A movie like Brainscan is unique. The characters in this film only exist in the time that the movie was made. Brainscan can almost be called a period film today due to its embracing the troubled...

TLDNR REVIEW: “Amazing Spider-Man” is almost good, just like powdered mashed potatoes are almost real.
Look, guys. I realize that anyone that is reading this review has already made up their...
I was happy to see that Rolling Stone stuck by their 2-star review and ignored The Killers. I'm surprised Neil Young's LIVING WITH WAR didn't make the cut.
I know collections and best-ofs are usually disqualified, but I can't stop listening to the Chavez collection Better Days Will Haunt You. It's basically everything Chavez ever recorded for Matador. And I only mention it because, I don't know how it happened, but back when they were around, Chavez totally slipped by me. Never heard them. And this was the type of stuff I was listening to back then. Guitar driven math type rock. These guys are awesome, as well as this set.
I'm surprised Neil Young's LIVING WITH WAR didn't make the cut.
I can't shake this image of the editor who compiled the list sitting nervously in Jann Wenner's office with Wenner demanding a correction to this in the next issue under the threat of having to conduct the next Lindsay Lohan interview. Considering Young's a perennial RS favorite, that's almost got to be an error, since Living With War is his best rock album in some time.

The choices in bold are the best of the best this year. All the other albums are those that I've really enjoyed this year, but most of them, I must admit, I probably won't be listening to them past 2007.
Johnny Cash: American V- A Hundred Highways - Rubin continues to show that he's Cash's best producer of all time. I love the stomping bass added to "God's Gonna Cut You Down", it has Johnny's last written song "Like the 309", and he still manages to craft a great album. That he was literally at death's door gives it an added compelling quality.
Ghostface Killah - Fishscale - One of Wu-Tang's best members, this is just a great solo album. Solid all the way through. If you like rap (which few here seem to), this is a great album.
Bob Dylan - Modern Times - I'm a Dylan fan, and I can't say anymore than has already been said.
ST - Be Your Own Pet
The Blow - Paper Television
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
The Liars - Drums Not Dead
Boris - Pink
Tom Zé - Estudando o Pagode: Na Opereta Segregamulher e Amor

Love is All - Nine Times That Same Song
I just got into that Thermals album on the word of mouth it's getting and I love it. The anti-religious stuff is just what I needed to hear it seems. "Here's Your Future" grabbed me like few songs have recently.
I really regret not getting into Peter Bjorn and John earlier. The start of Young Folks really reminds me of the days when Beck was clever and really enjoyable. Overall, the album sounds much like I'm From Barcelona, but if Barcelona is aiming for more a childish sound, this one is going for the young adult.
Probably my 10 favorite new releases in 2006 ==>
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam

Los Lobos - Town and the City

Bob Dylan - Modern Times
Loose Fur - Born Again in the USA

Stanton Moore - III
Pearl Jam - Live at Easy Street
Beck - The Information
Trouble: The Jamie Saft Trio Plays Bob Dylan
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians - Stranger Things
It's all about Neko Case this year. That CD just kicks my ass. Amy Winehouse a close second.
The list -
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
Boris - Pink
Tokyo Police Club - A Lesson in Crime
Black Keys - Magic Potion

Nas - Hip Hop is Dead
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam

The Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldiers
1. Sick Of It All - Death To Tyrants (these guys can do no wrong. even as "hardcore" wanes in popularity, every album SOIA puts out tops their previous efforts)
2. Mastodon - Blood Mountain (the BEST metal album in the last couple years - other than Leviathan and High On Fire's Blessed Black Wings)
3. Slayer - Christ Illusion (once saw a license plate that said fknslyr. no kidding, but I'm originally from northern Ohio, so it's not really that surprising)
1. TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain (GODS!! "A Method" is pure bliss)
2. Beck - The Information (Almost as good as "Sea Change")
3. Bob Dylan - Modern Times
4. Gnarles Barkley - St. Elsewhere
5. Tom Petty - Highway Companion
