BF 2142 - best game i've played in years

normally most games get boring for me after 30 minutes. a really good game might hold my interest for several hours. but once every several years a great game comes along that i can't stop playing for weeks and months. right now it's BF 2142.

if you've played another battlefield game (BF 1942, BF vietnam, BF 2) this is similar but better. the future tech is just a little advanced - invisibility, hovering tanks, battle mechs - but the sounds, graphics, and mapping are amazing. each map is really well done and seems like a whole immersive world. it also has two new features that are pretty cool: one is titan battle mode where each team has a giant floating battleship and the goal of the round is to protect yours and destroy the enemy's titan, and the other cool thing is the rewards/ranking system. as you play you are updated, in realtime, about awards you win and promotions in rank. it's really fun and kind of addictive. for example if you kill four people with a pistol in one round, a little pin will pop up with a distinctive sound and show you that you won the pistol pin.

i'm using the 1.10 version for bf 2142 and it works fine. it just replaces the startup executable so that it doesn't look for the disc in the drive

i'm surprised people don't like it. i'm very picky about games - i get bored, frustrated or annoyed with most games within hours or even minutes. but 2142 has enough depth that i keep playing every day. some of the stuff i like:

being commander on a small conquest server - you can really make a big difference in the round, and it really feels like you're the commander when you're zooming all around the satellite map spotting enemies for your guys and supporting them with supplies or artillery.

playing conquest on a titan map - i've been doing this non-stop for a week now and i love it. basically you end up with an all-vehicle game because the maps are huge. so on a large server (40+) you can have epic armor fights with 10 tanks vs 5 walkers and such. really fun

titan defense/offense - guarding or attacking in the twisty hallways is a whole different game than everything else. it's really fun to get a nice trap set and watch the enemy walk into it, and mow them down.
