Here's the news of the day: http://chud.com/mastercontrol/8808

ArsTechnica's got a demo impression of Def Jam: Icon, and kinda underwhelmed, saying that the gameplay's not as down-to-earth (hur) as the previous games. http://arstechnica.com/journals/thum.../2007/2/8/6965

Now then... Spore. How many pounds of your flesh are you willing to sell for it?

Great job!

Was hoping you post the PS3 story because I was at a Target about two weeks ago and saw a display case full of PS3s.

Bless Sony's heart for trying.
I read that also and laughed as I was in EBgames on saturday and they must have had at least 12 Ps3's sitting behind the counter collecting dust.

All this talk of XBox exclusives being ported over to the DS.... Its clear that MS views the DS as a key to expanding their 360 branding in Japan, but so far it hasn't worked out. I just hope that the US also sees the benefits should MS or Rare make, er, release DS games.

You'd think I would have picked up Gripshift by now considering all the good word-of-mouth it's received. I should try to pick up a copy before it becomes some rare collector's item or something.

Love those games, but damn do they make me feel like I was the only one to survive an apocalypse.
That Star Wars game looks interesting. Although I guess it would be asking too much that they would've called Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice "Darth Vader's Dark Apprentice" instead. Then we'd have miles and miles of DVDA jokes. But I guess DVSA can be twisted as well.

Today's: http://chud.com/mastercontrol/8907

How about it, folks? Do you like to fly in the face of adversity?
That article (Gamasutra, not Ian's) belabors the point a little, but yes, if used sparingly, defeat or despair can be a very effective way of investing you in a game. Shadow of the Colossus (SPOILER I AM RUINING THE END OF SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS) had a sequence in its finale where you can literally try for minutes to fight the vortex sucking the cursed Wanderer back into the void. It was balanced in such a way that it seemed like you might be able to pull free but it was actually impossible, and unless you wanted to hang in there for ten minutes fighting the inevitable you just had to let go. It was a nice touch, especially coupled with the tragic irony of your actions in the game.

Am I way off base? Is an MMO the next logical progression for the Elder Scrolls?
I can see it as the next step. The game is supposed to be open-ended and the world is purposely designed as huge. so with that philosophy in mind MMORPG would allow them to accomplish their goals.

I made the decision to steer away. I know I'd become way too obsessed.
I think it would work better as co-op. Maybe 4 people playing together. You never have to stay together, but whenever it comes down to a hardy dungeon, you can summon your buddies there. A MMO, and I'm thinking they mean like World of Warcraft MMO, just doesn't sound all that appealing. Unless they can FORCE decent names and non bullshit speaking, it'll just seem out of place. Although, being able to play in all the whole Elder Scrolls world would be pretty sweet...Wait! What about one where one of your buddies is the Big Bad and can populate dungeons, Dungeon Keeper style, and transport from baddie to baddie trying to kick your ass! And has a huge motherfucking castle with traps and shit and...nah, nevermind.

Wow... thanks for that adventure game link. I'm gonna check all of those out. Almost done with Phoenix Wright, after all...
Doing an indie adventure game is one of my tiny little dreams which has somehow yet failed to materialize. I'm simultaneously inspired and defeated by the amount of talent on display in those games.

I'm not usually one to take sides or point fingers when it comes to gaming. I love gaming for gaming's sake, the good, the bad, the ugly, warts and all etc etc... but a lot of Sony's recent stuff, mostly revolving around the PS3 just kind of rubs me the wrong way. The arrogance set forth in the past is just kind of disturbing and is enough alone to turn me off to the PS3, but a lot of the recent stuff just seems too reactionary and "me too" to do them much good.

A network incorporating elements from Xbox Live's achievements to Nintendo's Miis will just fall in line with how their sixaxis motion control was met. There're a lot of grey areas since I don't know the whole picture but if it had been part of the plan all along then it wouldn't get me feeling so queasy. I'm not even going to bother mentioning the rumble stuff... ugh.

At the end of the day Sony will probably be fine. It's good news for fans and system owners, but it also just gives more ammo to detractors.

Bleh!
Congratulations Sony. The PS3 has finally achieved basic functionality.
You use a default Mii?! Ludicrous!
I'm pretty ludicrous. My wife loves designing Miis... then again, she doesn't actually play on the console.
Ummmm....how is Sony going to add rumble back into the sixaxis without making their prior statements appear ludicrous? Anyone out there want to tackle this P.R. job? Anyone?
Phil Harrison will do it! There's something in the way he's wired (incredible arrogance or stupidity, you make the call) that allows him to take the most ludicrous pro-Sony stance possible on every single issue. I understand he's supposed to be a pro-Sony flack but he takes things to another level.
The agreement between Sony and Immersion doesn't specifically say that it'll be the Sixaxis that gets the rumbling treatment. I mean, it'd be silly not to put it in there, but.... I dunno.

The backpedalling from the claims that rumble is not next-gen will be fun to watch.
Phil Harrison:

"Um, of course rumble is so last gen. I said it. Because all our awesome PS2 games are backwards compatible on the ps3 it makes complete sense to implement it for our loyal sony sucka...customers. If existing developers totally want to incorporate last gen rumble features in newer next-gen ps3 games, so be it.

On a side note, if there is any kid out there with liver failure who cannot find a PS3 on store shelves - he can have mine"

Phil Harrison, again:

"I hate it when you press people totally misquote the things I say. That trailer trash kid is definitely not taking my liver or my ps3. I CHANGE MY MIND!!!!!!!"

It's on the PSP, too. Just those two platforms for the predictable future, though.

It took four of us probably two hours go get all the way through the Turtles arcade game back in the day. It was a lot of fun but the ending was worthless. This was at one of those birthday parties where Aladdin's Castle opened the place after hours and loaded up unlimited credits. I remember thinking afterward I should have spent more time playing the big X-Men arcade game.

Thinking about it now, I bet the parents had to pay for every credit put into those machines. God, that must have been expensive.
