Better late than never, right? Right? ...

Comments-

-No overall best-of? Kevin needed a counterpoint.

-Indie spotlight is an excellent idea. And "Poultrygeist" rocks the shit. That twenty minute zombie massacre is the closest any zombie picture has come to "Dead Alive" in the last fifteen years.

-I wanna know more about "The Hills Have Eyes" hate. You considered it laughable- that's loaded, man.

-The "Dust Devil" DVD was fucking legendary, man.

Yeah, I don't get the "Hills Have Eyes" hate either. It wasn't a fantastic film, but it was such an improvement over the original (A true rarity in this genre) that I couldn't complain about it either. It had semi-decent mutant makeup/effects, actual use of flawed characters, and some graphic violence that worked. The storyline is weak, but as it's a remake, I can't fault it too much for that.

I don't have the seething hatred of the "Saw" franchise (They don't rate highly, but damn if don't like boobytraps) that Alex and many others do either, so that may be the differentiating factor.

Looks like there's some gems in there that have peaked my interest. Thanks!

* I love those "trailers only" dvds. I have a few that are just old Monster Flicks and Drive-In B-Movies. Fun stuff with a group of friends. No narrative to pay attention to and plenty of Over-the-Top marketing hyperbole. Many times the trailer is all you need to see of a flick that can't possibly live up the mastery of the gonzo trailer.

I'm kinda sick of talking about Hills, but it boils down to this- it bored me, it wasn't much different than the original, and I didn't like where it went. I hated that the mutants had a backstory. It made it much less creepy and a helluva lot more silly. The effects were the best part, but even they've been overhyped. The movie wasn't as sick as everyone made it out to be. Same with High Tension. I just don't get the love for either of them, because there's really nothing in either of them that hasn't been done before and better.

Fab, I probably would've included the Dust Devil set but I haven't been able to make through all of it yet.

Darkmite (and the others)- thanks for checking it out- I wanted to shine some light on some of the more hidden titles. (Except more on Marcus soon, as it comes closer to dvd release.) And you're completely about the old trailers- in many cases they're better than the films themselves.

I think it's interesting how polarizing the Hills remake has become, especially when it didn't seem to be such an extreme love or hate sort of thing initially upon it's release. It's also surprising in that if I know even a general understanding of the attitudes and opinions of a particular horror fan , I can pretty reliably guess how they'll feel about most films. Not so at all with the Hills remake. I'm often taken by surprise regarding who likes it and who doesn't. I know Alex isn't alone in his hate or for his reasons why. I know a lot of horror fans who hate it because they feel it's completely dull. I happen to think it's very good, feeling that Devin nailed the interesting subtext (although I'm not sure I see his idea of it, which is a conversation I've been meaning to instigate forever) and, after a second viewing, wholeheartedly agree with Kevin's review of the acting across the board. I do agree that the effects and gore have been overhyped, but then I usually feel the gore on most movies is overhyped. I thought Hostel's brutality was a lot of lip service too when compared to what was promised. Anyway, I like Aja so far. He isn't prefect, but he's shown great potential and understanding of the genre. Maybe not original or the best, but he isn't playing nice and he definitely has an eye, some ability for pacing and some genuine grit. I'll give him some more chances to improve.

Are you a fan of the original HILLS, Alex? The mutants had a far sillier backstory.

I think he definitely has a good eye- I just wish he could do a little more with the narrative. Eh, as much as I've hated his films I'd give him another chance.

The best thing I got out of Hills was this cool little squishy ball they gave away at the first screening that's got bloody body parts inside it. Love leaving that on my desk at work and seeing people freak out when they squeeze it.

Edit: Ian, yeah, I do like the original. Don't see it as sillier, though.

Well, if you're being generous then I'd say they're at least equal. "Caught up in military testing" versus "monster baby killing his family and raising a wild brood" is at worst a fair fight.

Point, but the new one took itself far more seriously.... that's why it was laughable to me. Like that utterly ridiculous scene with Mr. Tumor-neck where he's yelling about what they did to them. Shut up and just hunt them, ya mutant.
Yeah, that was the one scene that they should've left on the cutting-room floor. Completely extraneous, especially as, IIRC, the opening montage essentially explains the situation already.

But the seriousness thing....different strokes, I guess. 'Twas nice to see a survivalist horror movie that didn't feel the need to puncture the tension, I thought.

That was a really fantastic and interesting list, and there's quite a bit I want to check out after reading it. I actually spent a few hours yesterday going through all of the reviews--I should spend more time reading the Creature Corner. I picked up Head Trauma, though, and I can't wait to hear more about Marcus.

I didn't care much for Hills, either. It was beautifully shot, and at times almost oppressive in its tone, but overall I was kind of bored. And once the trailer attack happens, thematically (it's been so long since I've seen the original, so I can't compare) it seemed to devolve into a clumsy re-hash of Straw Dogs.

Thank you sir! Let me know what you think of Head Trauma. I really love what they did with that. I recently got the soundtrack which is actually an alternate track to the movie that works sorta like Floyd with Oz. Interested in how it works out...

Yes, you should. And as for "Hills", I was kind of bored by a lot of it, too, but ya GOTTA admit the trailer scene itself IS riveting. The whole "Will they kill the baby or won't they?" vibe, and the fact that the mom just cold gets SHOT instead of some lame-o attempt at saving them rocked. I love when the happy ending is avoided.

Man! I was just informed by Don May Jr. of Syanpse Films that the next 42nd Street Forever dvd will be entitled the XXX-TREME SPECIAL EDITION and be comprised of 35mm porno trailers from the early 80s.

I just got excited (in the pants.)

I would like to see a UK release for Head Trauma, but none seems likely.

Sounds like the kinda thing that will play in continuous loop at American Apparel.

Ah, 80s porn you see things jiggling that you shouldn't see jiggle. But the thing is it's almost hypnotic.

Yeah, the trailer assault was pretty brutal. Actually, the scene that got me the most was probably that little bit towards the end where he's locked in that freezer with all the body parts and he's trying to smash his way out. I'm not usually claustrophobic, but damn, that made me squirm.

Forgot all about that part. That was pretty evil, too.

I got a hysterical email about this article....

Hello Jackass!

Well we've had our differences in the past but I think for me you just went over the edge with your 2006 list saying, "Fuck You", and that hate anyone who liked Hills Have Eyes remake (which I did), and then you top it off with "your wrong!" Gee "fuck you", "I hate you", and "your wrong!" Well I'll take that as it's meant so I'll quit e-mailing you which probably makes you feel good and I'll stop hitting this site everytime I hit the computer since it WAS my favorite site, even though dreadcentral was and still is a bit superior I kept up with my loyalty to the corner until now. I hope I meet you some day at a convention, horrorfind, cinemawasteland, etc. It's been lovely thanks for the great advice and even the bad advice because unlike you I don't hate people or tell people to fuck off when I don't like their opinions. I get heated yes but never quite as heated as you obviously do. I know it's a HUGE shame but you won't be needing my input or internet presence on your site anymore. Enjoy Alex, it's been real and don't forget to see Raw Meat since you like subway horrors so much.
This, from a guy who used to email me rants practically every day letting me know what he was up to, and even including pictures of him and his son fishing (I shit you not) I haven't responded in months because I was getting creeped out.

Man, why are horror fans always the weird ones?

Some people can't take a joke...

Anyway, on a lighter note- just got the dvd art for Marcus' release in March.

I thought comics fans were the weird ones?

How could this guy possibly not see those comments were meant in jest?

There were no italics! This guy's been emailing me for almost a year now, nonstop.

Here's the full text of another classic (I thought I had deleted them all!)

Rest Stop made no sense what so ever, you didn't like Haute Tension but you liked this? Who were the family? Why throw that in? Why throw the baby or dwarf taking pictures? Why not explain the grape popsickle color found in Jesse's car like the woman in the camper says that they have? Okay the girl was a ghost, the cop was a ghost? Rant, rant, rant! Haute Tension had cinematic quality that is unarguable to those of us able to see it whether you liked the content of the film or not, much like the film Irreversible, but this film was not a cinematic wonder. The girl can't drag the cop three feet on screen but off screen she can get him to the Rest Stop, then she gets drunk in the middle of all this? The Rest Stop explodes how? One canister of propane isn't going to set off like that. Normally I don't nit pick crap like that but this film just has too much. A lot of potentional, great gore scenes, unconvincing acting. Bad film. How did the sex scene get taped that close and put on the tv in the Ranger's Station?

I don't know! For the record- everyone else- I don't hate you because you like The Hills Have Eyes. Honest!

ya know, i was underwhelmed by the remake of hills when i saw it in the theater. i really like it now. but i think the original is sweet too. the way people who hate the reamek talk about it, it reminds me of how i felt the first time i watched it. i'd watch it again....its wierd how hype affects you and hype is all relevant to how much you allow yourself to be hyped up. some people (that emailer) are so nuts about this. i cant beleive how many new people hate me now since ive been writing for this site. and will you (alex) please just give saw 3 a chance!?
