Ahhhhh! That makes more sense... I was pretty sure that it was unlikely that you could pick two points in Ohio that were more than 5 hours apart.

I also always think in terms of non-stop driving because I never stop, unless I'm driving more than 6 or 7 hours. Vroom, vroom! I make trips to see my family in Medina (not too far south of Cleveland) from Cincinnati and I've made it under 3 hours before, although it usually takes a little more than 3 hours.

Construction has gotten alot better on 71 of late. I remember how in recent years it seemed like you went through 8+ construction zones between Cincy and Cleveland, now it is down to just 2 or 3 (at least it was around Christmas time).

How the hell did I miss this? I'm from Hamilton! (which some of you may know as Hamil-tucky), but when I tell anyone that I get blank stares, so I just say Cincinnati.

2) if you live anywhere near Akron, would you be interested in being part of a film club i'm trying to put together? it's only in the planning stages right now, but i seem to be getting closer to being able to do it at a pretty cool bar here in akron...it would probably be once a week. i'm supposed to meet with the owner in the next week or so. I'm looking for suggestions, so let me know. my email is froggybusiness@gmail.com
1. Having just brought life into this world, I'm pretty busy right now (BTW, for you Ohio folks - Akron General is where she was born).

2. I'd be up for a film appreciation type thing, but once a week seems like a lot. Having setup events like this in the past, I'd recommend maybe once a month. It not only allows the event to be more anticipated, it should keep attendance both regular and higher.

Oh, Akron General. The memories.

(I, personally, do not believe this, insisting that I'm from New York because I've spent more time in that state than this one, but just sayin' what they say.)
That is so true. There really isn't a difference between WV people and Southern Ohio people. I'm from a tiny (6,000 people) town in Jackson County, but now reside in Columbus.

My greater Northeastern Ohio homies, how fucking great is this weather we've been having?
It's funny- its 73 degrees right now at 10 pm, and its not even April yet. I remember playing baseball in the middle of April maybe 13 or 14 years ago and having games get snowed out. Maybe Gore was on to something.

Regardless, I fucking love it. Now we just need some leaves on the trees...
I think we broke 80 today down in Southwestern Ohio and set a record for this time of year.

Love it. I love taking a walk outside in this weather.
72 degrees at 2 in the morning. I had to open three windows in my apartment to cool down. Man.
yea today was nice, I just wore a tshirt to work, and the girls next door had on pretty dresses. Too bad this is ohio and I am sure the sleet and hail is coming soon. LOL.
The weather is beutiful today, I think I'm gonna go for a walk in a bit.
It's 77 right now and just enough breeze to make for a beautiful day.

Speaking of Ohio, festivals are just around the corner and here is the list for April

Damn, these little "State X Chewers" threads usually fizzle after less than a dozen posts. There are a lot of Ohio Chewers here. Good shit.

Sadly, for your sake, most of you are from northern Ohio. Hehehehe, couldn't help myself.

In seriousness too, how great has it been to be an Ohio sports fan this year? I go to Ohio State, #1 in football until that game which shall not be uttered, #1 in basketball (fingers crossed). The Bengals have become not a total embarassment (I'm a child of the 90s aka The Dark Years). Hell, Wright State made the NCAA tournament.

All we need now is for the Reds to get their act together.

I keep hoping. Every year, like last year especially, they seem to be going strong, then they go on some crazy dozen game losing streak. It doesn't help that Griffey Jr., God love him, is possibly the most injury-prone superstar in all of baseball. The guy could slip in the shower and be out a third of the season. I adore the Great American Ballpark though, fantastic place to watch a game. I had quite an attachment to Riverfront (I refuse to acknowledge the name change to the godawful Cinerg Field), but its a hole compared to where they are now.
Despite Bill Simmons' rules on being a sports fan, I don't really root for any Ohio teams. I'm a Nationals/Red Sox guy when it comes to baseball, but I love going to see the Akron Aeroes play. Football, I really couldn't care less about, but I had a teacher in high school who was obsessed with Ohio State -- he even showed us a Woody Hayes documentary for class one time as part of a lesson on "great figures in leadership" -- and I have several close friends who go there.

As for basketball, Wehman will probably back me up on this, but living in Akron in the age of King James has been all kinds of annoying. Plus, I went to a high school in the same high school league as the guy (he went to St. V's, I went to Walsh Jesuit), so I got to hear all kinds of Lebron stories from people who played opposite him. I hate how Akron, home of the Pretenders, Devo, and the Rubber City, will now forever be known as "the hometown of LeBron James."

Although I refuse to call the old Gund Arena "the Q." I saw Springsteen there, man. Come on!

Eileen, thanks for posting that link. I'm always bitching about how there's nothing to do around here for a long-haired artsy-fartsy liberal folkie (despite being 15 minutes from Blossom) like myself, but some of those events look pretty cool.
I'm with you, I refuse to acknowledge "The Q" instead of the fitting "Gund Arena".

Though I have to disagree slightly on the Lebron thing. Granted, I don't live in Akron, but I think for a guy like him to basically choose to stay in Ohio, right in his backyard of Cleveland, when he could easily go wherever he wants for whatever amount of money, is good for the game of basketball, and very cool for Ohio. You just don't get that kind of loyalty much anymore in sports.
My annoyance is more with the city of Akron than LeBron himself. I have to admit I've come to grudgingly respect the guy for staying in Cleveland, for some of the things he's been doing for the community, and some of the things he's got planned. It's just hard for me to reconcile "LeBron in high school" with "LeBron now." I've actually heard he's a much nicer guy these days than he was back when my buddies were playing him in high school.
As far as sports go, I'm a Cleveland fan all the way. My first and foremost love is the Browns (it's be a hard ten years), but no matter how much they suck - I still root. I'll take OSU football next, then basketball and baseball. Much like Rath, I do enjoy going to the Aeros games. I live five minutes (drive) from the stadium, so I try and go a few times a summer - it's a great deal.

As far as the LeBron things go, I enjoy having him here. I wasn't living in Akron during the HS years (I lived in Columbus for seven years, then Chicago, then Pittsburgh before I moved back home - I lived in Akron till I graduated HS in 1992 then went to college at Otterbein - outside Columbus - then moved back) so I didn't know about all the hype. I just love having a player who is considered to be one of the best in the game on a team I root for. It doesn't happen a lot around here. It's quite apparent LeBron is quite full of himself (and the recent fascination of being a global icon and the Warren Buffet shit just annoys the hell outta me), but I think it comes with the territory. Plus, if anyone is going to bring champion to C-Town - it will be him. Ohh, and I'm a "Q" guy. It's just easier to say. Not to mention I work in Cleveland, so I'm used to people referring to it.
I'm a baseball fan, but I think the time and money it takes to see a pro game in the stadium is just too stressful/expensive. A minor league game is 10 bucks, you can usually get good seats with a good view of the action. Throw in a beer or two, you have a nice, peaceful evening out for under thirty bucks.

Even as a non-baseball fan it's a fun time. I usually hit one of the bars before hand (usually Brubakers) have a couple of beers, walk down - there really isn't a bad seat. Or, I can take my 8-year old son and we acn watch a game up close. Just a cool time.
I don't normally go to bars in Ak-Rowdy, because they're too small for the amount of college kids that occupy them, but last year after an Aeros game, a bunch of my friends and I went to Jillians and then to the country-western bar down the block. I was so intoxicated by the time we got to the cw place that I got talked into riding the mechanical bull. It was AWESOME.

Also, I saw on the lunchtime news that the feds are coming to town to investigate the shooting of that kid by the cops a few weeks back. Weeellllllllll, we got trouble, my friends, right here in River City...

Hey, NE Ohio Chewers, Valentino Achak Deng, the subject of Dave Eggers' new novel 'What is the What' will be at the Akron-Summit County Public Library on April 11th.

Not sure if the grocery store Krogers is in other states except Ohio so I'll just post this in here. If you have their savings card they have a great deal on TV DVD's - buy one get one free.

The only shows I saw were (all complete first seasons): All in The Family, Sanford & Son, Barney Miller, One Tree Hill, What's Happening, Good Times, and Ellen.

Absolutely. I think momentum has to be on our side for yet another Florida matchup. We're on a roll, this has been a great year to be a Buckeye.

Lets hope so. It was great seeing OSU win yesterday (and big Cav's win as well)! FLA is a great team, but I am holding onto hope.

I swear to Akron's Patron Saint Bill W., if it goddamn snows for the next two weeks, I'm going to punch Dick Goddard in his wooly-bear lovin' face.
Just saw the forecast on The Weather Channel. Old Man Winter, you're a cock.

Is it just me or is winter the only season that sticks around longer than it should?

Edit: Rath, be careful. You might kill him.

First off, it does look like it's going to snow again but second...

Dick Goddard cannot do a weather forecast anymore. He literally speaks gibberish and I have no idea what he is talking about.

I haven't watched him in a long time, but with the baby I find myself watching a lot more TV lately and WOW.. is he just awful.
So everybody's heard the old joke that you know you're from Ohio when you can name the 4 seasons as almost winter, winter, still winter, and construction, right?
Yeah.

Also, I was looking up crime rates and the like on Wikipedia recently and I did not know that Cleveland is the poorest city in America. We're number 1!
So Ohio State lost, but it was a pretty good game. Florida is just so tough, it wasn't the same kick to the crotch that the football championship was.

And yeah, today was pure Ohio. Yesterday I wore shorts to class and was still sweating my ass off. Today I needed a winter coat. Ah, Ohio.
Not to retread on an old subject - but this weather is total crap. I've got nothing more to offer, other than I am really, really annoyed by the snow right now.
Another useless weather rant:

I went to the 4:00 showing of Grindhouse and I didn't notice until I was driving down my street that it was 7:40 and it was still light outside but there was snow on the ground. I was thinking that it was earlier in the day. The snow is throwing my shit off.

I'm with you Brian and this is just plain nuts. One day it was 77 and within 24 hours the temps dropped down to the 30's!!!

I was so happy to have the furnace off and looking forward to low gas bills but hell no, another cold spell that will last another two weeks so hello $180 gas bill and goodbye lawn goodies I was saving up for.
Did any of you read about that 84 year old woman from Shelby county who was kidnapped, raped, stuffed in the trunk of a car and was found dead Friday?

They caught the guy who did it (he was in his 30's) and never did it cross my mind that he would rape/kill her. When I had heard about her kidnapping Thursday I assumed someone just wanted to get their hands on her pension/social security money as it is the time of month for the elderly to get money.
Cold, snowy, and windy. The kind of weather that really makes me want to take the job I got offered out in California. Fuck this shit.
Builds character, although the snow was quite a shock. I could fathom the wind and temperature drop, but hell, I drove home through a blizzard last night after seeing "Grindhouse". It's April.
I had to drive up to Richmond Mall to see Grindhouse last night because the theater close to me wasn't showing it. It was bitch, I could barley see where I was going.

No, but that is quite disturbing. There are some messed up people in the world.

<in rumbling Chuck Heston Voice>

"Damn you, Global Warming....damn you to Hell!"

I knew we would pay for those weeks back in January when it was seventy freakin' degrees. And I bet we get flurries in May. They should discount season passes at the pool......it won't be warm enough to swim until July.
I don't know why, and of course this could happen anywhere, but this story made me laugh.

Quote:
AKRON -- A local pizza franchise known for its catch phrase "Pizza! Pizza!" now has workers saying "Robber! Robber!"
"Right before they closed, about eleven o'clock, a guy come in with all dark clothing on and a grim reaper mask," says Lt. Rick Edwards of the Akron Police Department. "He walked into the counter, produced a knife, and told the employee to fill up his wallet. He got money and out the door he went."

"It's pretty crazy, people coming in her with masks out of nowhere," says Ken Harper, an employee. "It's something really unusual. It's not Halloween."

"In April, basically unheard of," adds Edwards. "Somebody coming in with a Halloween costume and robbing a business."

The man made off with a small amount of money and, today, has left employees talking about their "brush with death."

"Outrageous," says Harper. "How you gonna walk in off the street with a mask on."

Akron police have a limited description of the robber. They say there hasn't been any similar robberies recently.

One of the few good things about Northeastern Ohio: The Great Lakes Brewing Company.

I was just there two weeks ago, and must completely agree. Food prices were a bit much, but the beer was fantastic. The Oatmeal stout I had was unbelieveable.
