The Shield - Season 6

Sure it may feel like forever and a day before the new season starts, but we can always sit back and kill the time on here.

Season 6 Promo
I didn't notice the first time I saw this, but it seems like Mackey & Cletus Van Damme both fall into the grave at the end....
gotta say, I prefer some of the older style teasers with their sweaty paranoid claustrophobic Chiklis close-ups. still totally buzzed for the new season though.
I haven't been this excited for a season of television ln a long time. Last year's season finale hit the perfect note of cliffhanger/fucking bang to end the season.

Possible spoiler up next!

I read in Ask Ausiello on TVGuide.com that Whitaker's going to be gone after two or three episodes, apparently he and Chiklis don't get along. Much as I loved what he did last year I like that the season (at least based on that information) is going to be focused more on the Strike Team dealing with what took place rather than dealing with outside forces.
shawn ryan mentioned that the next season is written as such that it would ask whitaker to come back for a couple episodes, but he wouldn't have as big a role as he did in S5.

That is quite an intriguing comment about whitaker and chiklis not getting along though. For some reason, I am reminded of other feuds whitaker has had with other actors along the course of his career...but I cant come up with any legitimate examples. I think whitaker has a reputation of being difficult to work with though...am I wrong?

I really like that song in the promo. I'm having a bitch of time trying to find it though.

They haven't officially released it yet.

According to the youtube comments it's "The Night" by Black Lab.

Holy Shit, a youtube comment that was helpful. That's gotta be a first.

I've been looking forward to this season moreso than any of the previous seasons. The only other show that has me gripped this much is Lost. The season 5 cliffhanger is without a doubt one of the best endings I've ever seen.

I am now wondering what's in store for Kavanaugh now that Forest Whitaker's only got a few episodes. I definitely thought he would buy it by the last episode of season 5, but now he's back, with a few episodes. Perhaps to finish up his arc? I'm also wondering if Anthony Anderson is going to come back as well. He's got so much dirt on the strike team, and that makes him really dangerous. Bring on season 6!
I imagine Anderson would have to be involved somewhere down the line. There's obviously a ton I'm interested in with regards to the Vic/Kavanaugh/Shane storylines, but I'm also on the edge of my seat to see if Dutch has mastered pimpology.

Early word is that he's one of the best characters to wield a cane since Dr. House.
Good artwork for the season 5 DVD set:

I think the talk of Whitaker not getting along with the cast and crew might be true. Almost every episode from the season has a commentary with multiple people but none feature Whitaker, not even the "Kavanaugh" episode.

It arrives on March 27th which pretty much confirms my thought that season 6 will start on April 3rd, since F/X shows usually show up on DVD the week before a new season begins.
He might have been busy filming Last King of Scotland. Also, David Rees Snell isn't on any commentary track for season one (which makes him the only cast member to not be on at least one track), but I don't think that's because they think the guy's a douche.

Although speaking of Ronnie, you gotta feel bad for the guy. He's such a Zeppo.
I don't know the exact timeline but I think SCOTLAND was filmed before the last season of "The Shield." He's pretty heavy in SCOTLAND while he shed a lot of weight over the course of "The Shield's" season. He may have been busy filming some other movie but even Anthony Anderson is listed on one of the commentary tracks, not to mention the guy who plays Billings.

Snell is definitely the Zeppo of the bunch. Though I believe he was finally listed in the opening credits with the rest of the cast last season. He's also listed on a few commentary tracks for the DVD set.
They must really hate that guy. Five years on the show and he's had zero character development.
If you want a laugh go and read through some of The Shield thread over at TWOP. It's full of Ronnie fanatics who are endlessly speculating on how his character will finally come to forefront of the story and play a pivotal role in the show. They were convinced that he was going to turn out to be the father of Danny's baby. It's pathetic.

I don't think he ever got over losing the stach.

As for Whitaker, my take on it is that even if the guy is a complete and utter dick, when he turns in performances like that, you give him whatever the hell wants.

Just to play devil's advocate though, what if the reason for his lack of presence on the commentary tracks is that after all the talk he got after Last King of Scotland has led to him getting many more offers that he just straight up doesn't have time for commentary tracks. I was under the impression as well that his storyline was always meant to come to an end after season 5. What else is there for him to do now that Lem is gone (and to that extension, his case)?

That does sound pretty sad. I do think that with Lem gone, Ronnie will eventually become more of a force on the show. He always seems pretty level-headed and I gotta believe he has a better understanding of what happened to Lem than Vic will allow himself to have.

Nah, the guy's just filler. An extra body. The Strike Team is going to have a new member that Claudette brings in, either to dig up dirt on the team or as a possible replacement for Vic. I've read different speculation so who knows. But I wouldn't bet on any more screentime or development for Ronnie. The guy's not even that good an actor.

I'm thinking they are going to go with the "it's better to not open your mouth and have everyone think you are an idiot than to open your mouth and prove them right" route with Ronnie. He will always and forever be "the other strike team member".

Actually, Ronnie will probably remain background and whoever is replacing Lem will get the screentime.
Kevin Hiatt is the man that is replacing Lem.

I think Ronnie is the guy that has shit on everybody, he knows how to work all that surviellance equipment. When all is said and done I think he'd break and save his ass.

BTW, did they ever follow up on what happened to Tavon? I don't expect him to return to the Strike Team, but perhaps he could still come into play later on.

(Side note: when looking up on how to spell Tavon's name, I realized that Brian White was also the loud mouth football player in Brick.)
There's actually some stuff from past seasons that was brought up, that I felt should have been answered, like that woman who came to interview everyone, and she would always be going to the bathroom, and coming out spraying her mouth with something, my guess was mouth freshener. What was the point in showing that? Also when and how did the Dutchman lose that girlfriend that he had way back when?
They didn't really make a big deal out of Dutch losing his girlfriend. Sorta like when they introduced that chick from the Barrio as Lem's love interest in one episode and then never mentioned her again.

Some of you guys are underestimating Ronnie. He's been front and center during the money train heist along with countless acts to help save Vic, Shane, and Lem's ass. I don't think he'd be involved in all that if he wasn't going to become a bigger player than he's previously been.

They did, Shane referenced it in the classic line "Meanwhile, Lem over here is banging Chiquita Banana"
Oops, I don't think they ever showed her again though. It always seemed kind of odd that they devoted a whole episode to Lem and that girl and then that was it for her.

Of course then there's Julian and his wife, that's a whole other bag of worms.

I get the impression that there's this big sock drawer where they keep old storylines that they can bring up whenever they need some stuff, kind of like season 3 and Margos Dezirian.

As for Lem and and Chiquita Banana, I always took that episode as a way of introducing Lem as the conscience of the group (if I'm not mistaken, that was the first episode where Lem got any real screen time).
That's true. It was meant to make Lem more than just "the one with blond hair." It is a shame that they haven't given Ronnie an episode to break out from being "the one with facial hair."

I've been listening to the commentaries and while that episode definitely fleshed out Lem, the whole conscience-of-the-group thing didn't really start to emerge (consciously, at least) till season three.

As for Ronnie, the guy will always be the Zeppo. I think it's almost too late to flesh out his character now.

I assumed that the amount of physical rehab required made it impossible for him to work the streets so he just moved on to something else (kind of sad when you consider that he joined the Strike Team for the excitement).

You can also throw in guilt after what he thinks he did to Mara. Anyways, IMDB has him being in 7 movies in 2007, so I guess I'll have to wait even longer for his return.

One of those movies is DUNGEON SIEGE!

For the last year or so I've thought of Ronnie as "the one who also stars as Charlie on 'It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia.'"

Ronnie has to come in somewhere, doesn't he? He's been in the shit from the beginning and never really said anything about it, I hope he's got something up his sleeve.

Also, no one takes a stove to the face like Ronnie.

I just got a friend of mine hooked on the show, and he's using Netflix to try and catch up before the new season starts. Anyone know if the previous season will be out before the new one starts?

Thank you for the heads up. I was considering buying a season or 2 at Chrismas but waited. Glad I did. CC was out but got the Best Buy. a little over $80 bucks vs $200+ is a steal for one of the few shows to get monumentally better every season.

Any good commentaries to check first? Best extra feature?

IGN has an interview with Walton Goggins. It's pretty short and doesn't spill too much about S6 but any little bit is enough to get me excited. Can't wait for it to start.

God I miss this show. I need it now, dammit!
Thanks for linking that interview. It seems like the only people you usually hear much from on that show are Chiklis and Shawn Ryan.

I especially liked what Goggins had to say here:

Quote:
IGN TV: We saw in a flashback episode that Vic took Shane down this road. However, for whatever reasons, a lot of viewers seem to be able to still support and defend Vic.

Goggins: It's a double standard! You have to have a hero, and Shane is to the left of Vic. Shane does things that Vic wouldn't do, if Vic would not do anything. And so you have to have that dynamic. And Lem is to the right of Vic. He is the moral conscience of this Strike Team; of this fictitious loyalty that we have, that we ascribe to and where we try to get every single week. But it's fascinating, because people say that, and I look at them and I say, "Vic is an awful person!" Vic's an awful guy. And what has Shane done that he hasn't done? But Shane has killed one of the most lovable characters on the show. And for that, it remains to be seen if people can forgive him. I don't think he's looking for redemption. I think he's looking for clarity. And I think that if getting some perspective on one's self leads to a redemption in some people's eyes, well then, that's a good thing.

Great news we're getting a 15 min short before the season. Rescue Me did the same thing last year too. Hopefully it's something FX will continue to do in the future.

Forgot about the Rescue Me short - and it was absolutely hilarious. At first I thought the idea about a short was kinda dumb, but now I'm open to it. Thanks hellpaso...
