Wow. If Bush is caught on tape dealing with these guys, they should drop the hammer on him without mercy. Goodbye Heisman and goodbye records. If USC knew, or should have known with the exercise of reasonable diligence, what was going on, they should do the same to USC in regards to wins or national championships.

Oddly enough, the more I hear about this story the more sympathetic I feel towards the Sports Era guys.

This isn't going to effect Bush personally too much (even if he loses the Heisman, he can console himself by swimming in his huge vat of money), but USC could really get hit hard. Not that I have any sympathy -- rules are rules.

I don't see what's so wrong about this. If it's true.

if this is true, it only hurts the NCAA, not Reggie Bush. Everyone already assumes NCAA players get special treatment and a lot of free shit (re: BECAUSE THEY DO).

Reggie will always be a Heisman trophy winner just like OJ will always be one even if they take the trophy away from him. Every future record will always be asterisked with the comment that "reggie bush actually held the record before it was expunged" etc etc.

I guess to some degree it could hurt Reggie Bush, because everytime he does something wrong, on the field or off, some talking head will bring this up. Justified or not, that will lower his marketability.

I'm not saying it'll crush him, but it could be a decent scratch.

I don't know, having your NCAA career wiped out, your Heisman taken away, and basically being labelled as a dirt bag seems like it would affect Reggie's life indefinitely. Furthermore, if these tapes (which sound like they were illegally acquired) are true, Bush may be fighting some pretty serious civil lawsuits involving fraud, unjust enrichment, etc.

As for the "he'll always be thought of as the Heisman Trophy Winner" argument, I'm not so sure about that. I don't think of Ben Johnson as the 1988 100 meter Olympic champion, I think of Carl Lewis. Bush's infractions may not have been as directly related to performance, but you can't tell me that it doesn't make a difference for you and your family to be financially independent during college as opposed to struggling to make ends meet.

If this was a few grand, or even ten grand or so, I probably wouldn't care too much. But over a quarter of a million dollars?

With all the good he has done in the New Orleans community (charity work is what I am speaking of) since going to the Saints, I don't think this will effect him at all when it comes to who his fans are now.

I also read the tapes said he was asking to repay the loans on the tapes, and I don't know if that would hurt him that much. Free money is one thing, loans is another. Both are bad as the NCAA is concerned, but I don't think he will have too much to worry about.

And with this great attitude and good personality he should come out of this ok publicity wise, eventually.

I am completely against taking away records or national championships because of this on the grounds that this was not performance-enhancing money. And because all the big college stars get back door money anyway. And because the NCAA is a shit organization.

I think labelling him a dirt bag is harsh. In regards to breaking the rules, then yes, he should pay the price by forfeiting his awards. But there is just as much sentiment towards these athletes making so many millions of dollars for their respective schools, that maybe they deserve something more besides the scholarship.

I'm not saying it's not a bad thing to break the rules, but the sentiment of him becoming a "dirt bag" may not be there. People will just brush it off, as Starving said.

I haven't heard the recordings. But, reneging on an agreed-upon business relationship after you accept a rent-free 750K home, nearly 300K in cash, and numerous perks sounds like a dirt bag move to me (in addition to violating every important NCAA rule).

I would have less of a problem with Bush accepting 300K as a free-handout from a booster then him getting involved in a business arrangement that he never intended to honor.

I can't argue that most people will actually "care", though, since the vast majority of the populace will forgive all manner of character flaws if you can run really fast.

Hey, at least it's not like he killed anybody.

He should have...the NCAA's punishment is less for that than it is for taking money.
