Monster Squad Finally Comes to DVD - Page 2

Give me the amulet, you BITCH!

I think the fact that it's not afraid to be a little adult in humor (juvenile version of "adult"), violent, and scary in parts is why it still holds up for me as more than a kid's flick. I loved the shit outta Goonies growing up, but MS is not nearly as screechy in hindsight.

And I still love those alternate designs of the Universal monsters. I'm glad Universal turned Dekker down as we got these different (yet familiar) takes on the classic characters. Too bad Universal didn't know how to make their own cult classic (or better yet, a successful franchise) with their monster mash, Van Helsing. I can't figure out why Columbia-TriStar didn't distribute their own flick on dvd though (rights issue?). But, it's been a long time coming and I'm glad to put my laser disc transfer bootleg to rest. Lions Gate did a nice job here (I wish Jon Gries got an interview though).

This is the kind of flick I would love to make. I saw it just at the right age (11) and I wanted my own Monster Club immediately. The score is definitely one of my faves as well.

Sorry, haters.

"I'm in the goddamn club, aren't I?"

F**kin A, Rudy.

I just saw the movie again for the first time in... shit, 10 years almost.

It's aged VERY well.

Not OMFG "well", but it's still a pretty solid flick, for what it is.

I was surprised at how good the acting was, for the most part, too. The guy who did Wolfman had chops, and Dracula was aces.

I can't find it in my little heart to say anything bad about this film.

And seeing it again, now, at almost-23, I can actually appreciate it's nuances and details ("Looks like you know alot about monsters!" "Yes, you could say I do...") more than before. SO glad that I still found loads to love even after seeing it through more mature eyes.

Also, like I said above, having the original poster reprinted even if just as a little flyer inside the disc made me all kinds of happy.

Forgot Shane Black wrote this. Too bad he isn't on the commentary.

AC Slater is also in that clip. Listed as dancer.

Really be looking forward to the review as it does hold up after not seeing it in forever. Surprising that it got away with the language for a pg 13 movie. I guess it was good for the movie that nobody considered fag wrong to use.

Liam Neeson as Dracula would be weird now.

I forgot that bit of trivia from the dvd. That's right!

Still would be interesting casting though.

This dvd is pretty scarce, I got the last copy over at Circuit City. It was a blind buy for me, but after hearing about it over the years, I just had to pick it up. Now, the inevitable question: where's Night Of The Creeps?!
Holy crap, it's got a #9 ranking in DVD sales at Amazon.com!
I want my Night of the Creeps as well!

And I'm glad it's selling well. Hold off releasing a cult classic long enough and people eat that shit up. I just wish they weren't so hesitant. Anyone know why this has taken so long?

And why the Dustin Diamond deleted scene didn't make it into the special features?

Also, supposedly there's a Limited Edition Score CD coming soon! Excellent.

Indeed there is. I mentioned it in the film score thread.

I must say as a confessed fan of both The Goonies and Shane Black's oeuvre, I'm embarassed that I have never seen this. Have I missed out on a lost classic, or is it nostalgia talking again?

It actually holds up quite well, probably because it's much less cutesy than most other things for which people of our generation are nostalgic. It's actually pretty dark.

I've got the DVD at home and am just itching to watch it.

It's got some nice shots, too.

I love the wide shot of Dracula talking to a sedated Woldman (tied to a chair) and the tracking shot behind Rudy as he circles Dracula's vamp concubines.

I've said it before, but I didn't grow up with the movie and only just watched it when I was 18 years old. I loved it. Winston's gillman is worth the price of the dvd alone.
I love the scene where the Gillman just appears out of the water with the Monster's casket. I knew nothing of the movie, so when he appeared, I was surprised. I only knew of Dracula, The Wolfman, and The Monster being in the movie.

I was lucky that my wal-mart(yeah I know) got it because my local blockbuster did not, and it was very fairly priced. When I first bought it I had a little regret wondering if it would be as good as I remembered it when I was ten, I had not seen ti since then. So I popped it in and yup I had so musch fun watching it. The featurette was great, from what I noticed Tom Noonan is a dick. The guys great but he had bad things to say about everyone. The commentary with the cast and Fred Dekker was really good too. Nice mix of Technical information and humor. I haven't listened to the other commentary yet but LionsGate really did a great job here.

It's a little redundant in spots compared to the info you get in the cast commentary, but it's still fine. You definitely get a bit more resentment (and damage control from the DP) over Peter Hyams' meddling in the 2nd one though.
