The Spirit by Darwyn Cooke

I hope I'm not the only person reading this. I picked up the second issue the other day and it's quickly become my favorite book. Cooke's art is great, and both issues so far have had nice self-contained stories.

I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read any of the original Eisner stories, so I don't know where the new series stand in comparison.

Nothing will ever top the Eisner stories, but this is a fun read with nice art. If there's a nitpick for me it's that The Spirit isn't that interesting as a character whose adventures need to continue; what made the stories great was Eisner's radically inventive storytelling. Still, if Cooke takes the tack of tring to flesh out the characters and make them unique, that would be a worthy goal.

And his P'Gell is hotter than Eisner's. There, I said it.

If you want to read a much closer approximation of a "modern Spirit", check out Alan Moore's "Greyshirt" in "Tomorrow Stories". Now THERE'S a series I'd like to see continued.

Cooke recently said that he purposely wasn't starting off on a tear, as far as inventive storytelling goes...

"I couldn’t in issue one do a 'Gerhardt Schnobble' or a 'Ten Minutes' because we have to get comfortable with our cast first and set the lay of the land. I think we’ll see more experimental storytelling in the second half of the first year on, once everyone’s a little more comfortable with the character."

Which pretty much eliminates the only criticism of the comic that I've had so far.

He also said the the series will be almost completely made up of single issue, stand-alone stories.

Well, FWIW, we've reviewed both issues, plus the Batman crossover, at rackraids.com. So, no, you're not alone. We don't usually post single-issue reviews here at CHUD, but I'm sure we'll do the first trade collection when it comes out.

I got the Batman/Spirit one, and the first issue. They were both really good, but I have too much other shit to get so this series has fallent to the wayside for me.

Well, as long as he's planning to go there, that's cool, but I disagree. I mean, anyone who's picking up a "Spirit" series is probably expecting something experimental and inventive, and why can't stories like that reintroduce us to the character anyway?

Oh well.
