Blue Dragon - Page 2

I can not get past the wagons without taking some damage! I know exactly where the monsters come out, but one of them always gets off ONE fucking hit. I normally wouldn't care that much about a few achievement points, but I've been playing the game for hours now and only have 10 (points, not achievements).
Yeah, that reminds me, I'm pretty annoyed at the stinginess of the achievements. Two achievements on the whole of the first disc is ridiculous. More developers need to look to Bioshock (for so, so many reasons). Their achievements were perfectly spread out and timed.
I dunno, I kinda like when achievements are just that, achievements.

Successfully playing through a game I bought isn't really an achievement...but say, getting all the chests in the game, or beating the super tough extra bosses is.

It seems like Bioshock just kinda hands achievements out early on, for stuff that every single player will do, which kinda defeats the purpose, if you ask me.
Got the wagon achievement, now I'm stuck trying to get the one for the Mechat fight. Not fun.

I'm glad I got a ton of "nothings", because the prizes are great. Also glad I've spent a ton of time leveling "Generalist" for all my characters, really helpful. Lvl2 Field Barrier makes the game move much quicker.

To play Devil's Advocate, you could conceivably go through the entire game and earn only the secret achievements. The rest of the achievements are really optional things. You don't need to hack anything, you don't need to buy anything, you don't need to research anything, etc.

Oh, Generalist is a must. Having to pick out multiple classes worth of skills to cram into four slots is impossible. And I love combining different classes to see how the character plays.
You guys are making me want to switch my characters over to Generalists... I'm still early on, having just finished the first boss, and I don't know what Lvl2 Field Barrier is, but I knows I wants it. I'm trying not to get too into this one just yet, but I really dig it so far. The slowdown that pops up in battle from time to time is a mild annoyance, but I can deal with it. The game is great. That blasted post battle music is too damn catchy though... It gets stuck in my head!

The reason I'm trying not to get too into yet is that I told myself I would actually finish an RPG for once so I started to go back to Enchanted Arms on the 360. According to the clock on there I'm 36% of the way through the game... and I picked it up the day it came out. I enjoy it quite a bit, but not everyone feels the same about that one.

Then to Blue Dragon...

Then to Eternal Sonata...
If you're really early in the game, most of your characters can't be Generalists yet anyway. You have to gain a certain number of levels to unlock new classes, and I think Shu is the only one who starts with Generalist unlocked.

Once all your characters can take it, though, they should.

I finally just got the device that lets me get into those shielded treasure chests. Those were annoying me, just sitting there taunting me.
Yeah, definitely going to work on getting the field barrier soon. Does gold ever become an issue? I'm at Mural Valley and I'm swimming in gold.
It hasn't been an issue for me. I have about 50,000. I'm not sure they thought we needed so much of it, unless we're expected to pay off Nene at the end instead of fighting him.

The Barrier class has a field spell that makes it so you can just run through most enemies. It costs MP (30 for lv1, 10 for lvl2, 1 for lvl3) every time you kill one, and you don't get experience, but you do get SP for it (which is way more important in this game than XP anyway). I would suggest getting Barrier for ONE person only, leveling it to 10 or so, and then ***very very mild spoiler***use the medals you have been getting to buy NOTHING but Barrier level up, it's much, much easier than doing it yourself.

Just in case anyone is like me and hasn't read an instruction manual in years, Blue Dragon's has all the classes listed with all the skills and what level you get them at.
I am one of those people who doesn't read manuals, but it didn't take me very long to get over that in this case. The class leveling was a mystery to me, and I got to a point where I really wanted to know what I was doing. The class charts are nice to have, but I wish there was a spell list. I still haven't figured out what "Erase" does.

By the way, Game Informer gave this a 9. I was beginning to think that a lot of reviewers didn't get any the night before they did their write-ups. Apparently, this guy got lucky.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I was originally more excited about Eternal Sonata than Blue Dragon. Now I'm beginning to think Eternal Sonata will be a letdown.
Usually in RPGs any spell called erase or a synonym thereof will nullify the positive status effects that enemies cast upon themselves.

My God, I can't believe I know this stuff.

I'm only about an hour in so far, I just escaped from Nene's fortress, and the game's utterly charming. Just disarmingly well designed, I was expecting to be put off by how retro it was, but it's really fun to play so far.
Disc two spoiler:

*Nene just kidnapped Kluke, which freaking sucks. She was the only character I trained in Black Magic. You know what it's like to run a party without Black Magic? Now I've gotta train someone else up.*

Nene is a dick.
thanks for that greg...will now be working on fixing that.

finished disc one today. those 5 boss battles in the fortress had me sweating. only had 12 phoenix talons going into the first one and had to fight the last two without any. worst of all Jiro got smoked in the last fight with the general, luckily I had worn him down long enough where 3 more turns and I came out on top....whew.

I've only just escaped Nene's fortress, but one thing is starting to worry me. Every screenshot in the reviews I've seen suggest that the majority of the game is spent in the desert.

Can one of you kinda people please confirm or deny this?
There was some desert action earlier in my game, but certainly not a majority. I'm in a vast snowscape at the moment.

Man, having two characters with double strike is fucking great. Everyone is training their second class now (having hit the last level that confers an ability in their first), and I just started disc 2.

For those of you that've been playing RPGs for a while, is it just me, or does a *LOT* of Uematsu's music in this game sound like his work from FF7?

What class gives you double strike?
I believe it's Assassin.

My tactic is to train everybody in my front row (Shu, Zola and Marumaro) training in Monk so they get the increased chance of countering any physical attack. Those automatic strikebacks really rack up.

Wait until your Monks get the skill that charged attacks hit everyone.
Yeah, Assassin gets double strike at 35. I had Shu training assassin as soon as I unlocked it, and Zola was already at level 30 for hers when she joined, so it was easy to get her to 35.
I would highly recommend giving Barrier Magic to the person in your party with the highest Magic Sword ability. Magic Sword eventually gets a skill that replenishes magic with every hit. Combine that with MP restoration (the one that gives points back anytime you're moving), and you can use your Field Barrier spell as much as you want and very quickly get your MP back when you run out.

Oh, I've got it. I used to tailor my strategy around the Black Magician's Ground spells. Now it's all about getting my Monk his shot. Once he hits, it's all over. Actually, that ability is so powerful, it's a little annoying. I hope the toughness of the bad guys is going up soon, because the fights are over way too quick.
Does that field barrier always only grant one SP, regardless of the enemy? I still only have the first level of it, so I'm wondering what changes.

It gives half of what you normally would get. Level one sucks, the 30MP it takes to kill something isn't really worth it. Level two is 10MP, and if you use the proper equipment so you have a lot of MP it works out pretty well.

Okay as someone who's only just started the game and only has a measly level 10 team I have to say.

Fuck Lazy Bear and his 100 points of damage.

That cart protection minigame was way easier than what I'd been led to believe, it gave me my 4th Achievement of the game.

So far I've got all my characters at Level 28. With them all having Generalist up to Level 15. Jiro and Kluke are both learning white and black magic, whilst Shu is my speed hitter (Lvl 36 Sword Mage, Lvl 28 Assassin) and Maro (Level 40 monk) is my heavy hitter.

I think I'm near the end of Disc 1, Violet Clouds abound over Jibral, should I be strong enough to make it through?
You have to at least watch the battle at the end of disc one. I'm generally really impressed with the cut scenes in this game, actually. They're some of the best anime I've seen in years.

The end of Disc 1 is brilliant, just some of the best RPG moments I've seen in a long time. The cutscenes, as Greg said are fantastic, and the boss battles are really kinda cool.

I'm just trying to ace that bloody Mechat mini-game. I had a perfect and I got hit by a blue mine just as the screen turned to the cutscene.
Just started playing this (rented it from GameFly) and so far I'm really enjoying it. It was really what I wanted. A nice turn-based JRPG that I don't have to sit there and 'twitch' to.

I haven't had a game that involved swapping discs for a while so we'll have to see how that goes but what I've played so far has been pretty fun. I like that there are lots of skill trees to develop.

I haven't done much reading about the game though, are there lots of different characters you pick up in the game or do many of them die? I don't want to waste a bunch of time leveling up characters who will be leaving my party (or having them wear items when they're just going to go and take them with them).

I figure I'll work my way through this, take a little break, and then move onto Lost Odyssey (well, after I finish beating MGS4 and GTAIV).
Man the characters in this game are the hugest idiots. I just want to smack the crap out them for being morons half the time.

Also, I hate it when I don't get the first attack and I have to wait for 4 guys in a row to sit there and slowly attack me with the most glacially paced attack move ever. Then when I finally do get to attack, I can destroy them all in one hit with Water or Mow Down.

I'm also kind of annoyed that items/gold/experience are hidden in everything. What's that, a pipe, vent, rock, plant, etc. that has gold or a spell or +2 SP? Thanks. Now instead of getting to just enjoy the game I have to wander around and click on everything. At least the stupid Nothing guy gives me some decent crap for wasting my time.

If I hadn't already put something like 30 hours into this game I'd just chuck it (and from my 30 hours of time I've managed to get ... 15 achievement points ... the first 10 I got in the first 20-30 minutes of playing).

So yeah, I'll be glad when I quit playing this and just get to go back to a game where the primary goal is just to shoot people in the face.
I had this game via Gamefly but I returned it today. It was by accident when I discovered that every little thing in the background held money most of the time, but my biggest beef with the game was the slow down during the fights. Plus the dialogue between the characters was so lame, and that Maro character annoyed the hell out of me the few hours I had with him. Hopefully Lost Odyssey will provide a better experince for me.

I gotta add that the colors for the game were very vibrant, really nice. I don't really like the art design of the characters but the art design of the world looked really good.

I finally finished this annoying, annoying game over the weekend. The story was crap.

The most interesting thing in the game were the Dragons you run into in the last map. They're the only challenging opponents you actually encounter and trying to beat them is a blast. I actually leveled my characters from the 60's to basically 80 so I could take out the dragons. When the battles are challenging and you're using all your different abilities and skills the game really shines. Most of the time though, I was just trying to figure out the most efficient way to kill guys in the first round.

It was actually hilarious when I went to go beat the game because 1, the last level has all these stupid switch puzzles that didn't exist anywhere else in the game (and I was so sick of it at that point that I just wanted to beat it). And 2, even when I was powered down by Nene at the end I was doing something like 800 damage per attack to him (thanks to casting an Attack Up spell).

Even more frustrating was that I could have just skipped the last 40 minutes of playtime since the story was so pointless and there was not even a single achievement for beating the game. The last one I got was for activating all the warp devices and that happens BEFORE The last battle sequence.

Oh well, the instant I finished that last battle (and waited for all the credits to roll by) I popped that disc out dropped it in the GameFly sleeve and sent it on its merry way. I am so glad to be rid of it.
