What do you guys think about granting phenomenal cosmic power to players?
I'll most likely play the game...being the glutton for punishment that I am when it comes to Star Wars.

However, I'm more interested in the novel. I have an unhealthy obsession with the EU novels.

I think it would be great for these types of games to have such a powerful player to the point where they can pull things out of low orbit. The problem is, where's the challenge come from? Having read the article in the March Game Informer, I was pleased to hear that some of the powers were given to you right at the start. From the way it sounds, the developers wanted to give you at least a certain amount of abilities that Jedi take for granted. Things like enhanced jumping, deflecting, etc. The ability to chain various force powers together, since each power (lightning, push, and pull) will be mapped to different buttons.

There was some actual concept footage a while ago that looked damn cool. It was all pre-rendered stuff, so there's that...

I am interested after having read the Game Informer article. They've got to be careful though, as having the main portion of gameplay consist of a complete joke while you wait for each Force-enabled opponent to pop-up would get fairly tiresome.

Also, why did the guy interviewed for GI keep referring to Darth Vader's presumed apprentice as a "Jedi"? Wouldn't he be a Sith?

Somewhat regrettably, I didn't play any of the earlier Star Wars Games other than X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and KOTOR I and II. I have a feeling I missed out on quite a few gems.
Overlord, short answer = no, it would be a "dark" Jedi, but a Jedi nonetheless.

There's a little bit more to becoming a Sith, even in the era of the Rule of Two. You have to be named in the Sith tradition and proclaimed a "Dark Lord of the Sith" and all that jazz.

Dark Jedi were used as pawns by the Emperor and Darth Vader for the entire duration of the Galactic Civil War, and Palpatine used many during the Clone Wars, as well.

Oh dear...well, it's out now. I know far too much.

Not really. You hit the gems pretty solidly.

I'm fairly sure that was sarcasm on his part.

Edit - I refer you to his avatar. Yes, I know that's stereotyping. Sue me.

The EU I sense in you Jared....and yes, there was some sarcasm in my earlier post.

Other than the Zahn/Thrawn trilogy, I haven't read too much of the EU. There just seemed to be too many novels to keep track of.

**I almost forgot the original arcade star wars game: that thing rocked.

Your shredding of galactic basic notwithstanding, I will take that as a compliment.

It makes me feel better if I take it as a compliment, in case anybody was wondering.

Why is Star Wars concept art always 100x better than actual Star Wars products?

You've played the best, but there are definitely some other SW gems out there, some even based on the godawful new films. The Rogue Squadron games on the Cube, the Jedi Knight fps games, the Lego Star Wars games, the Battlefront games, Republic Commando, and X-Wing Alliance, just to name a few.

Star Wars as a property is much better served by video games than by the recent films made by its creator...
I still defend MASTERS OF TERAS KASI, for Christ's sake.

And the Jedi Knight games are really good.

It's weird, whenever an SW game comes out, I want it. Pavlovian.

Episode 1 Racer!

Man, all listed out like that, there seems to be an awful large weight of goodness with the property, doesn't there?

I won't have anything bad said about Episode I Racer! It's a blast to play and filled with Watto goodness. Only drawback is the lack of multiplayer.

Lego Star Wars I & II (even though the latter is somewhat glitch-filled) are great fun. I'm playing around now with Battlefront II on my PC. I just like doing well enough to be able to switch to Luke, Vader, Grievous, Yoda, Windu, etc. And my son likes to watch me play, since it's a little too fast paced for him to play himself. But he loves to play Lego Star Wars. We have about 6-7 different Lego Star Wars sets that remain in various states of completeness and utter destruction that he plays with as well.

How could I forget SW Battlefront! I've played/beaten them both. Most of the rest, I haven't tried.

I'm a huge Battlefront 2 junkie. It just never gets old.

And I'm the only human alive who loved Rebellion. Seriously. Fuck you all for not loving it.

As a throwback, I enjoyed the SNES Super Star Wars series, even if they were some of the hardest games I've ever encountered.
I liked EMPIRE AT WAR. The big-ass Star Destroyers are a lot of fun.
My forgettable fave: Shadows of the Empire.

Fighting IG-88 on the junk planet was one of my favorite boss battles ever.

Back on topic: If done correctly, it would be something new, to have all those powers at your disposal. If done correctly: a big IF.
Oh hell yeah. The Hoth battle might just be my favorite SW gaming sequence. With those same controls, and today's graphics... I can only imagine.

......were they better, or worse, than Final Fantasy VII?
Having a hero with god-like powers isn't just a problem of game balance, unfortunately; it's also a question of drama and tension. Part of my problem with so many modern action films (I'm looking at you, Ultraviolet and Lara Croft) is that the hero is just too damn good. If the hero isn't remotely threatened by any of the antagonists, then the battles have no tension. It's just scenes of the hero beating up on people, which is less than exciting.

From a videogame perspective, there would certainly be a "Oh my god, this is so cool" rush from being able to do things on a massive scale, but that would recede pretty quickly. Without the possibility of being beaten, where do the thrills come from? Eventually, of course, you'd come up against another god-like character and duke it out, which would be spectacular. But there's a lot of space in the middle that has to be filled in.

FO course, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter is not to be forgotten as one of the better games. I was just replaying it last night and it's still a blast.

I was pretty into Rebellion for a while. After playing through a couple of campaigns, though, the endless-popup-windows interface really started to get to me. And it really would have been better as a turn-based game. The running clock really didn't make much sense. But its use of hero characters to head up certain tasks is something that I wish another game had picked up.
The only Star Wars games I could remotely stand were the X-Wing/Tie Fighter games and then the Rogue Squadron games. It breaks my heart that there isn't a next gen version of Rogue Squadron out, because the game looked damn spectacular on the Gamecube, I can't imagine how it would look playing through a 360 on a HDTV.
I couldn't really get into Rogue Squadron. It was fun, but it was basically just a rail shooter. I like a little more freedom of movement.

Rogue Squadron was a rail shooter? I always thought it was a console-ized, stripped down version of X:Wing.
Anyone ever play X-Wing Alliance? I always wanted to but had a crappy PC at the time. Apparently you could fly the Falcon at the Battle of Endor, which would have rocked, I feel sure.

Nah it was on-rails, it just did a lot to disguise the fact. If you flew around a lot you realised the levels were brutally enclosed. It was essentially Starfox with the Dark Side and GODDAMN FRIGATE PROTECTION MISSIONS.

Yeah, that's what I considered, with game fiction requiring conflict, and it's a challenge to write a conflict for a godlike being. I'd like to see someone fail spectacularly at trying to do so, though. Maybe I will.

edit: Oh man, I just unearthed my memories of the Rebel Assault games.

I remember liking that game, but the controls were really cumbersome. Trying to collect a bounty in the middle of a firefight was just too hard.

Yeah, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the campaign. You spend the entire game as this new character from a family of smugglers who eventually works his way into the Rebellion, then the last mission, BAM! You're Lando flying the Falcon. It's cool and all, but it doesn't make a lick of sense.
