Roddick Press Conference After Loss to Federer

I found this press conference pretty amusing.

I never really cared for Roddick (as a person, not a tennis player), but I think he actually just gained a little respect from me after this.

p.s. - Federer is a machine

Reporter:Your performance here is better than on the court.
Roddick: No shit.

Reporter:How well do you sleep after a night like this?
Roddick: Depends on how much I drink.

Gotta give the guy credit, he takes it on the chin on the court and under a not to easy press he still handles himself well. I like when anyone in sports is honest and can keep the press on it's toes without being a hateful prick. Kudos to Roddick.

Yeah kudos to him. Frankly if I was 1-13 against a player and he was of Federer's calibur I mean my hat would be off to him too. Its like when Sir Charles lost to Jordan all he could do is give MJ credit.

I definitely had negative vibes towards roddick early on, especially during his US open championship run, but I think it was mostly reactionary due to American media's need to coronate Roddick as the future of American tennis.

When sampras retired (even though he isn't the most media savvy guy), it seemed like the media took an active role in creating roddick's persona and it just never jived with me.

Now that they seemed to have gotten off his coattails, I am definitely liking the real andy roddick. He still has a ways to go with his game (too many unforced errors, and too wild a player), he is always getting better.

If Federer weren't around, Roddick would possibly have three or four more Grand Slams. I'm ambivalent about the guy (it goes against my natural tendencies to root for a giant server who plays from the baseline), but I do feel a bit bad for him...especially since he actually didn't play that badly in the semifinal...it's just that Federer played like Jesus fucking Christ. He could be nominated for sainthood after that match.

You've got to love a sport that will fine a guy $20,000 for not showing up at a press conference immediately after he gets trounced on International TV. But Roddick handled it well. My respect for Roddick went up after watching that.

Roddick's always been a bit of a prick. He's got an edge to him, which I like.

But in the last couple years Roddick has gone from an all-the-time baseliner to a fairly proficient netminder. Part of the reason he only has the one grand slam is because he basically decided to rewire his game. It was ugly tennis at the outset. He'd force himself to come in and then not know what to do. Even now he's not completely comfortable up there. But at least he's trying to change his game. The fact that it's been such a rocky road is a testament to his tenacity.

Is there a more dominant player in any other major sport? If Sports Illustrated still mattered, I'd still be wondering how they gave Sportsmen of the Year to Dwayne Wade.

This is true, I admit I was generalizing there. I think he's a fairly well-rounded player now...but in the Age of Federer, that's just not good enough.

While it may not apply to Roddick, I do see your point though. My biggest gripe is with clay court specialists. Bruguera, Muster, etc. I could never get behind them. Especially when there's mass pullouts before Wimbledon starts because either they don't feel comfortable on grass or they're unhappy with their seedings, which reflect their one-court games. I felt this way about Nadal until he got to the Wimbledon finals. That was quite a feat. I still can't stand the pip squeak, but that's neither here nor there.

I find myself rooting for Nadal now and then if only in the hopes that he becomes a legitimate force to challenge Federer on a regular basis.

Federer is phenomenal... but I have to wonder how much greater he could be if someone was actually nipping at his heels and pushing him on a regular basis.

Tonight was incredible. Roddick was serving maybe the best I've ever seen anyone serve, and all it forces Federer to do is play a couple tiebreaks. I have such respect for Federer's skills, and admiration for the way he handles himself... so why do I want him to retire so badly? This is not a problem I have when watching Tiger dominate.

Dammit, I missed it! Stupid work that I have to do! I'm guessing that may have been the most interesting match for the rest of the Open (men's anyway) too.

No shit. He's like something from Westworld. Just an incredibly efficient athlete, and more importantly, doesn't let emotions or nerves dictate his play. And, apparently, a hell of a nice guy, too.

Having a friend who organize the tennis tournament in Montreal, all I hear about Roddick is that he's one hell of an asshole. He even takes the time to insult the kids who runs to get the balls after a match.

Federer and Nadal, on the other hand, are not only top-notch players on the field, but gentlemen as well. Federer deserves the love.

That's the way Roddick! Show those lousy foreigners how Americans act!

The media likes to fellate Roddick because he's American, he's got a big serve (chicks dig the big serve) and he's good looking. So instead of, Wow, this guy is really aloof and he's kind of a cocky prick, it's, Oh, he's so funny and refreshing! I said before in this thread that I like his edge, but really it's wearing thin for me now. There's a line between being sarcastic and being an asshole, and he's on the wrong side.

About the match, it was almost comical. Yes, it was good tennis, but you could see Roddick expending every last ounce of energy he had on every shot, especially in the grunting, which he doesn't often do. Meanwhile you couldn't hear Federer move. He's so effortless out there it's mind-boggling. Federer owned the match from the outset. He's in Roddick's head.

Nothing was more fitting than Federer acing Roddick on set point last night in the first set. It was like a very special FU to Roddick.

Did anyone catch the clip of the two press conferences on ESPN? At one point Roddick says something to the effect of, "Despite what he [meaning Federer] said, I don't think it was a piece of cake for Roger." In the next clip Federer says something like, "It wasn't a piece of cake for me, I don't know where he heard that."

Interesting. Could it be Connors, stoking the fires?
Connors is a douche, but I still love him. I go back and forth on Roddick. For last night, I was in his corner.

And while I cheer for Roddick, I don't mind Federer's absolute dominance over men's tennis. I actually enjoy it. But the weird thing is that I can't stand Tiger when he's unbeatable.
Federer is a shark. Imagine how great he'd be had he been born with sweat glands!
I neglected to mention in my post that Roddick is obviously a big asshole, which makes my rooting against Federer all the more baffling to me. Still, I definitely prefer Nadal to Andy.

On a side note- is anyone else completely taken with Anna Chakvetadze?

It's not weird, Federer is a great person. While Tiger is kind of an annoying douche like Roddick.

Yeah, she's a cutie. Has no chance of winning the finals, but I look forward to seeing her in the future.

I love routing for Federer as well, but a part of me wants Djokovic to beat him again. His Sharapova impersonation is second to none!

That was amazing. I was sitting on the couch with my dog, who was fast asleep. Roddick wins the point before, and does the "C'MON CROWD, GET INTO IT!" gesture, and I mutter aloud, "Uh oh, he's fucked."

Bam, ace. I laughed so hard in amazement, my dog woke up spooked and ran to the kitchen.

Federer is a very gracious Terminator.
