If there HAS to be an Indy IV... - Page 2

So, I haven't watched The Last Crusade in over a decade, but doesn't he already have eternal life? Or was there some lesson about what eternal life really means that I missed as a kid?
Eternal life lasted so long as you didn't cross The Great Seal, which is exactly what happened as soon as Indy left the Grail Temple.
Ah. I thought crossing the great seal with the cup just made God angry.

Still, Fountain of Youth seems to tread familiar ground. I mean, all he has to do is keep going back to the grail. Yeah it's buried, but he is an archaeologist; he knows how to dig.
Which I always thought was a bizarre condition for God to put on the Grail... although I guess there's precedent for that (see also "The Bible").

How about they take a few pages from Edgar Rice Borroughs and Jules Verne and send Indy, maybe his kids or protege as well, to a civilization at the center of the earth, or pursue the Hollow Earth theory? He'll find a race of super human beings ready to invade, and only indy can stop them?
At the Earth's Core, Journey to the Center of the Earth... nice.

Or a plateau of Doyle's dinosaurs.

Just don't send him to Mars like Tarzan or J. Carter.
I am just not sure who I would have as the new Indy. First name that popped in my head is Thomas Gibson, but then I think he is too clean. The next name is Eric Dane, but not really sure on that one.
It has to be Dennis Quaid, he's got the same rough-and-tumble look and could pass as an archaeologist. As well as Harrison could, anyway.
I am just trying to think of an actor who has that rough and tumble look from the younger generation, and none really comes to mind.

Quade seems to old to me if you are going for a decent reboot.

In my mind, it is ideally someone who is heir to that Steve McQueen or Clint Eastwood legacy (two seperate legacies/legends there; but the ideal actor for me would come from one of those lines).

Matthew Fox from LOST? Sorry, fanboy stunt-casting muscles flexing...

Ben Browder from Farscape? (he's my answer for Capt. America & Green Lantern as well)

Nobody mentioned Nathan Fillion or The Chin yet.
Fox annoys me. Maybe that is cause he plays whiny characters on both shows I have seen him in.

The Chin for me goes with Quaid. Too old and too late for them.

Fillion, maybe. He would need to get a little tougher looking for me.

I do like the idea of Browder tho for Cap, and especially for the Hal Jordan GL.
Hugh Jackman, Thomas Jane, Kiefer Sutherland.
This is why we keep Moltisanti around. That and his love of Stingray.

Jackman, maybe I could see that one. He could certainly do the range.

Jane even more so.

Sorry, Sutherland I just wouldn't buy as Indy. Not sure why. Maybe because he will always be Kiefer Sutherland to me.
I like the Hugh and Jane noms.

It's tough for me to think of that fedora on anyone but Ford.

It doesn't seem as inter-changable as Bond's tux or Batman's mask IMO.
That's probably because only 1 guy has played an adult Indy, but I'm of the mind that if you get the right actor and supply him with the right story and the usual inventive stunts then it could be pulled off.

Too bad River Phoenix is dead, or not depending on what you thought of THE LAST CRUSADE'S opening.
See, I think Indy is like that for most people (only Ford can be him) because the sequels have been so spread out and there has never been any real talk about replacing him. But, he should be the American Bond.

Aaron Eckhart is who I keep seeing in my head as the new Indy.

As far as directing and writing goes, I am not sure. You really need people who love this genre. Darabont would of course be my first choice since he seems to genuinely love the genre and this character. But, I am also trying to think outside of the box for this one.
If there ever were an Indy re-casting (which there won't be), it must be someone that both men and women both like, someone younger and more attractive/charismatic. In my experience, women generally aren't too thrilled with Guy Cheekhollow Pierce, or Dennis SmarmyMcJoker Quaid.

As much as I hate to hate on harmless threads, this one has caused serious damage to my geek soul.

Indiana Jones and Quest for the Original Star Wars Trilogy.

I'd kill to see a showdown between Han and Indy and see who shoots first.
Brendan Fraser has already pulled this duty on the Mummy movies, but I could see him having the right lighthearted approach. I do think that backtracking and showing a younger Indy would be the way to go, as Raiders picked up on him already having some mileage behind him. It seems like there's plenty of backstory to fill in there.

I like the Darabont suggestion. Obvious, but good. Kerry Conran, perhaps? He certainly knows the movie serial territory.

Yeah, we'll find out that Indy and Belloq went to grade school together where Sallah's father was the school janitor and Marcus taught third grade.
Funnily enough, you're not far wrong. Back in the day, there was a series of novels written about the exploits of a young Indy that tied into the tv show. One of them featured Indy-- the younger, non-Powder Indy-- traveling to Cairo where he met a young Sallah, who was a pickpocket. I remember being completely fascinated by this. Then again, I was, like, 13.

Was Sallah still singing Gilbert and Sullivan back then?
Was there ever a backstory about Indy molesting Marion? Remember, she was a child! She was in love!

Cue perv Indy, leering, "You knew what you were doin'..."

There have been some good ideas mentioned above. Richards' Fountain of Youth is a good idea, but Dracula? Never happen. Keep in mind he's an archeologist and whatever he goes after needs to have some sort of historical significance. He won't turn into Van Helsing.

I've always wanted to note, and to see if anyone else caught it (I'm sure most of you did), but there was a blatant continuity problem with Last Crusade. Supposedly it took place before the events in Raiders, but when he and Dr. Schneider were walking through the catacombs under the church, he comes across an inscription of the lost ark. Dr. Schnieder asks what it is and he says it's the Lost Ark, and she asks if he's sure. He says, with a wink "Pretty sure." Obviously referencing the events in Raiders. This has probably been brought up in some other thread, but wanted to mention it anyway.
Huh? Raiders takes place in 1936. Crusade starts off with a flashback to Indy's youth in 1912, but then fast forwards to 1938. Temple of Doom is the one that takes place before Raiders, in 1935.

Ummm, what are you talking about? There is a very definite historical basis for the legend of Dracula. As mentioned above, his name was Vlad Tepes and he was a Wallachian warlord responsible for battling back the hordes attempting to invade Christendom in medieval times. To imbue that legend with some magic, a la Bram Stoker's Dracula, is no great stretch. To a certain extent, that's exactly what Lucas and Spielberg did with the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant and the Shankara Stones: quasi-historical artifacts with supernatural characteristics. Moreover, the location of the tomb of "Dracula" has long been a serious debate among archeologists.

That being said, I seriously doubt that we will ever see something like "Indiana Jones and the Order of Dracul". It's all just fun speculation until the celluloid is shipped to the theaters.

TEMPLE OF DOOM takes place in 1935.
RAIDERS takes place in 1936.
LAST CRUSADE takes place in 1938, aside from the Young Indy sequence, which takes place in 1912.

I always thought that Young Sherlock Holmes felt like an Indy prequel... with a much more uptight protagonist of course.

Being exec produced by Spielberg, maybe it was just the vibe.
The original script title was: Young Sherlock Holmes and the Pyramid of Fear
Very Indy-like...

It also shares with Raiders: Production Designer/Set Decorator

I think that no matter how the Dracula angle is handled, it'd seem a bit stale (Indy vs. The Vampire, blaaaaaaaah). The ark was cool because even though we'd all heard of it, there hadn't yet been a serious movie made about it. Atlantis on the other hand... Done correctly, that could be golden. Also, I think that a huge consideration will be the location, seeing as Indy's a globetrotter and already done South America, Egypt, Germany, and The Orient. So they'll probly just find some excuse to send him off to Africa or Spain or something (even though, a story centering around the US itself would be an interesting change of pace).

All I really know is that every second that passes makes an Indy IV more and more unlikely, and I cherish those seconds for that reason.

Let. It. Die.
