds-barred? Damn near every hold is barred.
Many thanks to Joe for answering my question. I only wish I hadn't been so tired from working on my final accounting project that I would've checked my grammar.
I don't expect Aces to be as wired as Crank, but I would like to see something I haven't seen before. And that includes any passing resemblance to Natural Born Killers.

The trailer has me damn curious, but hasn't completely won me over. I'm optimistic because Narc is a great little film.
I'm not sure what it is that has me so jazzed about this film. For me, it keeps going back to the cast and my love for Narc (it came out right when I started to get serious about movies, so it was the first of it's kind for me.)

The colors and subject matter remind me a bit of Cowboy Bebop also.

Rent

Actually, movie posters made up of square designs have become pretty popular these last few years.
I was definitely excited for and planning on seeing Aces, but I wasn't planning on seeing it theatrically until I watched the latest trailer and saw:

Fuck yes. And a quick glance on IMDB says Vladimir Kulich is in it too. Good on you, Carnahan. I'm there.
Good questions.

"I was consciously going to try and take the piss out of the 'Bourne' series"

IT would be interesting to find what he means by that. Can't really see what he would make fun of - the shakey cam ? The Bourne films are fantastic - the sort of 70s style film people complain don't get made any more.

I guess some people didn't want to make a really kick-ass Mission: Impossible movie.

Anybody know where I can get/read the Dan Gilroy MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 script? I haven't been able to find it at dailyscript or drew's. It sounds like it was a cool story and very topical to boot (ie, private military). Between the movie and Metal Gear Solid 4, awareness among young people could've been raised about PMC's in Iraq and beyond.

Plus, all the modern paramilitary corporation shit could've provided a new trend in the action genre, just as kung fu did in the late 90s and bands of sarcastic marines did in the 80s.

More questions! Let your imaginations run free as to what to ask.
He answered my question. I can now die happy. Wait no, I don't want to die yet.
I'm so pumped he's still on for KILLING PABLO. Thanks, Joe.
How come neither of my questions made the cut!?
So Bunny Lake is Missing then White Jazz then Killing Pablo.

Smokin' Joe is packed.
Not to bite the hand that feeds, but if there's any drawback to all this chatter, it's that it doesn't look like JC will be free to do his own material for another few years.
