The Police Reuniting?

Never thought I would see the.....oh wait. They're like the last band who hasn't already reunited. It was bound to happen.

The British press is a-twitter with rumors of a Police reunion in the wake of word that rehearsal dates have been penciled in for the trio, presumably in February prior to bassist/vocalist Sting’s upcoming European tour and after drummer Stewart Copeland completes his duties as a judge on the BBC-TV “singing with the stars”-style celebrity duets program “Just the Two Of Us.” Guitarist Andy Summers recently published his memoir of his time with the Police, “One Train Later,” but doesn’t appear to have any outstanding commitments currently.

The proverbial “informed sources” have suggested that a tour will be announced some time in January – presumably it would start in May or June, which is when the Police’s label, A&M, is reportedly planning to release a special 30th anniversary anthology.

The Police formed in 1977, and a spokesperson for A&M confirmed that the erstwhile band members had indeed been in discussions. A&M issued a statement late last month saying, “Next year is the 30th anniversary of the release of ‘Roxanne,’ the first Police single. It is our intention to mark the anniversary by doing something special with the band's catalogue of songs. Needless to say, everyone is hopeful the band will support our plans and while early discussions have taken place, nothing has been decided.”

Time, they say, heals all wounds, although towards the end of their career the Police had attained near-legendary heights of personal acrimony before going their separate ways. (Ironically, a formal break-up was never announced.) But money, they say, heals even more wounds, as does the roar of an arena full of adoring fans, so a reunion doesn’t seem all that far fetched. Just the same, given the outsized nature of the members’ egos, perhaps the tour’s theme song, as it relates to Sting, Copeland and Summers’ positions upon the concert
stage, should be – drumroll, please – “Don't Stand So Close To Me.”

They had a brief, drunken "reunion" at the reception for Sting's wedding, though apparently they played one song, sounded like crap (cause they were drunk and out of practice) and started fighting. I would LOVE if they reunited for real though, I'd pay quite a bit for that concert.
Whatever convinces Sting to trash that fuckin' lute is fine by me.
I hope this is true, and I hope it comes close enough to where I live that I could go.
Christ, how many "anthologies" of Police stuff has A&M released already? And they need another one?
I feel there will be a lot of bummed out POLICE fans if this happens. Most fans, myself included, would want to hear the tunes in a tight, old-school Police style, not in reinterpreted versions, ala the R-N-R HOF performance. No thanks.

I'll find something else to do with my $200.

Let me add, I'm a little surprised a reunion took this long.

I'm kinda torn on this too. I remember when the rest of the Police joined Sting on the Amnesty International tour back in the 90s and they sounded pretty tight, but I fear Sting is going to try to turn every old uptempo song into some Medieval dirge or something.

Still, if the prices aren't insane, I'm there.
Sting's Medieval Lute music is better than his Adult Contemporary soft rock, Brand New Day and all that...
At least it's unique or vaguely interesting, rather than sounding like Michael W Smith...
I think Sting probably read the editorial in the Onion they wrote as him titled 'I Used To Be Kind of Cool Once' and it hit a little too close to home for him. That's the REAL reason the Police are reuniting.

Oh, and money. That's another factor.

I do have to admit, I love "Dont' Stand So Close to Me '86." I don't know why, I guess because it sounds like the original done by the Synchronicity era band.

I have to say I prefer the original. I'm not sure whether I'd go see the Police in concert at this point. Maybe if they were getting rave reviews.

Did anyone go see them back in the day?
The original 'Don't Stand So Close To Me' is fucking heaven. The '86 version enraged me to the point of tears when it replaced the original on the greatest hits disc I have. 'So Lonely' was another glaring omission on the one I have too. Cock-gobblers!

Tell me about it. Do any of the collections have the original recording?

I could be wrong, but I think the one I see at Future Shop all the damn time does. I think it's just called 'The Police: Greatest Hits'. The one I have is 'Every Breath You Take: The Singles' or something like that. I need to upgrade. I'll move onto the albums when I have more money.

Fuck anybody that bashes people for only buying greatest hits albums. I'm not made of money and there's so much stuff I need to get into it's a good place to start.

EDIT: God damn it. This is Smeagol. I'm at Rum's house and he has his account on remember me.

Trust me, the ticket prices are insane! I'm going anyway. Woo-Hoo!

We'll be seeing them July 6th at Wrigley Field. After missing them the 6 times they hit Chi-Town back in the day..I'd pay any price.
I think the only Police compilation worth getting, assuming you're a fan, is the boxed set. And it'll probably be a fraction of the ticket prices.
The lowest price I've seen is $55, which I'd pay in a heartbeat, regardless of where I was in the building.
I hope they're coming to Cleveland.
I might go if they record a new album, but I'm not a big fan of greatest hits tours.
Got my tickets earlier today.
Just got two lower level tickets for the July 11th show in Tampa and I'm more excited than I probably have any right to be.
Any chance they'll add more dates? I know that I'll never make it unless they play Atlanta.
That is odd that they're not hitting Atlanta. With them in Florida on the 10th and 11th, makes me wonder if there's something book in Atlanta that same time they couldn't work around.
Apparently, there will be another leg of North American tourdates after the european leg. i'd assume/hope they're saving atl for that leg, kinda like U2 did by not coming to atlanta until the 3rd leg of their vertigo tour.

Amen. Got it for $45 when I was a junior in college: all the albums, plus all the B-sides. What could they add to a second box set, anyway?

Okay, I see they're playing Toronto twice in July (sold out already, of course) and apparently once in November, which isn't sold out yet. Going by the Air Canada Centre website, the cheapest ticket is $59.50 CDN. Hmmm.... maybe.

Personally, I'm hoping some of the remixes that Stewart Copeland did for the Everyone Stares doc show up on it. Especially the Tea In The Sahara remix called Strange Obsession.
Well that makes three of us, so far! We'll have to compare notes.

Richard, I don't recall offhand. Did you ever miss one of their shows back in the day?
I was 14 when Synchronicity came out, and deemed to young by my parents to descend into the pit of Hell that was a rock concert. I've seen Sting several times though.
Seeing the insane ticket prices they're charging for this reunion...they should call it RAPED BY THE POLICE TOUR (brought to you by Best Buy).
Anybody looking for the essential live Police experience should buy the two disc "Police Live" set, throw the second disc (Synchronicity Tour) away, and set the 1979 club show on repeat.
My bad. I thought you had only missed one or two for some reason. Well, then you have just as much right to be excited as anyone else. The only time I saw Sting was in New Orleans for Jazz Fest back in 2000. After watching When The Levees Broke yesterday, I fully realized how lucky I was to absorb the full ambiance of the place before shit hit the fan. Powerful stuff.

Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings is a four disc compilation. It covers everything. I received mine as a gift long after the LP's were tucked away.

Fett, I almost agree.

I told a couple of the guys I work with and they all want to be my new best friend. I'm curious just how much they'd be willing to pay to go, but I have a partner in mind already.

Exactly.

Seeing them tonight! Can't wait!
Enjoy. My old boss is gonna be there.

Alan, how was it?

That's incredibly encouraging.
Just got back from the Tampa show and I'm in total agreement with Nordling. I was pleasantly surprised not only by the song selection and order (starting off with "Message In a Bottle" and NOT ending the entire show with "Every Breath You Take"), but by how they kept the show to just the three of them. No back-up singers, no keyboard players, no rhythm guitar, just Sting, Stewart and Andy, and it led to some really great arrangements on some of their classics (especially "Synchronicity II" and "Wrapped Around Your Finger"). And while The Police on record were never really about guitar solos, Summers just tore the joint up tonight, he was fucking fantastic -- not to take anything away from Sting and Copeland though. They all seemed to be having a great time and really got into the crowd's energy.

And yes, Fiction Plane sounds eerily like early era Police.

So now I've seen The Lord of the Rings made into a film, seen the Bucs win a Super Bowl, and seen the Police live. I'm worried God is going to show up tomorrow to tell me I'm done.
Four more days. I'm really excited. I've always thought that Summers was underrated.
Saw them on Monday night. I loved it of course. A couple things to say:

-I almost forgot what a great song Don't Stand So Close To Me is

-I really liked the new take on Wrapped Around Your Finger
