The youngster with the filthiest mouth, the filthiest mind and the filthiest mom, I think everyone has at least a little bit of Cartman in them. There is some group or person that just unnerves you like Jews or Hippies aggrivate Cartman. He is the source of the most laughs on possibly the funniest and most relevant cartoon to ever be created.

Blackadder in his various incarnations embodies the worst elements of human nature. He is greedy, cowardly, vain, and an egomaniac. Starting with season 2 he is also a very shrewd observer, and never hesitates to take others down a peg or three when they most deserve it. On top of all this, by the end of season 4 he shows a fatalist determination that, while perhaps not heroic, is certainly tragic and genuinely moving. Not bad for a character who started out as little more than an excuse to make jokes out of Shakespearean references.

Hall's performance is at the same time hilarious, terrifying, and heart-rending. When was the last time anyone wanted a serial killer to keep his girlfriend, or know the meaning of love?

The show may just be getting started, but the character certainly deserves a place in the top 250. Long live DEXTER.

The charm. The wit. The brains. The mullet. MacGyver. The man could get out of any situation with the Swiss Army knife he always carried and he could make something out of nothing. The show made a semi-star out of Richard Dean Anderson (who would go on to star as Col. Jack O'Niell in Stargate SG-1) and put the character of MacGyver into pop culture. The Simpsons would also use the character as a the butt of many jokes involving Patty and Selma and in one later (and truly horrid episode) Richard Dean Anderson would guest star as himself. The character also returned for a MasterCard commercial aired during last years Super Bowl which had Anderson reprising the role.

MacGyver... his mind is the ultimate weapon!

I liked the MacGuyver episode of the Simpsons.

I like how I posted a couple TBS Superstation rerun all stars and then Brendan provided the two top dogs from the USA Network circa the nineties.

Because he's a simple and highly specific joke (what if Bill Shatner actually had Kirk's job?) that somehow became the most consistently funny character on one of the funnier shows out there. The genius is such that you don't even need to be familiar with Shatner or Trek for it to work like gangbusters; all of his lines seem to be just as funny, if not more so, out of context. Whether this is due to his very sexy learning disability, sexlexia, is not clear at this time . Examples:

"She's built like a steakhouse, but handles like a bistro!"
"The spirit is willing, but the flesh is spongy and bruised!"
"Kif, I have mated with a woman. Inform the men."
"If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes should fall like a house of cards. Checkmate."

But don't let the Velour Fog's prowess with the ladies (and lady-like aliens) fool you. He's also a 25-star general who won't hesitate to deliver the president of Earth to invading aliens in a burlap sack. I don't know about you, but I feel safer knowing that he's out there in his lovenasium, keeping the distant, animated future safe for portly chauvinists everywhere.

I missed this a few years back when you started it, and couldn't have been more stoked to see Number 6 already get his love as that was the first one I thought of.

In an ensemble cast on a show which gathers more than it's fair share of attention, it's not easy for a plain looking guy like Michael Emerson to stand out. But stand out he does in the character of Ben Linus, a character who we still know entirely too little about but who is certainly a man of conviction. From his first mousy appearance on the show where only small hints were given that he may have a larger role than we were being shown to the engine that drives the show now and who everybody is trying to figure out. You want to hate him, and sometimes do, and that's strong praise for any actor to accomplish. Even when he's at his worst though you can't help but feel we don't know the whole story and when Emerson inserts that little nagging doubt in your mind that Ben might not be so bad after all only to have Ben walk out of the scene smirking that evil smirk...man I can't get enough.

In an age in which precious little science fiction was taken seriously by the entertainment industry, Leonard Nimoy received three emmy nominations for his portrayal of Mr. Spock. Bringing charisma and likability to a character who refuses to show emotion is a tall order for an actor, but Nimoy pulled it off. His character is a modern icon on the order of Superman, Dracula, or Sherlock Holmes. While some credit certainly has to go to Roddenberry's determination not to listen to network suits who asked that he drop the alien, Nimoy's presence is what really made this character.

As a character who's dialogue is 99% one-liners, it's hard to believe that little Ralphie is probably the single most consistently funny character on the show. Thanks in no small part to Nancy Cartwright, even the simplest things ("I almost died!") are fucking GOLD with her delivery. And the few moments when he actually has to be a character and have some real interaction with the other citizens of Springfield are just as great and it never feels like a split-personality.

Guilluame crafted such a masterful character on SOAP that they spun his witty butler into a show of his own as a bulter to a bungling idiot of a Gov. Long before Spin City, this was the political sitcom to measure upto and thanks to the charm and snark of Guillaume's Benson, it delivered the goods.

Shane and Spock both deserve listing over their respective protagonists. Not that the leads were bad picks, but they both elevated the shows above their premise and defined their leads through ridiculously great performances.

Smarmy, smug, obnoxious womanizer. David E. Kelly's most well-rounded character. He's a champion of the little guy, but uncomfortable with the dark places he'll sometimes go to win a case. He knows he sometimes does bad things(Like destroying his close friend Jerry to win a case by making fun of his Aspergers), and he tries to balance that by fighting for good causes. Devestatingly funny and bombastic, his personal life is a mess as he goes through a string of women, some important, some just flings, but what grounds him is his moral outrage and his heterosexual love for the much older Denny Crane, the only person that seems to understand him.

Cheryl West - Robyn Malcolm - Outrageous Fortune

An obscure addition for those who live outside of New Zealand and Australia, but a valid one all the same. Cheryl West is the tough-as-nails mother figure of Auckland's notorious West family - a crooked family with generations worth of illegal pedigree. When family matriach, Wolfgang, is shipped off to prison again, Cheryl decides that enough is enough and it's time for someone to right the ship. Putting her foot down, she informs her family (twin brothers Van & Jed, airheaded slut, Pascalle, scheming-but-enterprising teen, Loretta and Wolf's batshit insane father, Ted) that the West's are "going straight" at all costs and hanging up the gloves and balaclava's.

It's a tour-de-force performance from Robyn Malcolm as the sole voice of reason being drowned out by her kids, her father-in-law, and her own husband continuing to pull all the strings from within the confines of jail - with her being the only person determined to keep her entire family out of jail, and the rest of the family equally determined to ignore her, this show has been one of the most consistently powerful, intense, heartbreaking, and hilariously funny shows to come down the pike in years. And in a sea of absolutely fantastic, show-stealing characters, Cheryl West uses her iron-clad resolve and take-no-bullshit-from-anyone demeanor to reign over them all as the queen of NZ TV.

Arnold Judas Rimmer - Chris Barrie - Red Dwarf

Objecting to his own defence at a murder trial, blaming his parents for everything that went wrong in his life, his own mind rebelling against perfect happiness, the list of great Rimmer moments is endless.

Rimmer was at the same time the most repulsive yet likeable character in the show, and was a surprisingly complex character. In fact I would go so far as to say their are very few Drama's let alone comedies that have such interesting and well developed characters’ as Rimmer.

Gazpacho Soup is one of the best scenes in any TV show.

The Browncoats give this show a bad name around here, but there's no denying the complex character Whedon and Fillion created in Capt. Reynolds. There are the obvious Solo comparisions, but where Ford and Lucas crafted an undeniably iconic surface-level rogue, Whedon and Fillion go for deeper waters. A man learning to (oft-reluctantly) pick up the pieces of a broken life on the losing side of a war that took his faith, Reynolds is a multi-faceted man - equal parts self-deprecation, stubborn pride, earthy good humor, cold pragmatism, steely honor, devout loyalty, utter cowardice, and barely-covered self-loathing.

Most impressively, all these sides come across over a relatively scant series run. Whether he's yelling at his crew, negotiating with hardened criminals, sitting naked on a rock, marrying unknowingly, harboring fugitives, or just cracking wise, Reynolds seems less like a second-hand archetype, and more like a flawed human being, with all the wonderful unpredictability that comes with it.

I'm quite surprised no one has put this guy up here yet. But for any one who is a crime fiction fan. Cracker is a must, especially the first series. Probably the best interrogator this side of Frank Pembleton. A giant of a man whose excess is on par with his sheer brilliance. All the while dealing with his family and long suffering wife. Fantastic stuff.
