I'm sure we're all happy about this, right?
So, is this movie actually any good,
or is it all nostalgia that makes people talk about it left and right...?
This movie is not the second coming. That being said its fun and quite intense for a kid flick.

I still remember being shocked at the Wolfman parts when I saw this in the theater as a child.
To this day I still own a horrible-quality copy of it on tape.. and to this day I still love the shit out of it.

Of course, I'm a sucker for movies from my childhood.. and the Wolf-man! His phonebooth transformation, gurgling out gobs of saliva through his growing fangs as he tries to warn the cop on the phone.. possibly my fave scene in the movie. Yeah, it wont bring you cosmic enlightenment.. but its entertaining as hell
post #5 of 67
...I haven't seen this in almost 10 or so years...I'm scared that it won't be anywhere near as cool as I remember...but it left such a vivid impression of just sheer coolness when I was a kid...well I hope it doesn't suck. Either way, I'm buying it the day it comes out.
I heard news about this a few weeks ago, and have been frantically searching for new on this, and continue to do so. This will complete my childhood favorites on DVD list (the other two being The Goonies and The Neverending Story). I haven't seen the movie in its entirety in years (I have a copy on VHS, but no VCR), only bits and pieces via clips on Youtube, and I know it won't be as great as I remember it to be, but God dammit, I don't care! I know I'll still enjoy it! "Wolfman's got nards!" "My name is Horace!" "Why does the Wolfman wear pants?" "So you don't see his wolf dork."

Sweet sassy molassey we are.

20th Anniversary? I'm now feeling so very, very old.
It does hold up, pretty well. It's not a perfect film but it's still pretty damn fun.

When the Wolfman meets his demise I remember being all kinds of fucked up when I was a kid.

Awesome, glad to see a forgotten classic being given a new life on dvd...

I'm thrilled as hell. Own a vhs copy (and dvd bootleg of questionable quality). It does still hold up... the Stan Winston designs are a lot of fun and the score is great. Sure it's from the Goonies mold (with an homage or 2 within), but I vividly remember my theater experience for this one and will own this sucker when it hits the streets. MS punches Sommer's Van Helsing squarely in the wolf-dork.

And for the record, Killer Klowns From Outer Space rocks. I can't sit idly by while the name of Chiodo is blasphemed. I just. Can't.

That's Gopher from the Love Boat!

It punches Van Helsing in the nards!

Good. Yes. Think "Ghostbusters" with the Universal monsters on board.

Excellent news!

Now, if only we can get Night of the Creeps my life will be complete.

Yeah, c'mon, Lionsgate! I'm actually shocked Anchor Bay lost the chance. There should have been atleast 3 dvd releases of Monster Squad by now.
I remember loving this movie when i was little, and I would rewind to the beginning of the credits over and over to dance to the Monster Squad song.
It's not bad, but it's one of those movies whose reputation precedes it. I thought it was okay when I first saw it, but that was a long time ago.

The bit with the kid pumping the shotgun while saying "My name...is HORACE!" is awesome though.

Oh hell, I completely forgot about that rap. I actually used to know all of the words to it... also the "Dragnet" rap. What was up with that particular '80s movie trend?
Rap was the new thing back in the 80s, so I guess it was trying to hip to the times. Despite how incredibly lame it was done.

lots of movies feature rap songs about the movie itself. My favorite being Bobby Brown's Ghostbusters 2 effort entitled On Our Own. I also enjoyed TURTLE POWER on the original turtles soundtrack not to be confused with the sluggish ninja rap which I felt could have used a little more baking time in the oven.
It's not from a movie, but lest us not forget the greatest of all cheesy rap theme songs

'Hangin with the plumbers, you'll be hooked on the brothers.. UNH!'

Watching episodes of this show for the first time in like 8 years.. I shocked myself to more or less remember every damn word in that song.. I do love that Bobby Brown song too though.. I think both Ghostbusters' have great soundtracks.
I haven't seen the Monser Squad since it was on HBO or something back in the day. I'm looking forward to it, but peparing myself that my memories may be better than the flick itself. But the plot was pretty cool, you just can't go wrong with kids battling some great monsters. I really liked that "creature from the black lagoon"-ish monster the Gill Man.

Jason Hervey was funny back in the day.

Wait, what? You just compared "Monster Squad" to "Ghostbusters". I am at a loss for words.

Forget it, Mattoli. It's Zod.

I have a pretty decent bootleg of this on DVD. I was told it was copied from a laser disc version. But the quality is surprisingly good.

One of my favorite little scenes is when Shawn is sitting on his roof top, watching the horror movie playing at the drive-in through binoculars, as the sound plays on his transistor radio. His dad (who had promised to take him to the movie but couldn't because of work) comes up and joins him and brings him something from Burger King. The shot of the cars in the field as the drive-in movie plays out is awesome.

Just one of those small things you remember from an old movie.

Thanks for beating me to the punch on that one.

As for Monster Sqaud, I'm glad that it ain't bare-bones as I already own a decent anamorphic bootleg of said movie.

And the art!

Not too shabby.

Exciting news in my book! Bring on Night of the Creeps the same day, Anchor Bay! You know you wanna...
Looks like they're trying to invoke a little bit of Goonies.
And boy does Alucard look menacing.

It hit its apex in this 80s crime drama.

I was too old to have my pineal gland stroked by The Monster Squad, but the DVD is done by Michael Felsher, who did the recent Texas Chain Saw Massacre Ultimate Edition and TCM2 DVDs, so it'll probably be pretty thorough for you fans.

I definitely dig it for its own sake, but it seems like it's attached to the wrong movie. This thing needs to have a more "illustrated" look appropriate for its time. Like, buy this thing and you're getting yourself some funny, colorful monster adventures with a Michael Sembello song. It looks more like, buy this thing and you're getting a VAN HELSING knock-off.

Holy shit. After closer inspection, he's making a Charles Nelson Reilly smug smirk. That's just silly.

The wolfman gets kicked you-know-where July 24th.

Incidentally, I found this (below) T-Shirt here and here.

This is pretty great news.

I realized recently that my wife hadn't seen Monster Squad or Flash Gordon, and I lamented no Monster Squad on DVD. I am saved!

I liked that better than the movie.
Poor Horace. I had no idea he died.

Bought my copy today. Saddened to find out Fat Kid is dead!!! Poor Fat Kid. DAMN YOU PNEMONIA!!!
Yeah, I watched both commentaries and all the special features yesterday.

It still holds up dammit! I didn't realize there was strife on set with Hyams, or that Frankenstein and Dracula were always in character on set and around the kids. That Noonan is a weird dude.

Poor Fred Dekker. He deserves another shot... in spite of Robocop 3.

Ryan Lambert (Rudy) is like the little brother of Adrian Zmed and Scott Baio (if those 2 were actually brothers as well) and quite the singer as seen on the embarrassing Kids Incorporated. The heart of rock & roll IS still beatin, Ryan.

When I opened up the case and saw the original poster staring out at me, I felt a wave of happiness rush over me.

I love this movie so much it's not even funny.
