Best Remakes? - Page 2

...um, The Thing?
Pat, did you read the list? Or the thread?
I was sorta reading through the thread and I realised I didn't see any mention of the Thing, so I went back and skimmed looking for "The Thing". Guess I missed it?

But no, I didn't bother reading the list.

Watching Miike's Happiness of the Katakuris and the film it was based off 'The Quiet Family' is like watching two different films. Even though I'm a fan of the director (he made A Tale of Two Sisters and A Bittersweet Life after the Quiet Family) his direction of the tale is just totally eclipsed by the sheer wealth of imagination and energy in Happiness of the Katakuris.

The Thing was #2.

None of the above.

Okay, maybe The Thing, but that movie isn't really a remake of the original Thing from Another World. It's different enough from the original in most every area of the story bar the setting that the two movies ultimately can stand up and be regarded completely by themselves, as two fine, distinct, and distinguished sci-fi/horror classics.

I gotta say, even though it's not an improvement on the original, I really like the Manchurian Candidate remake too.
It's okay, I still think Kaufman's Body Snatchers is better but I will say the whole Pod scene was just as good in Ferrara's as it was in Kaufmans... you can't go wrong with pods and sleeping bodies!

Didn't see it mentioned but I forgot about William Friedkin's SORCERER, a remake of THE WAGES OF FEAR. Damn powerful film. (Both of them, actually.)

Also, I really enjoy the THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR remake, before McT completely lost it.

Feelings on 89's Batman compared to 66's Batman: The Movie?
Neither have aged well at all, but Burton's Batfilm was a phenomenon when it came out, launching the concept of marketable comic book films and making a zillion merchandising dollars.

The earlier film is about the worst thing that has ever happened to comics, and that "Biff!" "Zowie!" shit is the reason it took audiences so long to come back around to the idea of serious, intelligent, mature films based on DC or Marvel characters. Perhaps with the exception of Superman, which exists in a realm of its own virtually.

True, But strangely enough Batman Returns, maybe the darkest thing Burton's ever done, is still as potent as ever.

And to add, it may not be a "best" remake, but Nightwatch with Ewan Mcgregor has a special spot in my heart. The original is miles better though, prompting the question: what the fuck ever happened to Old Bornedal?

...or George Sluizer, director of THE VANISHING and its American remake?
