The Departed Two-Disc Special Edition discussion

IGN's review:

http://dvd.ign.com/articles/763/763175p1.html

This is my most anticipated DVD release since, maybe, I can't even remember. I'm especially looking forward to "Scorsese on Scorsese". It's always fun watching a master talking up a storm about his greatest endeavors.

And I gotta say, that DVD menu is one of the coolest I've seen. And so is the cover (http://www.movieweb.com/dvd/release/79/116979/cover.php).
The DVD cover is alright.

We actually showed it on the site two weeks ago with a list of the extras HERE.

That review seemed kind of like - I don't know, it was 9 out of 10 but they were kind of dismissing the movie much of the review. I just don't think the review was a 9 out of 10 sounding review. I don't know.

I loved it and had it pre-ordered a few weeks ago, so I can't wait to watch it again.

I'll be picking this up Tuesday! Can't wait to watch this again.

Not as cool as the limited edition steelbook cover:

that is awesome. I want that.

pre-order from Amazon cancelled.

Will get this from Best Buy
I'm not fond of the cover, personally. It's one step removed from floating heads. It's the "everyone standing around looking grim" poster made popular by The Matrix.

I don't know whether to get the steelbook from Best Buy or the Target special edition that comes with the script...

Great review Nick.

Is the Two-Disc editon limited? Or is only Universal that does the "limited for a week" thing and not WB?
I was going to pick up the Target release, but now I'm going for that awesome Best Buy steelbook.

I believe that it's only Universal that does that limited for a week thing. I'm still seeing 2 disc copies of V For Vendetta, and Superman Returns at the stores.

I didn't even realize there were limited edition versions being released in certain stores. This is a flick that deserves the limited edition treatment. Luckily I have 30 bucks in Best Buy Reward Zone certificates saved up, so I may just pick up the steel book and script versions. When Best Buy releases their exclusive DVD packages, they sell out like wild fire. I'll be there right when it opens at 9 am and then head out to work.

Nope. The two-disc special edition is an official release that will be available in all outlets indefinitely. The stores churning out the exclusive packages (Best Buy, Target) are limited.

Nick, your enthusiasm for this film in your review mirrors mine. I thought I was nuts for even thinking that this flick could one-up GOODFELLAS, but it delivers on all of my filmmaking needs with an ease and efficiency that I haven't felt a film has achieved in what seems like ages. It may very well be in my Top 10 of all-time.

Finally something to put my $50 Futureshop gift card to.

Grabbing the Steelbook edition first thing Tuesday.
I was going to get this on Blu-Ray, but apparently it doesn't include the Scorsese on Scorsese documentary. What fucking bullshit is that? A bigger disc and they're cutting out extra material. Looks like I'll just get the 2 disc standard dvd with the cool case from Best Buy.
I'll be buying the Blu ray edition. Way better quality than standard Dvds.

Yeah, thats not enough for me. If it was I would have been buying those stupid Superbit dvds. With atleast 50 gbs of space I expect quality picture, quality sound, and above all as a film loving dvd addict, quality extras. WB has decided to hose those with high def dvd players. Already have to pay way more, and we get less extras.

I picked up the special Best Buy edition today at lunch, and it is outstanding. Absolutely balls-out cool packaging. And $23 for what looks to be a pretty stacked 2-disc edition seems like a bargain. Anyway, I can't wait to give this thing a spin tonight.

(My local Best Buy had a huge display with tons of these things, by the way.)
The packaging is pretty damned sexy.
I can't decide if I want the Best Buy edition or the Target edition w/the shooting script.
I got the Best Buy edition. I got Subtitle function if I want to read the script.
Got the Best Buy edition.Love it.The "postcards" are actually pretty neat.
Since I work in Malibu and there isn't a Best Buy within 25 miles, I went to the site and did the Instore pickup thing. Seemed the best way to go to insure I get that sexy packaging. Also I had just gotten a 50 dollar giftcard for BB from my credit card points, so score for me!

I would disagree with you, as obviously the subtitles aren't the same as the screenplay, but then the only other time I've gotten a script as an extra bonus from a store was for War of the Worlds. Guess how many times I read through that? I'll take the cooler case. What happened to the days when they'd do the script to screen feature on dvds? That was pretty cool.

I love the French name for the film: Agents Troubles

Makes it sound like it's merely a minor disturbance of what they're going through in the movie.
Didn't get a chance to make it out to Best Buy today- did anyone notice if they had the hybrid HD-DVD/DVD version?

Better than the German title: Nobody Dies

I liked the part where he asked the girl if she had her period. =3

Man, that Scorsese on Scorsese documentary is great stuff. It was the first thing I put in and watched when I got it.

That's quite misleading. Unless they re-cut the movie for Germany so nobody does die. Which would be oddly interesting.

While the SCORSESE ON SCORSESE documentary is indeed a fairly informative watch (as are most Schickel documentaries), I'd still suggest honing your skills with A PERSONAL JOURNEY WITH MARTIN SCORSESE THROUGH AMERICAN MOVIES and MY VOYAGE TO ITALY, which pretty much encapsulate everything that's amazingly spectacular about Scorsese.

But, back to THE DEPARTED and how pissed I was that both my Best Buy and Target had already sold out by work's end. Still, managed to order the Tin, and with that, the waiting game begins.
Just watched this again and enjoyed it quite a bit. Its only grown in stature.

But Gimme Shelter is totally played out.

I actually own the coffee table book for A PERSONAL JOURNEY WITH MARTIN SCORSESE THROUGH AMERICAN MOVIES. I bought it after seeing the film based on it in my "History of Gangster and Western Films" class in college.

I noticed two movies Scorsese skipped over in the Scorsese on Scorsese feature - Color of Money and Casino.

I guess I can understand skipping Color of Money, although it did have two of the biggest actors of our time in Cruise and Newman, but why did he not say hardly anything about Casino?

Is it a movie he is not proud of?
There still isn't a decent dvd of Color of Money either. How can I have a Hustler SE dvd but not a Color Of Money SE sitting next to it?

That's a pretty funny title, given the climax of the movie.

Indeed it is. The only things in my collection that can compete with the packaging is my Alfred Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection set and Batman: The Animated Series volumes. And those "postcards" are a lot cooler than they should be, so cool that I didn't want to bend them by accident.

I'll be having a mini-Scorsese marathon this weekend, so that's when this sucker will be getting some attention.

I wasn't able to go today to Best Buy, but I'm going tomorrow. Here's hoping that it's not sold out of the steelbook edition.

It was a joke...

I'd just like to say fuck this thread and its geeky enthusiasm, as it sent me out into the treacherous snow today to buy one of these for me and one for my dad-in-law.

There were plenty left, though dwindling in comparison to the regular version, and there was an empty slot for a DVD/HD hybrid, which is something I think I'll be a sucker for in months to come.
I got mine today at work. Havent got to watch but will tomarrow

Explain to me this logic: The Best Buy in my town had a ton of The Departed Special Edition tins. However, they are not stocking the Infernal Affairs Trilogy, nor are they stocking the separately sold special editions. Why would a store not try to take advantage of the movie by sticking it right next to the brand new editions of the movie it is a remake of. The guy who worked in the DVD department did not even know The Departed was a remake.

Then again, Wal-Mart here stopped selling Firefly the week before Serenity came out on DVD.

DOES NO ONE WANT TO MAKE ANY MONEY?
I was able to pick up the Best Buy steelbook, and it is definitely worth the money. They had quite a few left, but they had definitely sold a lot, and that was when I went around 2, and this is only the day after the release.
It's a fucking bitch to get the top disc out of the departed steel case. I feel like I'm gonna break the damn disc in half on of these times.
I got the target edition with the script and the script itself is okay. I'm having a little buyer's remorse wishing I had picked up the Best Buy version.

Same here, man. Plus the front half of the DVD case I got at Target was messed up. It looked like they tried to shrinkwrap the front plastic on it.

I'm heading to Best Buy today and try to buy the steelbook version. I'll push off the Target Departed on someone else and keep the script.

My Target disc had exactly the same deformity. It must have been some kind of mass manufacturing fuck-up, or something.

This is the same logic that had MGM pull all the pre-existing copies of the 007 films off shelves right when Casino Royale came out to make room for the "sorry if you only want Goldfinger, you're getting four more crappy Bond films to go with it" boxed editions that weren't comin out for another month.
