Really interesting article here.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military drive to train and equip Iraq's security forces has unwittingly strengthened anti-American Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia, which has been battling to take over much of the capital city as American forces are trying to secure it.

U.S. Army commanders and enlisted men who are patrolling east Baghdad, which is home to more than half the city's population and the front line of al-Sadr's campaign to drive rival Sunni Muslims from their homes and neighborhoods, said al-Sadr's militias had heavily infiltrated the Iraqi police and army units that they've trained and armed.

"Half of them are JAM. They'll wave at us during the day and shoot at us during the night," said 1st Lt. Dan Quinn, a platoon leader in the Army's 1st Infantry Division, using the initials of the militia's Arabic name, Jaish al Mahdi. "People (in America) think it's bad, but that we control the city. That's not the way it is. They control it, and they let us drive around. It's hostile territory."

When they say unwittingly I'm not so sure I can agree with that based off what I've read of the article. It seems the soldiers know the deal, but they follow orders and are stuck continuing this fucked up situation.

"Unwitting" could be pretty much describe every action taken by the White House. These guys are the keystone cops of politics. They're basically a reverse canary in the coal mine. Anything they predict, the opposite will happen. If Cheney said the Colts will beat the Bears, mortgage everything and put it down on the Bears in a blowout.

The Brits actually let al-Sadr "slip out the back door" (literally, in fact) a couple years ago, without telling the U.S., because they reasoned that it would be better not to disrupt any relations with Iraqi shiites by getting rid of him. In retrospect probably not the best of ideas...clearly they underestimated the guy.

It'll be interesting to see how al-Sadr gets on with Iran, who's obviously trying to help stir up the civil war (though I'm not sure as to what purpose, aside from watching the U.S. twist in the wind)...they've got a core religious faith in common, but Iraqis are still a firmly regional people...if you're an Iraqi shiite, odds are you still hate Iran regardless. So if a shiite government actually forms in Iraq, it's not like it'll be Iran-friendly.
