Pegg on Humour: The UK vs The USA.

Interesting article by Simon Pegg regarding humour and irony on both sides of the Atlantic.

http://arts.guardian.co.uk/theatre/c...009754,00.html

Coming from New Zealand, where I think our sense of humour is a mix of both US and UK with a tendency towards the UK, this isn't something that I really think about too often...

I'd like to know if it matters to you, The CHUD.com reader, where your entertainment comes from? For me it doesn't matter one bit.

ps. this is the first thread I have posted.... don't be to harsh...

I read that a few days ago. Damn, not only do I love the guy as a comedian, but that's a fiercely intelligent, well put together thesis that. And I'm definitely glad to hear it coming from a Brit. It gives me hope!

Chewers in general are not prejudiced about entertainment matters; British comedy in particular gets quite a bit of love.

And if this is the worst thread you ever create on the site...welcome, friend.

Funny is funny no matter which accent is at play. Chewers have an eclectic palette for the most part and I'd reckon that very few would oppose something because of it's origin. And as said earlier, if this is your worst thread ever, then you sir are ahead of the game.

I think this thread would be more appropriate if it was a poll or a list of some sort...

Cheers for that. Terrific article.

I now love Simon Pegg even more than I did before.

I knew Pegg was a smart dude from his 'Shaun' commentary, I didn't know he was a good essayist as well. Great article.

Very interesting.

Although it is true that we British do use irony a little more often than our special friends in the US.
Zing! Good show, Mr. Pegg.

Simon Pegg wrote an extremely well-written article to promote his film.

A rare (but fantastic) breed.

Didn't know where to put this, so I'll throw it here since it's so fucking random and funny.

Pegg Accidentally Flashes Family Members

British funnyman Simon Pegg was left red-faced when he accidentally revealed his naked self to his entire family. The Shaun Of The Dead star made the mistake of showing his parents and siblings a home-made film without censoring the tape's contents. He says, "I once showed a holiday video to my entire family and forgot there was a point where I flashed. I only realized about one second before it happened and couldn't get to the remote in time to stop them all from seeing me pull down my trousers and reveal myself. My sister screamed and my mum said, 'Ooh, that's changed.'" The actor is next set to appear in cop comedy Hot Fuzz.

Great piece. Wish he wrote a regular column.

Really good article. Also, something I just notice recently that Pegg is on the DVD cover of Land of the Dead.

Best. Ad. Ever.

The only joke in Shaun Of The Dead that never got a laugh in the States was Ed's request for a Cornetto ice cream at 8am on a Sunday morning.
That was supposed to be a joke? I thought it was just emphasizing that Ed was a fat slob who didn't care about what he ate.
That is the joke, but I think your average US audience doesn't know what a Cornetto is. They talk about it on the commentary, too, if I remember correctly.

And I guess the lousy eating habits in America really make a Cornetto at 8am seem more likely.
For me, that's something that could only exist as a joke.

Great essay.

When it comes to their mainstream, America's emotional openness has often given way to a sentimentality that jars with our more guarded and cynical outlook. This is why the initially enjoyable Happy Days became blighted by saccharine lessons in family values, as Henry Winkler's originally subversive Fonzie was mercilessly appropriated by the middle-class American family, castrated by Marion Ross's Mrs Cunningham and forced to sit on it
