newb needs recommendation

So, I'm looking for some recommendations for good PC games. I'm a little new to the PC game world and have just finished Half Life 2 and the first sequel. HL2 was, without a doubt, one of the best games I've ever played .. are there others like that? I picked up Battlefield 2142 or whatever it's called and didn't like it too much. A little tough to navigate, I died all the time, etc.
Anyway, if anyone could suggest a good follow-up to HL, I'd love to hear it.

The most efficient way to get acclimated to this game (and I'm referring to Titan mode online here) is to look at the scoreboard first to see who's the best players on the server. Then you should join their squad (if it's not already full of course) and stick with them for the duration of the round, or multiple rounds if they'll let you stay on. This is a great way to familiarize yourself with the maps and locations of all the relevant goals therein, while also providing a much better chance of staying alive due to their support.

As long as you don't teamkill any of your squadmates or goof off and not assist with the goals, they're usually pretty patient with newbs when you've show that you actually want to learn how to play the game.

Thanks for the tip .. I'll give it a shot. Now for the really dumb question - how do I know if I'm in Titan mode? The times I've played, I just jumped on a team and started doing what they did.

My PC gaming is a little limited, mostly due to the fact that I had Mac for quite some time. Even then, most of the games I'll chuck out are more than a few years old:

X-Wing and TIE Figher: 90's flight sim games that seem to get a lot of love around here. Rightfully so!

Jedi Outcast: Along the Star Wars line again, but this was one of the better FPS games of theirs.

Unreal II: I heard a lot of bad/underwhelmed reviews on this, but I thought it was pretty damn good. This isn't the straight-up frag fest of Unreal Tournament, but a pretty story driven solo FPS experience. Some crazy missions (one involving a living planet), and the last couple chapters really stuck with me.

Tron 2.0: Fun for what it was. That being an average FPS that took me back to dreams I had when I was 7.

Problem is that HL2 did everything so well that I have a hard time thinking of something that could compete.

Do you like mostly FPS games, or do you you like other types?

If you're into FPS titles, I'd recommend the following (some are bit old, but still good):

- Far Cry
- Painkiller
- Aliens vs. Predator 2
- No One Lives Forever 2
- Dark Messiah Of Might & Magic
- F.E.A.R.
- Return To Castle Wolfenstein
- Doom 3
- Call Of Duty
- Call Of Duty 2
- Medal Of Honor
series
- Quake 4
- Unreal Tournament 2004
- Condemned: Criminal Origins
(more melee-based though)
- Hidden & Dangerous 2
- Serious Sam
(first two Encounters)
- Deus Ex (more of an RPG, but it has FPS elements too)

After you've logged on and you're looking at the server list, along the top are several option tabs which you can click on. Hit the Gamemode tab and it will switch between placing Titan and Conquest modes to the top of the server list. You should also utilize the tabs available for optimum Latency (Green=good, Yellow=poor), #of Players, and Maps to help focus your searches.

The best games on PC are theoretically Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape: Torment, but only if you have any tolerance for RPGs.
But not, there ain't much that matches Half-Life 2, though I hear some claim FEAR.
