Metallica - The Ecstacy of Gold

Came across the full thing on YouTube. Thoughts?

The song doesn't work as well without the vocal arrangements of the original (and no Hetfield(sp)'s "heeyy-yeay" thing in the middle does not help), and the drumming is too poundy for the rest of the song.

Other than that, it's okay.

Lars ruins it with his seriously terrible, clunky and ill thought out drums parts once again. He is seriously terrible at his instrument and every Metallica song since Load could've been a better song with a different drummer.

That being said, it sounds OK, but they've hijacked this song for almost 20 years. Time to give it back and pick a new song.

Newsflash: Metallica$h has sucked since the Black Album.

Special exclusive comment: The followup to St. Anger will be a "reinvented" Metallica$h.....meaning more marketable and will suck just as bad,

Ending your post on a comma like that has left me hanging.... what will be your next witty, pithy comments be?!!?!

It's a decent cover, but the drums are really off.

Lars' drumming bothers me less than the fact that pre-Load Metallica could've made this cover fucking epic, instead of sounding like they found it lying in Hetfield's trash compactor under a half eaten turkey sandwich from 1983.

The cover of this song they did for S&M is much better (but having a symphony back you up helps a lot).

That you're a jerk and you probably smell like soy milk?

I got nothing. C'mon, just call me Giant Baba and ignore me like usual. You know you want to.

You know you want to, Devin$h. New Metallica is the equivalent of running zombies. They rape the memory of the originals.

It's alright. Not a fan of the hey-yeahs or the drumming either (what happened to Lars?) but they've been obsessed with this song for years. I'm interested in hearing the rest of that Ennio Morricone tribute album, though.

Wait I had no idea that Metallica's music was on the decline since 1991, it's like finding out a Taiwanese hooker is actually a man.

Lars got a lot of shit for his drumming on St. Anger, but the guitars were actually worse now that I hear it again. This, my friends, is the greatest tragedy of all. It's all attributed to guitar tone. And their tone absolutely sucks now. Maybe they are as good as they were pre-Black, but they've sucked the life out of their guitars. Pre-Load era, even through the black album, their tone sounded epic. Now, it just sounds like some teenagers in a fucking basement plugging in their shitty Squire Strat with their 10 watt amp.

Man, people get so angry about this band, whatever they do.
The drums aren't that terrible, if anyone thought they should be better, they're giving Lars too much credit to begin with. Juan is totally on about the guitar tone, man they sound like shit. I'm hoping this is some sort of pre-production. What makes me very happy from the pictures in the you-tube clip? Rick Rubin sitting on the couch with the fellas....

It's not so much anger, but disappointment in a band I long admired. I'm just stating where I think they fell of the cliff.

I'm glad Rubin is on, but if he can't get them to tune their guitars back to standard, then it's all for null.

Lars' drums aren't as bad as St. Anger but just barely, they at least don't sound like trash cans. As for Rubin, I just don't think he salvage anything from this band at this point.

I found the tracklisting for the tribute album. It has Celine Dion but it also has Herbie Hancock so I'm conflicted. And why the hell isn't The Man with the Harmonica on it.

1. I Knew I Loved You - Celine Dion
2. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - Quincy Jones featuring Herbie Hancock
3. Once Upon a Time in the West - Bruce Springsteen
4. Conradiana - Andrea Bocelli
5. The Ecstasy of Gold - Metallica
6. Malèna - Yo-Yo Ma
7. Come Sail Away - Renée Fleming
8. Gabriel's Oboe - Ennio Morricone
9. Conmigo - Daniela Mercury featuring Eumir Deodato
10. La Luz Prodigiosa - Dulce Pontes
11. Love Affair - Chris Botti
12. Je Changerais d'Avis - Vanessa and The O's
13. Lost Boys Calling - Roger Waters
14. The Tropical Variation - Ennio Morricone
15. Could Heaven - Denyce Graves
16. Addio Monti - Taro Hakase
17. Cinema Paradiso - Ennio Morricone

By they way, anyone else with a musical ear in here notice that the lead guitar was a little out of tune? What the hell is up with that?

The wah fixes everything Chris. Kirk thinks so, anyway.

Or anything from the Untouchables score.
