NY Comicon: Anyone Else Going in Feb?

I am planning on going to this Con in Feb., just for the Saturday, w/ 3 of my geek buddies. We went last year, and at first hated the experience because it was just so crowded that you couldn't even stop to look at anything. They have supposedly remedied that situation, limiting ticket sales & renting out more space, so I'm looking forward to it this year.

The thing I am looking forward to the most is continuing to complete my collection of "Creepy" magazine, the old B&W Warren property. I found a guy selling them cheap last year, and I hope he's back.
Every year, I spend the least, it seems, but come home w/ the largest pile of stuff. Looking forward to making my back hurt again this year!

I normally couldn't care less about the apeakers or guests, but this year they got Stepehn King coming as the guest of honor to shill his "Dark Tower" comics. Probably not the topic I'd have preferred to hear him speak about, but psyched to see him anyway, as he is one of my all time favorite authors.

Anyone else going to this? What'll be the highlight for you?

I went last year to grab a couple of interviews for Creature Corner, and yeah, the place was a packed mess. I really hope they fixed it for this year.

I'm probably going to attend but there's not going to be much I can cover for the site besides King. Still, I managed to find a lot of cool indie horror novels, and I do like my comic books anyway, so I should be able to find some cool stuff.

Just curious: you only read horror comics? It's almost all I read these days, although I always had a soft spot for superheroes (having grown up on them), and I'll buy a good one if I can find one.

Perhaps I'll see you there.

Na, not at all. I'm not a big fan of superhero stuff (although I do love some of the Ultimate series) but I only collect trades. I only got back into it a few years ago and am still pretty new to everything though, and have recently been making my way through 100 Bullets and Sandman.

I do love my horror comics though. The I Am Legend adaptation is a fave, as is Hack/Slash and Joe Lansdale's At The Drive-In. I just mention the horror stuff because that's the way I get press passes...heh.

I'm considering it, but I need one more push.

If you go with the right people, it can be a really terrific time. We went to the convention l;ast year, then went out to a bar and for some steaks afterward. The only vice we planned on but ultimately didn't indulge in was cigars. Damn shame, too. I had 3 CAO Black Toros burning a hole in my breast pocket. But it was a Day with a capital "D" all the same, DESPITE the convention being so crowded it kind of sucked. If they improve that situation, as they promise they have taken steps to do, it can't help but be even better. I personally am rubbing my hands in anticipation, and dreaming of the "Creepy" back issues I can score. There's one in particular that I have only the vaguest recollections of from my early youth in the 70's that I will hunt relentlessly. It helps to have a purpose to going, I guess.

Besides, Al and I are going; what more incentive do you NEED?

Thought I'd revive this thread, as we near the date for this Con. Nothing new that excites me personally since the last posts went up. Anyone else going to this? They keep sending me news updates w/ expanded guest & speaker lists via e-mail. Have any of the recent announcements lit anyone's fire? What's the Holy Grail of missing issues you'll be seeking out this year to fill out your collection?

Well, Wes Craven's going to be there. Hopefully I can ask him what the hell happened with Cursed.

There's not really many comics I'm looking for but I'm sure I'll pick something up.

I should be there on Saturday, Iggy. Maybe we can meet up. I'll be the guy going around flashing my press pass like Wayne and Garth with the backstage passes.

I'll be the guy with the huge, royal blue LL Bean backpack. I hadn't heard Craven was gonna be there. Don't know why they didn't hype that little tidbit more. I've never listened to a speaker at one of these things before, but now I'd like to hear him and King. Should be interesting. Hopefully see you there.

Not that I want to beat a dead horse some more, but I'm actually surprised there isn't more of a buzz in these parts about this Con. I know our members are from the 4 corners of the globe, but a goodly number of them seem to be from the NY metro area (and at last year's Con, a bunch of folks bused it in from other parts of the country). Just wondering why there isn't more excitement about it.

Need some help - looking for a moderate celeb, preferably a comedian/comedic actor/funnyperson to host a field piece about the NY comic con. Besides Brian Posehn or Patton Oswalt, anyone know of any such people who are big comic fans?

You're doing breakfast on Saturday, Alex?

Looking into it. I might show up Sunday too just to hit up that Tripper panel.

I'm really, really hoping their promise of more room is true.

just curious, is this "tripper" the same film that was added in select cities to the After Dark Filma Horrorfest in November?

And I hope they've got more room, too. . . .

Yep, it's that film. Our Brian saw it at Screamfest last year- he really dug it (here).

This is an actual audience comment for Wes Craven at a Hills Have Eyes Q&A:
Q-There's a scene a lot of people refer to in A Nightmare on Elm Street where Nancy, Heather Langenkamp's character, goes to the closet and takes off her shirt, and you see her bare back for a moment, and I always refer to this scene as 'the awakening of my sexual being.' It's the first time I remember being aroused. I don't really have a question, I actually just wanted to tell you that.

Did anyone spot Fabfunk at this thing?

for the story behind the question:

Was the most entertaining question of the panel.

hahahaha!

Where did you read that? I should put the audio file up somewhere, it's amazing. You can hardly hear it through my giggling, though.

There's a transcript of the Q&A at Cinematical. Just saw yours on the Corner (yours has a lot more about creepy guy, which is good). Looks like that particular question is making the internet rounds.
Trust me, it wasn't a creepy moment- it brought the whole place down. Written out straight though, yeah, it seems like a creepy ass thing to say.

Looking through those other questions reminds me of why I didn't bother transcribing the whole panel. Red Eye 2 sequel? Fuck you.

Oh by the way, that guy at Cinematical said this- "After basically ripping his way out of mom's vagina, the mutant baby promptly stands up and punches mom in the face. No, I'm not kidding." That's not true at all. I don't know how he made that mistake. It was the guy delivering the baby.... what he saw doesn't make sense at all.
Shit! Well, thanks for saving me the disappointment in the theater. That bit had me excited.
Hey Bob, I was just being open with him, not trying to creep him out, though I probably failed. The dude that was hoping for Red Eye 2... now that is truly sick, depraved and creepy. It was nice that I got to add some laughter to the panel and that afterwards people on-line are getting a kick out of it.

I had a good time. Except for the inevitable backache I get carrying all my ill gotten booty around. It was even worse than usual this year, because I knew exactly what I wanted to get, and found it cheap (a guy was selling my beloved Creepy back issues for as low as $3.00; it don't get any better than that) early on, so I spent all the funds I had allocated & walked around with my full freight the rest of the day.

I could have done without the hour long wait to get in (although once you did get in, it wasn't packed or anything), and the fact that there seem to be fewer and fewer actual comic book vendors there and more cross marketing stuff every year. Not that I mind them being there, mind youl. But since I always go w/ the express purpose of buying books, te more the merrier, and the greater the chances I'll plug the considerable holes in my Creepy collection. But I still I had a blast.

A cigar afterward (a Nat Sherman Gotham, appropriately enough) and a few drinks followed by dinner at the Palm Too Steakhouse rounded out the day nicely. Never did get to meet up w/ Al; guess there's always next year.

We grumbled as we waited on line: "Never again. They're not getting my money next year." But they did seem to have worked out most of the kinks from last year's con, and I think we all changed our minds once we got inside. I know I'm gonna go next year. If that dude w/ the Creepys is back, it'll be worth it for that alone.

Oh, and the hot redhead dressed like ark Phoenix didn't hurt matters any, either.
yeah, she was alllllright. I think she had a train of people following her the entire time.

Well, i had a great time as well. Plenty of swag, cool artists and thousands of giddy nerds. What's not to like First time I've seen gary coleman in real life as well. Truly a defining moment for me.
