Star Trek: The Animated Series

Can't believe no one has mentioned this yet. Got this for christmas and boy what a blast!

The discs look fantastic. The animation is primitive, but who cares? The artistry behind the background work and the character's resemblance to their live-action counterparts is amazing. Even better than that, the writing. Most of the writers were from the original series, DJ Fontana, Sam Peeples; Walter Koenig was thrown a bone for not being hired back as a cast member and wrote The Infinite Vulcan. Something about giant clones, a 50 foot Spock is a hoot to see.

Some great episodes in here, love Yesteryear the best, so far. There are tons of firsts in here. It's the first time Kirk's middle name is mentioned, the first appearance of the holodeck and the first Captain of the Enterprise, Robert April.

James Doohan was the fucking man. Voiced over 53 characters throughout the series. The best part, NO Chekov!

Can't believe this show lasted only two seasons, 22 episodes. Damn shame.

I had almost forgotten how much I love Filmation and their unique touch. My favorite animated block of television ever was Tarzan and the Super 7.

Now where the hell is their version of Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle?

I saw this set at a Friend's house. It's the best I've seen Filmation stuff look outside of the line that BCI is currently putting out.

Filmation's Tarzan is coming out 2nd Quarter 2007.

I just saw the Tarzan news. Yay. Lone Ranger/Zorro is coming as well.

Probably because most didn't get it for Chritsmas and it is, like all the Trek stuff, way overpriced.

I want it though, when it gets cheaper...

Not that I feel strongly about this one way or the other but...why is that a good thing? Just curious.

I got the animated series disc when it came out -- very glad to have it. It got me semi-excited about the new animated TREK series currently in the works.

Well, there goes the money I was going to spend on Johnny Quest. I still don't have Filmation's Flash Gordon set either.

Johnny Quest is much better than Lone Ranger/Zorro, even though I enjoyed those as well. I have only vague memories of the Flash Gordon show but I think it was decent.

In general I despise Filmation though. So, so cheap. But I have to hand it to BCI - they're turning out some killer DVD sets.

Whoah, had no idea about that. I never followed the Clone Wars cartoons, but this mini ep idea could be fun.

I seem to recall Filmmation doing a decent Batman cartoon as well.

Decent is a strong word. They're certainly very funny in a highly unintentional manner.

I'd love to have this and TOS. But they are soooo expensive.
TOS sets just got dropped down to about half, probably in anticipation of the remastered HD versions coming down the pike. I was skeptical about them, but the guys tweaking the eps are doing a really careful job. Check out some of the before and afters here.

Just me and my strangeness at work, I've always hated Chekov. He was useless on the old show and you never once miss him here. To be fair, he had some great moments in the movies, espeically in Trek II when Khan put the eels in his ear. Koenig's bitterness has always bugged me as well.

TARGET has the animated set for $34.00, that's reasonable. The original series is now about $50 a season set so that's not bad considering. Plus, Ebay always has this stuff way cheaper.

This is some impressive shit.

I wasn't sure what to think of the idea at first. But having watched about six episodes now (after not seeing the show at all for about ten years), I'm really liking it. I was afraid the new effects would be distracting. Instead, I find that I'm not distracted by some of the cheaper old effects anymore. They're doing an excellent job of not reinventing the wheel, sticking as closely as possible to original designs, and just souping things up a bit. The orbital planet shots are a particular improvement. Sometimes, I actually find myself wishing they'd do a little more; a shot of the Romulan Bird of Prey self-destructing in Balance of Terror might have been nice. But all in all, I'm pretty impressed, and I think this is the set I might be buying on DVD.

They had Bat-Mite, so that's really all that has to be said about that.

Same here. I read an interview where the guys behind it mention one of the rules they set for themselves was they wouldn't alter the soundtrack, so changing the running time by adding shots and such would be out. They would only replace shots, not add any new cuts. They get a little liberal with some of the exterior space shots (like when the Khan takes over the ship and cuts the Botany Bay loose), but respectful is the order of the day. Watching the original stuff on TV Land, I'm surprised at how distracting the OLD effects look now.

You'll be running for the rewind button when the Gorn blinks, though...

Well, based on the shitty way Shatner treated him, I can't really blame him. And he did end up doing some writing on The Animated Series, so his presence is still there. I guess.

I guess, but the people who do the bitching always end up looking worse than the person they bitch about. Nobody wants to hear that crybaby bullshit. The other three, Doohan, Takei and Nichols, seemed to get over it, he needs to as well.

I was leary too, it's hard not to like though. Plus, if it ropes in new fans, all the better. The best part is, the show still works as good as it ever did.

Koenig is now reduced to appearing in fan films, if that makes you feel better.

And new fans indeed - my wife started watching the remastered stuff and is hooked.

Not a big fan of Star Trek. I've seen all the movies once and I may have seen all of the original series. Maybe. Watched Next Generation because of the dearth of sci-fi on TV at the time. Caught a few episodes of the subsequent serieseses.

As a lark, I bumped the first Animated disk to the top of my Netflix. Goddamn these shows are fun! The rest of the episodes should be at my house tomorrow.

What bugs me is that I saw that episode, and I managed to totally miss the blink. Maybe I blinked at the exact same moment.

Incidentally, I'm shocked at the lack of righteous indignation I'm seeing over this. Am I just not looking on the right sites? Is there some Trekkie blog where everybody is treating this like a Joe Ezterhaus rewrite of the Old Testament? It just seems like after all the stink about the Star Wars Special Editions, people would be a little more upset over this.

Why? They're actually doing it right this time (for the most part). Most SW purists I know (including myself) were not opposed to the notion of Lucas going in and enhancing the visual effects. It was what he actually did with them that pissed so many people off.
Agreed, it's as if these guys watched what Lucas did and learned what NOT to do. He is Goofus to their Gallant. (And to cut Lucas a tiny bit of slack, some of what he did was fine. The few glaring examples of wrongness overshadowed them, though.)

I'm sure you'll find some toad somewhere who's good and pissed, but these new effects are reverent compared to Lucas' added bells and whistles.
It's amazing how something as simple as adding the nacelles to the rear viewscreen view works so well. It's something I never thought about until I saw the before and after pic, and it just makes so much sense.

That's all true. But Trekkies aren't exactly known for their level-headed realism.
In this age of Lucas apologists, Lucas raped my Childhoodists, and Browncoats, Trekkies seem mellow in comparison. I think their ranks have thinned (in number, not waistlines) in recent years.

As a former fan myself, I can attest that Voyager and Enterprise did an effective job of putting out the fire.
Pretty much. These remasters got me watching again after a ten year break.
