"Becket" finally makes it to DVD

Unbelievably, "Becket" was still one of those classics never to be released on DVD, but apparently that will be fixed on May 15. Peter O'Toole plays King Henry II, Richard Burton is Thomas a Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. Not having been available on DVD, I've actually never been able to see this, but the word is its brilliant. Its one of O'Toole's best actor nominations, and he provides a commentary for the DVD.

Becket, meet my Netflix queue. It's been waiting for you. Sorry you have to share space with Blade Trinity.

Edit: Aaaand, Netflix doesn't have it listed yet. Now I actually have to remember.

I heard about this earlier. But, what studio is putting it out on DVD? I thought that it would be a WB acquistion.

But, if it's not...then who's doing it?

And here I was thinking "Wasn't that the crappy show with Ted Danson?". I'm dumb.

I saw it a few times on TV back in the day. Don't remember too much about the story, but the leads gave some powerful performances.

So not only do we finally get this on DVD, but we might get a treasury of drinking stories to boot? Terrific!

This movie is also getting a small theatrical re-release. If you live in L.A., you can catch it at the Nuart Theatre the first week of February.

The little press release on DavisDVD says MPI Home Video. Not sure who they are, but it has a nice cover.

It's a terrific movie, my favorite O'Toole performance yet, and that includes LAWRENCE.

While you're waiting, check out O' Toole's second appearance as King Henry II, and his second Oscar-nominated performance for that same role, in THE LION IN WINTER.

Wow. I consider his performance as Lawrence to be quite possibly the best film performance of all-time, so that's mighty high praise indeed.

Great, great film. And it features performances from young newcomers Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton.

I love this film, but I still think O'Toole pentultimate performance is in MY FAVORITE YEAR. LAWRENCE is a close-second, if only to buoy the exemplary David Lean creation.

Still, he's great in LORD JIM, THE RULING CLASS, GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS, LION IN WINTER, DAY THEY ROBBED THE BANK OF ENGLAND, THE STUNTMAN, and naturally, CREATOR.

The Ruling Class is one of those criminally forgotten films that needs to be rediscovered. Any of you who haven't seen it, go find it.

I really want to see The Ruling Class and this

The only Becket I care to see on dvd is the one who leaps from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next Leap...will be the Leap home...

And I've already got all his adventures on disc.

What I love about this movie is how it balances the politics of the time with closer looks at the people caught up in them. That, and it's got a great sense of humor. I don't think I've ever had a historical epic make me laugh this much.

King Henry II: Here's my royal foot on your royal buttocks!

-----

King Henry II: Do you know how much trouble I went through to make you a noble?
Thomas a Becket: Yes, as I recall, you lifted your finger, pointed at me and said, "Thomas Becket, you are noble."

Already on my preorder list.
Favorite Line: To his son,who is being invested as The Prince of Wales
"Stop slobbering boy,as I raise you to glory".
This film ran through both my wife's and I mind when we first visited Canterbury Cathedral.

somehow some one sold thier criterion Ruling Class to CD Warehouse and I was able to pick it up for like 18 bucks.

Tomorrow! Discuss!

This had a limited theatrical re-release in late 2006/early 2007 when Venus was in theaters.

I remember it playing at the Landmark in Atlanta, but I didn't get a chance to see it.

Will definitely add it to my ever-growing Netflix queue.

For my money The Lion in Winter contains the best dialogue of any movie ever written (including X-Tro!).

But Beckett...'tis good, too.
