Ohio Chewers

I searched all over for a thread of Ohioans on the board here but couldn't come up with anything. I was just wondering how many others there are. I live in a tiny town about 40 minutes northeast of Columbus.
15-20 min east from Cleveland.
Suburbs of Akron/Canton, about five-ten minutes from the Akron Canton Airport and about an hour south of Cleveland.

It is snowing like a motherfucker determined to prove Albert Gore right today. Jesus H. Christ.
How much snow you guys got down there, Rath? The news is making it sound like the end of the fucking world is coming for that area.
I started an Ohio thread a long time ago, apparently it has vanished. I live in downtown Akron.

Right now, I have about 12 inches in front of my house (wow, that sounds gay) and it's still snowing like crazy. We are supposed to get about 12 more before it's done - so this is gonna be a doozy of a storm.
A-K rowdy, rowdy, southside Summit County.

Wehman pretty much sums it up. There was maybe six inches of snow when I got up at noon and it just hasn't stopped since then. What's weird is that I hear some parts -- I'm south of Akron -- are not getting it bad at all, like downtown Akron, and certain places are just getting the shit pounded out of them.
My girlfriend is in Niles, and even they're getting pretty hammered. They're saying this is the biggest snowstorm since the "Big `Un of 78"- I think they're full of shit... then again, I have no AMS seal to back me up, unlike Mr. Dick Goddard, keeper of the woolybears.

I'm about 1 1/2 hours south of Akron and we have about 8 inches. It is pretty much all over too.

Dabaker, your definition of Utica as hicktown is spot-on. I have a running joke that Ohio's motto should be "Founded by the people the East Coast and South kicked out."
That would be a perfect state motto.

Or as a friend of mine says, "The only red state with all the conservatism and none of the money!"
Strongsville, but closer to Columbia Station. When my father took to snow blower to our driveway a a couple hours ago, there was about a foot os snow on the ground.

The scary thing Rath is that you are completely right. I work in Columbus so I go back and forth between extremes. I work will all kinds of people who think they are the East Coast types and in Utica I know people who think they are from the south that fly the Confederate flag all over the place and try to talk like they are Southerners.
I grew up in Mogadore, which, along from being pretty much the town from 'Varsity Blues', took it as a point of pride that there were a couple of former Klan Wizards or whatever the fuck they're called living in town. Apparently the Klan was huge there, and given some of the experiences I had, that wouldn't surprise me. Also, when I worked at the McDonald's in town, every Saturday, there would be a group of old guys who would come in, order the cheapest coffee on the menu, and sit in the corner talking about last night's football game and how the Jews were taking over the world for HOURS.

Shaver, my job frequently works with the Strongsville School District.

Also, almost 17 goddamn inches of snow on the ground this morning. Freezing rain last night. Apparently Akron's getting/got POUNDED.
Dude talk about shitty hick town, I was born in Harpster. My freakin neighbors were ahmish. I live in Marion and Cbus now. And it freakin snowing AGAIN !!!!
I live 45 minutes north of Cincinnati.

I always thought Utica was a small town Sherm, but I think Harpster has us beat. I used to work in a little restaurant in town that all the farmers would eat at and at any given time you could here them talking about 10 or 15 different ignorant subjects like different religions and races. They always loved whining about anyone from a different country. The tolerance of small town folk has always blown my mind.
I was born in Cleveland but my parents moved to Strongsville in January '95. I have some fond memories of Cleveland; my aunt beating up a pregnant woman, nearly being run over on the same day my little sister was born, the three times I was nearly abducted (actually the first and third times I'm not sure but the second time I'm positive I was close to being abducted).

Rath, what do you do for a living?
I'm an outdoor education instructor. Every year, the entire Strongsville school district sends every single sixth grade class in every elementary school out to my camp (I can't tell you the name because I'm supposed to have a 'positive' online presence, hence the pen name for my THUD columns, but you can probably guess by my location) for two-and-a-half days over the course of four weeks.

It's a fantastic job, I love it, but it's not a field with a lot of advancement, the hours are long, and the pay sucks.
I actually did that. I was in sixth grade when I moved. I ended up getting really sick the second day there. My principal ended up driving me home.

I remember one of the instructors there looked like David Koresh (sp?).
I live in Cincinnati. Not technically in the city, but just inside the belt freeway, so I have a Cincy address.

I grew up in the Medina/Lodi/Seville triangle, so all of this Strongsville/Akron talk is bringing back the memories.

We actually had it worse (snow-wise) last week getting about 7+ inches. This week, we just got iced over. Less precipitation, but lots of ice.

I didn't drive at all this week until today... except for last night... but that was to get a new video game... so it was important and stuff.
I'm from Euclid and I'm about I guess 20-30 min. or so from downtown Cleveland.
Man, I'm right off the border of Euclid/Richmond Hts.
Snowing like a motherfucker to beat the band...again.
Just wanted to throw my hat into the ring of Ohio Chewers, specifically of the southern variety.
Northern Ohio folks (I cannot believe I just typed that) make fun of you southern Ohio folks all the time, especially those from the Ohio River Valley. There's quite an argument about what constitutes "being from Ohio," -- i.e., if you're less than two hours from the West Virginia border, you might just go ahead and call yourself a hillbilly from the South.

(I, personally, do not believe this, insisting that I'm from New York because I've spent more time in that state than this one, but just sayin' what they say.)
I've lived in Ohio my entire life, so yeah, I'm well-versed in being looked down upon by northern Ohioans. It's all in good fun though, because I then get to point out things like Cleveland being the "Mistake on the Lake". And don't even get me started on Youngstown.

In all seriousness though, I love Ohio, and the drastic difference between Ohio north of I-70 and Ohio south of I-70 is just one of the interesting characteristics of the state.
I have been to Youngstown once, and it was a pit. Outer Columbus is gorgeous, though, and so is Granville. I hear Yellow Springs and the area around Ohio University are great, too.

But yeah, Cleveland/Akron/Canton. Fuck those burgs. Actually, I'll give Cleveland a pass for its arts and theatre districts, everything else can go blow itself on a flaming river.

Cleveland 44111 represent.

The town of Granville is a nice looking place. The problem lies in the fact that everyone who lives in the town is either a complete moron or a stuck up bitch. An interesting piece of local knowledge is that Utica and Granville have hated each other for years. Back in the early 1800's the town's militias actually had a battle somewhere between the two towns. If I remember correctly no one actually got hurt or anything and I don't even know what it was about.

Man, I hate Ohio weather. Raining and probably in the high forties today.

I heard a statistic that apparently Ohio is second only to Seattle in the ratio of sunny days to cloudy/rainy days. Anyone else heard this?
There's a nice fog outside.

No, but I've heard the saying that "if you don't like the weather, wait ten minutes and it will change" when it comes to Ohio weather.
The weather sucks but at least the snow has started to melt. But then again there could be another fucking blizzard next week.
North Olmsted here, about 20 minutes outside Cleveland.

Columbus. Born and raised.

LOL. Well, I'm 5 minutes from Belpre, OH... in WV.

Anyone with a pretty mouth want to meet up?

There's a line in yesterday's THUD News Roundup I wrote just for my homeboys in this thread.

I saw that- I love Dick Goddard references.

This is for the Northern Ohio based Chewers. Some of you may know that I do stand-up comedy (I'll let you all know when I am in a show next, so you can come heckle - I can't do this show, as I am helping organize) on the side. I am also now working with a few people to bring a comedy festival to Cleveland. It is our first year, and it's been tough - but I really think we can put together a show that in a few years can hang with Boston, NY, or Vegas (maybe not Aspen). Anyway..

We are having a fundraising show (to help with costs on setting up the festival) on March 12th, that I wanted to let you all know about. I will probably be there (my baby is due right around there, so I might not be able to make it), but even if I'm not (and you are looking for some laughs), I encourage you to come check out the show.

If you want tickets, just PM me and I'll arrange to get you the tickets and your payment.

From our press release:

Help support the Cleveland Comedy Festival and enjoy an evening of laughs and good times.

I've been living in Columbus since coming to school here back in '80.

hey everyone

I have two questions for you northeast Ohio Chewer Fellows.

1) are you going to the Cleveland Film Fest this month? do you want to hook up? by "hook up", i of course mean to "hang out", but if awkward/exciting/excitingly awkward romance occurs, so be it.

2) if you live anywhere near Akron, would you be interested in being part of a film club i'm trying to put together? it's only in the planning stages right now, but i seem to be getting closer to being able to do it at a pretty cool bar here in akron...it would probably be once a week. i'm supposed to meet with the owner in the next week or so. I'm looking for suggestions, so let me know. my email is froggybusiness@gmail.com

ok!

also, my band Houseguest is playing in akron on St. Patrick's Day, email for details and i will buy you a drink, green or otherwise.

1. The Cleveland film festival looks awesome, as always, but I lack the cash and transportation to attend such a event.

2. Maybe. Again, I lack the transportation to attend such an event.

3. Is your band named after the Sinbad flick of the same name?
Cleveland is a six hour drive for me so there is no way I can go right now. To those going please keep us posted on how things go.

Do you mean 6 hours roundtrip?

I (shamefully) wasn't even aware of the film festival. I might actually be up in NE Ohio the first weekend, but it is primarily for family visiting, so I don't know if I'd have time to see anything... but I'll have to see what is planning and if I can clear some time!

Yes, it is named after the Sinbad movie. My first vote was for First Kid, but everyone decided that was a dumb band name. Thus Houseguest.

Anyways, i too lack the cash i wish i had to see all the movies i would like to see, but March 24th looks pretty awesome. They have three filmmaking workshops in a row...i don't know if you have to pay for them or not. The first is a ninety minute discussion about the importance of local filmmaking, and i think one of the other two is about using budget constraints. The third i completely forget about.

After that there are three blocks of movies leading up to the midnight showing of David Wain's The Ten which i am very excited about.

If driving non-stop I could get to the festival in 4 hours. I always add an hour or two as a precaution because I tend to stop several times on a trip like that to eat, rest stops, construction, etc.
