Best DDR for consoles

I'm just at the point of being embarrassed to know I am embarrassed, but not enough so I don't ask.

Which is the best DDR for consoles and the best mat to get? I've gotten on this rhythm game kick recently and I'd like to give one of these a shot. However, there are approximately 703 versions of it across a myriad of consoles and I was wondering if anyone knew the best one or even just the best one for a newbie to get.

There's really no difference whatsoever in gameplay. Go to gamefaqs, look at the tracklist for each game, choose accordingly.

If there's a clear advantage across any of them, if you have an XBox, the versions for that system have downloadable tracks off of Live. And I know there's a new one coming for the 360 next week if you have the ability to get a jump on that.

As for mats, these games are the prime example of "you get what you pay for". Sure, you could run with one of the bundles that comes with a cheap Konami mat, but once you get good, the thing will be utterly destroyed within weeks. On the other end of the spectrum are the invincible metal platforms you can buy online.....if you've got $500 to blow.

The balanced solution is in the pads with the thick foam rubber inside. They won't last forever either, but it's sturdy enough to withstand some punishment, and the sliding problem with the cheap mats is a non-issue. They're still in the $50-$100 range, though.

I have SuperNova for the PS2 in the Konami bundle, and I gotta disagree with Crow. It "feels" cheap, but it's lasted surprisingly well. Plus, the way it's made, I can just fold it up and stick it in the drawer in my entertainment center (wether or not that's good for it has yet to be seen) when I'm not playing. The whole thing only cost me like $60, so I'd say that's a good place to go, especially if you're just getting started.

If you do it loosely, and along the tic-tac-toe grid between the arrows, folding it is fine.

As for the bundle mats, ok, utterly destroyed's a bit of an overstatement, but the Konami mat does not like intense tracks at all. When I was playing with any sort of regularity, two songs on Normal, and the detection issues crop up regular as clockwork.

That said, yeah, if you are just starting, best to go with the bundle. Your mileage may vary depending on how good you get.

Really? I did a three-hour marathon about a month ago, varying from Beginner to Expert (or whatever the difficulty levels are) and never had a problem. The notes I did miss were simply due to my lack of coordination (and there were LOTS of them). The ONLY drawback I have seen to those Konami mats is that there's no textured separation of the buttons and your feet lose their place, especially if there are a lot of "Down" steps. I really would like that metal one, but I just don't play enough to make it worth it.

I fold my mat and have had no problem with detection issues. Like you, however, I often find my feet not being able to reorient themselves to the mat after a difficult sequence because the pad all feels the same. Textured separation would be great.

Because I'm an asshole, I never came back here to this thread after posting the initial question. Thanks for the comments, guys. I just saw that DDR Whateverthefuck is out for the 360 tomorrow and I have credit at EB. I guess I'll take the plunge. time to lose weight and dance gayly.
