Dlr Back In Van Halen

Thread Starter
TMZ.com (when the hell did this website become THE place for celebrity news) is now confirming that Diamond Dave has rejoined Van Halen for their upcoming tour and their appearance at the March 12th Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony...which will also have Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony in attendance.

For every VH fan out there, I hope to God that they can keep this thing together for a couple dozen shows before it eventually goes off the tracks.

My wife and I will be in line for tickets. Hopefully, they'll find stages big enough for the mammoth egos of Eddie and Dave.

I wish that they could patch things up with Michael Anthony, though. While his bass playing is nothing that can't be easily replaced, his backup vocals are a big part of the overall VH sound. I understand that his deep friendship with Sammy is the main reason for the split with the VH brothers. Here's hoping that the RnR HoF induction gives them a chance to bury the hatchet and put the original foursome back together...

Even If Roth was still sexy and didn't look like the love child of Phyllis Diller and Elmer Fudd I'm still not sure if I'd be interested in this; I imagine that a lot of people are beyond the point of caring anyway.
They just announced the tour dates on a live press conference on CNN.com. Eddie Trunk is supposed to replay it later tonight on XM 41, and I think VH1C will replay it, too.

I haven't found a list of show dates yet, and I missed the conference, but I hear Dallas and Atlanta aren't on the initial run.
Poor Gary Cherone, reduced to anonymous "third singer" status in the CNN.com write-up.
I guess I'm just a gooey optimist, but I really hope this works out.
"Roth, 52, spoke virtually nonstop at the press event, promising that the band's upcoming 25-date North American trek was merely the precursor to a world tour and to a new album."

Good thing Dave NEVER exaggerates, huh?

Has it ever?
Fuck that. Their website now only addresses the DLR years. That's a crock.
When Sammy was with them they ignored the DLR years. Doesn't make it right (it's not) but that is how they operate.

Regarding the tour. Cleveland, OH here I come October 10th.

http://www.van-halen.com/tour.html

I have been waiting for this for so damn long.

That kid is getting chunkier by the minute.
By the time he gets to Cleveland he'll explode.
Hey I love the band. Seen them with Sam and with Dave (in the 80's when it mattered). I'm just a little chafed that they disregard some of their really good stuff just because of the flavor of the moment. They didn't really have a web site with Sam. Was too long ago.
When I saw that picture I seriously thought Rosie O'Donnell joined the band. No joke. He looks just like her there.
Did I tell everyone where I'll be on October 10th? If anyone wondered what could get a woman in her late 30's to giggle, this is it.

And yes their official site should be comprehensive. Now I'm not a Sam fan (like him better on his own - btw, he is touring this year and will have Michael with him) but there was some solid music produced during his stay.

Because the legacy of a band begins and ends with content on their website. Rock n' roll!
Well, they look happy in that picture, and I hope that remains.
I doubt it. See them fast before this tour falls apart.

Amen to this. I saw the first show of the last tour, and they were great. Apparently, Ed was tripping over his mic cables, and drunkenly playing stuff that couldn't be recognized as actual songs by the end of the tour.

I think I might head up to NC for an early show like I did last time. If anyone from ATL is interested, let me know.

How is Wolfie going to get any cougar tail if he doesn't atleast try to get some abs. The kid is 16, he has no business being ready to co-star with Kirstie Alley in commercials.

Seeing how they didn't make it through a full tour last time and tickets were at $200, wtf are they charging for this?

If they wanted to impress me, they should have made an album first. A good one preferably.

Well, it's not like Michael Anthony had abs of steel. I'm not sure whether the presence of DLR is enough to compensate for the presence of Wolfie. Especially since DLR's voice isn't what it used to be. But still, it would be cool to the original band (mostly) together.

Indeed. I'm not too big on these pure nostalgia tours. Get back in the studio, and quick.

Were the new songs on that last hits package any good?
They just have to hold it together until December 5th. Pleeeeeeeease....

And Christ is Eddies' kid doughy.
Chris, I was trying to say, "whats the point of being a 16 year old rock star, if you aren't going to have any girls under 35 at your concerts."

I don't want to think of the skanks that want to fuck Michael Anthony, but at least he is more age appropriate for them to get it on with.

To answer your question, the tracks on the last greatest hits package were terrible. But then again, I am of the camp that thinks that every Sammy album was made to make the previous Sammy album look like a masterpiece in comparison. 5150 is a good album, ou812 has like 2 good songs and FUCK is shit. Balance I listened to maybe twice.

Fair enough. Though hopefully some of the leathery plaster casters will bring their teenage daughters.

Hey, even DLR can only handle so many at a time. Some are bound to slip through the cracks.

I didn't like the new songs on the '97 hits album, so if they were anything like that I'll pass.

I agree that OU812 is weak, but I love FUCK. I'd say it's a lot like 5150, maybe a little heavier. Balance is solid, but a little too serious. And III is... well... nah, I never listen to that one.
Balance has 'Feelin' on it and that is a great song.
I liked Balance because it was a little darker, and Eddie has never sounded better. Some of his riffs on this thing are unbelievable... Especially on The Seventh Seal and Beluchitherium (instrumental)...

I prefer Hager era over Roth, though. I think the collection of albums is just stronger, even though Roth gave VH some greats.
Alex and Eddie have hardly aged at all. Damn Eddie looks a lot better and healthier than pictures I've seen of him the last few years. He looked anorexic at one point.

That is a good one. I also really like "Don't Tell Me", "Aftershock", and "Take Me Back". And I'd be lying if I said the very poppy "Can't Stop Loving You" and "Not Enough" aren't catchy, although not quite the direction I'd like to see the band take.
I can't help but follow every piece of VH news that comes down the pipe (favorite band ever, besides my guilty pleasure... Journey). Saw them on the Balance tour. And I saw DLR solo twice (with Bad Company & the David/Sammy tour). Loved the Crazy From the Heat autoboigraphy (for its rambling conversational nature) and I learned to play guitar practicing VH tunes. These guys are entertainers and rock in both famous incarnations. Wish they were coming to FL.

Diamond Dave is charming as ever in that press con.
Well, charming is one way to describe it.

I also found that autobiography a fun read. I wonder what percentage is true.

Those who live or are near Toronto, Philadelphia or Greensboro, NC - tickets are on sale right now.

Cleveland is till TBA
Wish me luck on getting good seats - Cleveland tickets go on sale this Saturday.

This still hasn't fallen apart yet? Amazing.

I'd say at this stage if concerts are not performed there would be some legal problems for the boys.

What I am more concerned about is if Dave can hold up on this tour singing 25 songs (minus a few for solos).
I'm maybe a little mroe excited for this than I should be. I'm not buying tickets for this, but I want to see them live. Even if DLR can't hit his pitches.

Same here. He doesn't sound too bad in this performance of "Jump" from last October, but I've heard some rough stuff elsewhere.
Hrm... the only tickets left for Greensboro seem to be behind the stage. I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy expensive tickets, and this isn't helping my decision. Sure would like to see Dave with the guys, though.

For some reason, when I saw him tour with Sammy, he refused to keep up with the band rhythmically. He was either behind or ahead of the music with every note. I suspect he was pretty drunk as he "jerked off" a bottle of Jack onto the crowd. As he says in his book, he can never really remember the words and improv'd alot at live gigs anyway. Still flashed his pearly white Cheshire grin the entire time though. Glad to see he cut his hair finally, as his "balding but still keepin it long" look was sad.

I'm bummed that none of "Vegas stuff " (that he mentioned in Crazy from the Heat) ended up on cd. I do own his DLR Band stuff and enjoyed it.

Do you have this album:

It's got a bit of a Vegas feel. I actually like it better than the previous DLR Band disc.
Well if they can make it to Oct 10 (my and dave's Bday incidentally), I can make it to Cleveland. See you there Eileen.

On a side note, Ticketmaster's online system sucks. I'm pulling better seats now than when the sale started this morning. This venue is in dire need of a price tier between the 125 and 75, waaaay too many so so seats had top tier prices.
Man, the 10th cannot come fast enough! The boys did some rehersals in LA recently and here is a clip. Granted the quality is not the best but damn this is going to be great.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qU7dzXNYzs

There's some more clips on the right from the same person who put this one up. In the Panama jam you get to hear Wolf sing and I like how Dave says "Nice try Jr" lol

I remember VH last visited sydney during the Gary Cherone era, I skipped it. I wasn't much of a fan at the time, I've since listened to their debut album which is a pure blast of rock'n'roll.

Does anyone know why Michael Anthony was dropped from the band?

I've been a fan since I took up playing guitar in the late 80s. I also skipped the Cherone era Sydney visit and actually regret that a lot now. I didn't mind Van Halen III, after a while it really grew on me.

I sincerely hope they can make it down to Sydney in this current incarnation, I'll be going for sure.

You can read a good interview with MA here. He talks about the split, but I don't think he was given a good reason for it, aside from his friendship with Samuel.

Nothing concrete but I'd say it has to do with problems on the last tour with Sammy. Eddie had nothing to do with them so Mike and Sammy got closer and started doing concerts together after VH split up. Also, on the last VHSam tour Eddie and Alex took away Mike's revenue deal and just had him as a hired musician. Mike was unhappy about that but still went on the tour because he enjoyed working with Sammy.

Mike did come out with a statement because many fans were wondering why he was not on this tour. He said he was not asked and said for the fans not to take it out on Wolf because he is a good kid and does not deserve to be caught in the middle of his and Ed's feud.
Damn. Nice to see Michael Anthony is being adult about all this.
