I'd argue that Benson was a better character on Soap than he was on his own show.

I'd agree with that, Richard. He was definitely more mean-spirited on 'Soap', especially in the first season. I certainly won't deny the fact that the character itself belongs on the list, though.

Somehow, we lost Dale Cooper at #64 - which cannot stand.

While on the surface he may appear to be the lone wolf cop who does anything to solve the case, The Wire accurately shows why he's like this: he's a complete fuckup. Lone wolves often are that way because they cannot handle anything else in life but their job. He drinks too much, he sleeps around and he flicks the bird to authority at almost every turn. And yet, he's the (human) character the show always comes back to (granted that the entire city of Baltimore is the main character). He may be a complete screw up in real life, but that never means that his heart isn't in the right place. A straighter, truer cop there never was.

One of the most complex, maddeningly likable villains ever to grace the small screen, Baltar isn't simply a mustache-twirling stereotypical bad guy. At first, he's simply responsible for helping wipe out most of humanity, but his crime is more in not admitting his role than in the role itself. But then, when he's put on trial, we're this close to feeling sorry for him, as Apollo defends him for all the right reasons, not knowing just what Baltar's responsible for. Along the way we're treated to Callis' amazing performance -- reacting to a character that isn't there half the time, wrestling with his conscience, becoming a messiah. It's a bravura performance on a show full of them.

The absolute backbone of one of the greatest television shows of all times. There is not a single moment of Falco's performance that doesn't match and complement Gandolfini's. Maintaining the most morally dubious position of any character on the show, Edie sells it and turns Carmela into one of the most dynamic characters on the screen. From woman scorned, to impassioned partner, to fed-up housewife, to stone-cold manipulator, to Mobster Wife, Edie Falco covers it all. Carmela's frequent crisis of conscience displays the depth of a woman reaching out for goodness, while her shallowest moments of manipulative selfishness ring as completely understandable and human.

Dan Fielding is the most vile, smarmy, smug, self-obsessed, sex-crazed lawyer in the history of television, and he is also my favorite. His quick witted insults and irrpressible sex drive, were a brilliant way to hide his lonlieness and loyalty to those who would put up with him. He would do anything in his power to screw over everyone else in the courtroom if it ment him getting ahead, but defended his coworkers from outside attacks. Only in the 80's could an assistant D.A. have a bum as his unpaid personal assistant.

You stole my next pick, but I have to quibble a bit with your characterization. What makes McNulty so great is that he's not a straight and true cop. He's what Martin Riggs would be like in real life, and over the course of the series you really get to see why even though you're glad he's there to light fires under the asses of the bosses, you'd never, ever want to work with him. Charming as he is, the Bunk is (as usual) right early on when he slurs at him "Jimmy, you just no good for people..." And for as often as this show gets wrong-headedly compared the Shield, this is where they actually meet. Vic Mackey is the same way, but blown up to 111; if McNulty is a flu carrier, Mackey is a walking cancer to everyone around him.

DCI Gene Hunt - Phillip Glenister - Life On Mars (UK)

It speaks volumes for both the character and the actor portraying him when they spend every scene of a TV series standing next to John Simm, and completely steal said scene at least 90% of the time. Gene Hunt is the embodiment of both what's right and what's wrong with the modern era. He speaks his mind without fear of reprisal, he drinks (on the job), he smokes (constantly), he isn't afraid to beat a confession out of someone (anyone!) and while this might have all been relatively standard practice in the 70's where he comes from, watching him engage in such actions 30 years later strangely makes him come across as the ultimate bad-ass. He sees himself as the old west sheriff of Manchester, and as much as he loves his Mk3 Cortina more than life itself, you get the feeling he'd trade it in for a horse and a tin star in a second.

I expect to see a lot more The Wire actors in this thread. Come on people.

Schwartz, and granted I haven't seen season 5 yet, I guess 'straighter and truer' is glossing over his more...irritable tendencies. What I was getting at is that, personally, if I were ever murdered, I'd want Jimmy McNulty on the case. Many of the cops on the show treat their job as just that, a job, but with McNulty, there's always this fire, this hunger in him that's yearning to do right by whoever. It never goes away. In other words, he takes his work home with home every single night. That's why he goes the extra mile to discover what really happened to D'Angelo, and why he tirelessly goes about investigating the floater in season 2. He treats it more like a calling, though he does it because, and I think Bunk said, he'd explode if he didn't.

Bubbles is the human face that The Wire put on the average junkie you see in any American City on any given day. And in the hands of Andre Royo is given a truly great sense of humanity. The way that he can go from making you laugh hysterically to just absolutely crushing you heart. He also is a brilliant man in his own right with a photographic memory who is a great snitch. His arc over the entire run of the show is just awe inspiring and in a show of great characters I would argue that Andre Royo gives the best performance.

You need to see 5 like now. A lot of this is addressed, and even echoed in your exact words, but he also takes things farther than ever before. And its never been some holy quest for him to clean up the streets. Sure, the constant "misdemeanor murders" in the ghetto piss him off, but that's not what drives him. It's intellectual vanity, umbrage at the thought that these mopes could get one over on him, Jimmy McNulty, the smartest guy in the room. There's a scene early in 5 where he's arguing for pursuing Marlo more aggressively and he shouts "He does not get to win! We get to win!" That's it in a nutshell.

This only makes him a better character, imo.

I know a lot of people on this board love Sunny, so it's surprising to see that there are no characters on this list. I gotta go with Charlie Kelly, I'd say he's one of the best lovable losers on TV right now. He's short, the survivor of a botched abortion, dyslexic, a wild card and likes to huff paint; but at the same time can be an evil genius. Plus Day has great comedic timing.

You left out "probably the victim of childhood rape", but other than that, great choice. The only reason it got this far without him is because when the first 70 choices were made, Sunny only had 1 or 2 seasons and much smaller audience.

One of the greatest characters out of one of the greatest novels of all times. And Marvin the paranoid android might very well be the most famous of Douglas Adams plenty creations. The manical robot with the brain the size of a planet yet rarely given the chance to display it is responsible for the most frequent and hilarious one-liners out of the sheer treasure of material. While never actually paranoid he remains sorrow and demeaning the entire series. Though he shows great stoicism and earnest to fulfill the burdens that are laid upon him by his fellow hitchhikers. Mostly he just waits for millions of years for his employees or to park space ship.

And most of the time he doesn´t really enjoy it.

Moores delivery of Marvins morose lines kills in the BBC version. Which gets most of the pivotal things about the adaption close to perfection where the movie failed. And not a small part of that feat does belong to the dispiction of Marvin and his monotone and depressed voice. Albeit the series has production values that would turn Ed Wood pale it works like a charm.

I believe it's more that his mild retardation is what keeps from realizing that "Night Man" comes off as a song about childhood rape.

What madness is this? No madness, just the honest truth. While Lost is most famous for its sprawling and intricate mythology, the thing that has kept me interested is the emotional journeys of the characters. And there's no characters I care about more than Sun and Jin. When we first meet Sun, she seems a meek, pathetic character, unable to stand up to her dragon of a husband. But then we learn more and more about them, and realize just how deeply they love each other. And especially, we find out the true strength of Sun's character. Because I bought into Yunjin Kim's performance, for me, the Sun and Jin episodes were often more interesting than the ones that moved the plot forward. In Lost, that says a lot.

I think the numbering is off. We should be on #89 heading into #90.

It's only off on the very last one. No big changes, just make the Sun into 89.

Yeah, Friends deserves a lot of derision and How I Met Your Mother does the concept of people entering their 30's and growing up a lot better, but Chandler was a great character and Matthew Perry was responsible for that. Chandler was the product of a broken home, his dad is a transsexual, his mom is a slut and famous romance author, and he hates Thanksgiving because of a childhood trauma. He had an acid tongue and a quip for every occasion, and had no idea how to have a healthy relationship with a woman. Loyal to a fault to his friends Joey and Ross, his banter with roommate Joey was often a highlight of the show. When he proposed to Monica and choked on "You make me happier than I ever thought I could be", you get it. He's an emotionally broken guy slowly finding his way while suffering at a job he hates and he hides behind sarcasm. A wonderfully developed character.

A lazy, (literally) crazy drunk whose hobbies include hating her life and disappointing her parents, Jaye is the kind of character we can all identify with on one simple level or another. But in just 13 episodes she was written into much more, with complicated relationships to a full cast of friends and family. She also made some of the finest, weirdest jokes I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. The real reason, though, for Jaye's place on this list is Caroline Dhavernas's face, which can form all manner of unique contortions, expressing hilarity and despair, separately, within two seconds. The final moments of the final episode demonstrate this beautifully, and all you fucks who haven't seen Wonderfalls should go check it out.

This show never quite caught on like some of its other properties, which is a shame because McKidd's grade A, certified badass alone made it worth watching. Vorenus was one seriously angry motherfucker, but he used his tremendous sense of honor and duty to bind his murderous rage into something manageable (much like the character of Bullock in Deadwood, but I think it comes across more clearly here), at least for a few episodes at a time between plentiful massacres. Despite being borderline psychotic, he never really dipped into unlikability, and his hot/cold running relationship with fellow slaughterhound Titus Pullo was an island of genuine sweetness in a lake of blood.

Yeah, but according to Mac Charlie was apparently really hyper and biter as a kid so....

The show is just serious enough to give Donovan enough to work with, while not taking itself too serious at the appropriate moments. James Roday brings an unmatched level of manic energy to the role of Shawn Spencer. And even more amazing, it's not a one-note performance, as it could easily have been. Spencer appears to be a man-child, but it is as much a performance as his "psychic powers". But really, essentially it's all about the crazy dances.

I was going to put Shawn, but feared he was too new, but yeah, Roday is great. And he's done very well with the more emotional moments of the show.

He'd also be a great Fletch.

In arguably "The Best Show of the Decade that no one watches" (because even "The Wire" gets tons more chatter than "FNL"), Kyle Chandler has carved out an iconic character that very few have seen. He's the father figure some of his players need and the coach they all desire...but that is nothing compared to the concerned father he is for his teenage daughter nor the loving husband he is for his wife. A man that is pulled in countless directions by everyone he encounters, Eric Taylor always makes the right decision. They don't always turn out for the best, but there's no arguing that he's making the correct call. The people in town come to him for help and advice because they see that he's the best there is among them in that little town of Dillon, and that's what we strive for in those that coach & teach our children.

Soap didn't enable him to fully show off his range with the character, yes he was much wittier because he had less screen time and he was able to make the most of that with the character but once he rolled into his own show he was able to change things up and add nuances, facial tics and dead pans. Lets also not forget his great chemsitry with Rene Auberjonois and Inga Swenson ( had to pull her name up from IMDB ). There's a reason this show lasted 7 years and it was that chemstry.

If ever there was a character that should be in the top 10 of any list, it's Hawkeye. Alda took this character and made it his own and over the course of 11 years and brought us a little reality with how grim war was while delivering up the laughs and smiles that make it more palpable. He battled superiors, crazy army regulations, alcoholism and a mental breakdown all while trying to save lives and perhaps his own sanity in a war that lasted less than the show was on the air.

This series has changed the face of TV in the nineties. The quirky relationship of Mulder and Scully has always been the center of attraction for viewers and creators alike during the nine season run. And while I liked to follow their adventures they never made the series for me.

This woul be true for the CSM though. He was at the center of the mythology of the series without ever becoming a leading character. He mostly showed up for a few shots during an episode to order or scheme some paranoid conspiracy with his fellows from agencies and institutions all over the world. While I seem to remember that he was tied into Mulders private life later on I think his full agenda and relationships to the characters have never been fully revealed. But that might be because of the way Carter fucked up the mythology in the later seasons by directly contradicting established plot points.

But the fact remains for me that this originally creepy background character was the most intriguing part of the show for me. His powers and knowledge seemingly dont know any bounds and he is a character that should frighten the viewer by the mere gravitas of his deeds. And he succeeds.

Sir Harry Pearce – Peter Firth – Spooks (MI5 in the US)

Spooks is hands down the best spy series on TV. And Harry Pearce is the rock that holds it all together. The head of Section D is not afraid to get his hands dirty or make the tough calls when needed. Harry is a complex man but in a TV show full of double dealings and very grey lines you always know the call Harry makes is the morally right one.

No simple feat when you consider some of the utterly bastard like things he has had to do through the series. But for me his best hour has been Setting up the head of the Russian spy operation in the uk as a double agent , letting him think he would be offered amnesty and then killing him, all because he arranged the death of one of Harry’s agents.

Pretty much the only real character in the entirety of 24, and the crux of the first - and maybe last - genuine heartfelt moment the show every produced. Berkley is a great utility actor whatever role he finds himself in, but Mason, for me, is his crowning TV glory. His reltionship with Jack is, again, pretty much the only truly complex one in the entire series. 24 went downhill from the moment that nuclear bomb exploded.

103. White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler - Richard Schiff - The West Wing

I said earlier that Toby is the conscience of the Bartlet White House, and, having recently re-watched the first two seasons, I stand by that claim. Just watch how he's unable to let a homeless veteran die with no one giving a damn in "In Excelsis Deo". Or how deeply personally he takes finding out the president has been lying to them about his MS. And because Schiff so underplays the character most of the time, those times when his righteous anger is unleashed are all the more effective. Toby really got screwed during the final season -- there's no way he would have ever leaked that info, and I, like Schiff, still believe he was covering for someone else -- but not enough to diminish the legacy of the character.

My favorite thing about Toby is that in all his heated debates, with staff, with superiors, even with the president, he was on the right side of the argument like 90% of the time.

Love her or hate her, for at least the first 5 seasons of her show, Roseanne Barr had created an iconic TV mom that broke the mold of how sitcom parents acted on television. Her portrayal of a blue collar mom and the various "real world" issues she and her family took on during the series was unheard of at the time. Then she started believing her own hype and the show went to shit, but it did give us Sarah Chalke, so it wasn't all bad.

I almost went with Tobias Zachary Ziegler myself. Definitely my favorite character on maybe my favorite show ever. I get choked up in the Season 4 finale (both parts - "Commencement" and "Twenty Five") when he proposes to his ex-wife, when he tells the staff about the twins being born and when he learns that babies come with hats. The shit that Burt has to go through over the 4 seasons of 'Soap' is pretty legendary: The Mafia goes after him, he goes through a phase where he thinks that he's invisible, and he gets kidnapped (and replaced) by aliens. All of this is absurd, but it's carried out with so much manic glee by Richard Mulligan that it's captivating. He is arguably the heart of the Campbell side of the family.
