Race and GTA

Thread Starter
I remember when news of GTA:San Adreas first came out...and the fact that the main character was Black and that the storyline focused on street gangs. Around different internet forums, including G4 and some others...there were obvious signs of racial bias. Some people coming right out saying that they didn't want to play with a Black character. I remember reading a Next-Gen GTA wishlist on the RottenTomatoes forums and one of the things this particular poster wanted was a white character.

My question is...what difference does it make? Is it that GTA has become such a huge franchise, that some people feel that a minority main character is below the standard? I actually think SA was a breathe of fresh air...I got tired of playing with these psuedo-Italian mafia's. Some people also say GTA was MEANT to focus on the mafia...which is hard to believe. GTA is abut crime and the criminal underworld...no matter if it's a street gang or a Mafia. There's no developer notion that GTA HAS to be about the mafia.

I also think for some reason, people have this reactionary respect for the Mafia as opposed to a street gang. As if any one group is better than the other in terms of legality. But even look at Hollywood...gangster films that revolve around the Italian Mafia like The Godfather, Goodfellas, etc are seen as classics...while gangster films that revolve around minorities or street gangs like Menace 2 Society aren't.

Either way, I think the next GTA should give the player the ability to customize the main character. A game out now for the XBOX 360 called Saints Row does that and it works fine. Not to mention SR makes GTA look sh*tty in terms of gameplay and graphics!!

You could customize the character (to an extent) in San Andreas.

To be fair, The Godfather and Goodfellas are classics because they're brilliant films, something Menace 2 Society isn't.

But I agree with much of your post. When people started bitching that the protagonist of San Andreas was black I got a bit annoyed. These idiots can't get into beating a hooker to death with a baseball bat if the beater is brown? Give me a fucking break.

Here's hoping GTA4 centers around a Hispanic lesbian (didn't GTA3 have one?)

To the contrary, it made it much easier for me to be sucked into the game. I mean we all know how blacks like to break the law.

It's a joke you racist fuckers.

*swipe the text above you humorless bastards.

This is the most important part of Shao's thread. Why GTA didn't ditch their broken saving and aiming systems years ago I'll never know.

I'm not a fan of these games actually. Well, for the first few weeks of playing I am, but everytime I get to a part of the game I just cannot beat and I get too frustrated. Case in point, I've been stuck at the RC helicopter mission giving to you by Zero in SA. For the last year and a half. For real. I am ashamed.

Zero's mission are optional. You don't have to beat them to go on.

Well.....fuck...I am officially a "R-Tard". Looks like I'll be going home tonight to play this game. And thank christ it's optional.

I spent a good 3 hours trying to finish that Zero mission with the toy planes and during that time a lot of random shit got thrown around the room, I swear I will be playing that mission in hell and running out of fuel just before I reach the base. I didn't want to throw the controller due to a previous experience of breaking one, they cost money.

Post mission was the most careful journey to a save point I have ever done.

Completely off the subject of GTA, but still concerning a sandbox game: Just Cause for Xbox. I finished a pain in the ass mission that I never wanted to do again. I start to head for a highway so I can request a pickup and some asshole runs into the gas pumps next to my guy randomly. Bullshit.

Save anytime=Saint's Row. Probably the reason why I actually bought and finished it.

Yeah that sucks, I am completely anal when playing GTA too, I will reload games when I die or fail a mission...of course, if I died on the way back from that mission I probably would have let it slip.
