Wow, I can't believe they finally did a "good" version of this DVD. I wonder if this means that the Fletch movie is moving forward. Anyway, here's the specs from DavisDVD.com:

Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release Fletch: The Jane Doe Edition on May 1st. Comedian Chevy Chase stars as Fletch, everyone's favorite undercover reporter in the popular movie based on the award-winning novel by Gregory McDonald. The DVD arrives with a digitally remastered 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 tracks. Bonus materials include "Just Charge It to the Underhills: Making and Remembering Fletch" and "From John Cocktoaston To Harry S. Truman: The Disguises" featurettes, a "Favorite Fletch Moments" feature and the original trailer. Packaged in a lenticular slipcover, retail will be $19.98.

This will be MINE. This does deserve the better transfer and features, so I'll accept the double dip from the bare-bones dvd.

In college, we'd get really drunk and put this movie on (along with 'Caddyshack', 'Stripes', and 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail') and yell lines at the screen. Fond memories. When ever we get into geeky movie-quote wars, I always fall back on this movie.

You can also see the cover art for the DVD in last week's Special Edition, where I talked about it.

Busted. I had forgot you picked up the SE mantle. How will you have time to prepare for FFL this year if you're writing this?

Shouldn't be a problem. Only two or three of you provide real competition anyway.

Apparently you missed the announcement that Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence will be filming Fletch Won with Zach Braff starring during the Scrubs hiatus.

It's a fucking retarded name for the dvd. I want to find the room of monkeys chained to type writers who turn out these horrible dvd titles for the studios and shoot them all in the head.

Braff is too meek and mild compared to Chase in this film. He reminds me of a young Woody Allen. Don't see Braff as brazen and holding Fletch's/Chase's 'I don't give a fuck' attitude towards everything.

I have the bare bones release, and I'm actually not that crazy over this one. I actually like Fletch Lives more. I'll pass on this re-release, but I'm looking forward to seeing this new one with Zach Braff.

I think Ryan Reynolds would make a much better Fletch. Or Jason Lee. But Zach Braff will have to do.

YES! Ryan Reynolds would be perfect.

Watched it last night. The picture is great. It's not perfect, but I noticed a lot of small details that I had missed with subsequent viewings on VHS and TV, particularly because the picture was a lot nicer.

The special features are ok...the "Charge it to the Underhills" extra is kind of different, which is what the guy said he set out to do. And there's a joke at the end of it where the guy tells his assistant, "You forgot to remind me to talk to Chevy!" A lack of Chevy, but conversations with M. Emmett Walsh, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Richard Libertini, Tim Matheson, and Larry Jenkins, and the screenwriter and producer and some other crew. The guy even asks Tim Matheson about the relation of "Fred Dorfman" being the same guy as Kent "Flounder" Dorfman's brother in "Animal House". Matheson laughed and essentially acknowledged that he thought it was intentional. It was a brief but enjoyable 26 minutes.

There are also references to deleted scenes, but because the tape was lost, there are just photographs. Apparently other flashback/dreams of Fletch, like a further sequence involving Kareem, the actual reason Fletch hates Tommy Lasorda (apparently Lasorda brings in Fletch to close a game, and the batter is 3 feet tall, so Fletch walks him, which leads to an argument with Lasorda), and some kind of hockey interaction.

The sound is improved, but still suffers from that move from a 2.0 to a 5.1 mix where the dialog is a bit muted, but then when action or music hits, it's really a bit overpowering.

It's worth $15 to me, but it would've been nice if Chevy would've participated in the interviews, or a commentary. Even a commentary by the screenwriter (the director has since died) or some of the actors they got for the interviews would've been nice.

I went to get this at Hastings along with Office and a Gentleman for my wife but they only had Officer and a blank spot where I guess this was at earlier in the day. Oh well, guess I'll have to brave Wal Mart or Best Buy to get it.

I can't wait to watch it again.

There were plenty of them when I went to Best Buy yesterday. The lenticular slip cover is fucking creepy.

People thinking of Chevy Chase as the definitive Fletch makes me laugh.

Well apparently now that Zach Braff has dropped out, the Weinsteins have decided to drop picture. Back to hell for you Fletch.
Good. I wanted Ryan Reynolds anyway.
