He he. What crowd is he pandering to? LATINOS! Saw Mel speaking Spanish on a trailer for this on Univision. Saying that it's story about us and everything.

Yeah, it's pretty interesting. I think he's sort of smart about that - the hispanic population is impressively big. But will they mobilize like Christians?

Don't know, but latinos love action movies. And many who don't speak english just go to the movies for the action, so I guess this is up their alley.

Us vs Them

Gibson needs the audience and since it is not in English (or American as many around me refer to it as) why not go after a core Spanish speaking audience although claiming it is made for them is sort of pandering. My ethnic background withstanding, I make no movie going choices based on race as I was the only person in the whole theater watching "Waist Deep" anyway.

I think I read this in the EW interview with Mel, but it mentions that Latinos, as a whole, tend to see more movies (in the theater) than a lot of other social/ethnic groups. Something like 9.2 a year, compared to 7.1 for whiteys like me.

I'm not quite sure how they get that number, but thats' what they say.

The description "two hours worth of cutting, slashing, beheading, running and jumping", makes it sound like Braveheart in the jungle.

It has less story than BRAVEHEART.

Even less story.

I assumed that their would be a great story behind this movie but it doesn't sound like their is. I think I'm going to see it anyway the action looks great. I think the location where they filmed must look great too.

It makes sense to sell this as a latino version of the Swords-and-sandals pics.

I'm Hispanic, and I love violence. I'll be there, Mel. I'll be there.

Well, you are a hot-blooded people.

Going after a Spanish-speaking audience makes no sense, seeing as how the movie isn't in Spanish.

It's not the language he's after. It's the heritage.

I was watching the actors from the movie getting interviewed on Univision this morning. All seemed pretty happy to be part of the movie, but is just probably actors being actors.

An empty action movie posing as a profound film because it's set against an interesting historical background? Sounds like a Mel Gibson film, alright.
Well, if this is a straight ahead historical action adventure film, it sure isn't being sold as one. Where are the promos with a quick cut trailer and the requisite 'boom', 'Boom', 'BOOM!'-on each cut sound effect, on, say, Monday Night Football or the Sunday games? Where are the promos tying in with Maxim, a soft drink or energy drink, or a video game? I guess Gibson is relying largely on word of mouth.

I wonder if this will have optional spanish subtitles for some areas in the US. For that matter.....Do any theaters/studios run spanish subtitled movies in areas with a higher population of spanish speaking people in the US?
