It's funny that they had these d listers on the two contest rosters. Of course I'd want Sabra and Collective Man on my team while Mr. Fantastic and The Vision do nothing.
Personally I love obscure also ran characters. Perhaps that's why I bought all those cheesy mini-series. Just like rooting for the underdog.

I don't remember any of those guys though. I'd love to see pictures.

EDIT: Didn't see the forum it was in.

That's no different from any woman, really.

You know the joke - "why do brides smile when they walk down the aisle?" "Because they know they've given their last blowjob"

Not that it's considered junk by *everyone*, but for some unknown reason I purchased the first issue of "Howard the Duck". I never bothered going for ish #2.

Also, DC had a series called "First Issue Specials" back in the mid 70s. I bought several of them and was introduced to a couple of my all time fave characters there (Warlord and Bloodstone, as I recall). Unfortunately, I was also introduced to the Creeper at around the same time.

I also had the full run of "Mark Hazzard: Merc" in the Marvel New Universe. But I got better soon afterwards.

Yeah, had some Team America, too.

I think I have a case of those Pope John Paul comics that Marvel published. The catholic school I attended were passing those out like crack.

.............Aaand maybe an Amethyst, Princess of Gem World book...Or two.

I never read it, but I wonder if Amethyst was all THAT bad; Gaiman did make brief mention of the Gemworld in the "Books of Magic", when Dr. Occult took Tim on a tour of the planes of existence.

Amethyst was very oriented towards girls, but I think it's a pretty solid effort all things considered.

I'll bet Neil gaiman could have reworked it 'til it was cool, if he wanted to. Hell, he saved also rans like Cain & Abel and the Demon Etrigan, didn't he? (Yeah, I know about the miniseries; I own it. And yeah, Alan Moore started the Etrigan makeover in Swamp Thing. But Gaiman's take was even better).

I don't know that it necessarily needs to be re-worked, though, of course, someone with as comprehensive a knowledge of myths as Gaiman could probably make it more interesting.

But as it was, it took the standard pre-teen girl "lost princess" fantasy and put it on paper. The Gemworld was a bit stupid of a conceit, but no worse than many fantasy novels - and it was wonderfully rendered by Ernie Colon.

So, aside from the fact that it's a little girly, it's not the most shameful series to have (I may be biased, as I have 6-7 issues of the run).

Robert Rodi's Codename: Knockout...all of them.

I thought I was in for funny, sexy, 'Foxy Brown' / 'In Like Flint' kind of thing, it was Vertigo and I figured that meant instant quality, plus Robert Rodi is an out writer and Angela St. Grace had a gay sidekick named Go-Go Fiasco, so I thought I had no choice but to love it.
Of course my high expectations went down like the fucking Hindenburg as I, after about 4-5 issues, realized that Robert Rodi couldn't write shit if his name was Charmin.

Somehow Codename: Knockout became something I picked up till the bitter end because I'm such a slave for the concept and I had some smidgen of hope that it would get better, but alas...
