I remember back in the 80's this was a name mentioned a lot in catalogues and reviews as a good series; it appered in all those monthly "checklists" Mile High Comics or whoever would take out a one page ad publishing in the books every month. I got the impression at the time that it was pretty popular and that critics liked it, too, so eventually I gave it a chance and loved it right off. The 1st 4 issues are just great reads, and the overall storyline they start takes almost 30 issues to tell. Great background concept of the pan-dimensional city of Cynosure, great (anti?) hero and supporting cast, offbeat and sometimes genuinely funny back up feature in the Munden's Bar short companion feature in every issue, with a new writer and artist every month. Timothy Truman's art at the time wasn't nearly as polished as it is now, but that kind of added to the book's grim, gritty charm. And John Ostrander wrote w/ a dry and sometimes very funny sense of humor. I'm also a sucker for the aging hero, and time certainly was catching up w/ Gaunt as the series progressed.
But for some reason, I could never get any of my comic geek buddies to even give this a try (despite my success hooking them all on John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee novels). Did any of you read and enjoy this series?
