Star Wars boxset might not happen

Either Lucasfilm is too lazy to think up what to put in the damn thing or they really do care more about money than doing the half-decent thing. Star Wars, 30th anniversary, and somehow they don't get it.
Maybe if they hadn't done such a half-assed job with the DVD release of the original originals people would be more interested in this boxset.
They're only saying that box set won't happen this year. Because they spoiled the well going back to it to often (and by not giving the audience what they want, in this case Anamorphic transfers of the original OT). Sufficed to say, they've got nothing ready for the 30th anniversary in May, which would seem a logical time to incite more nostalgia.
Lack of sales of the DVDs released last year would seem to me to indicate an interest in the boxed set, not a lack of it. People were by-passing the inferior discs in favor of waiting for the bonanza they were sure was coming this year. Doesn't anyone at Lucasfilm even consider that posibility?
I haven't any of them (except the OT on VHS) specifically because I am waiting for this boxed set.

You're talking about LucasFilm here...

Ditto, I specifically have avoided buying, or asking for any of the movies so that I could get them all in one fell swoop.

Is everyone just waiting for cgi TPM Yoda?

A company that cares more about making money than doing the half-decent thing? Wow, that's really damning. It's kind of like predators that care more about eating than composing a light opera.

Seriously, did you really think that was a reasonable statement?

But does the general dvd-buying public even know that a box set was imminent, or that it's the 30th anniversary? A box set would no doubt sell well but I think the lack of interest in the previous release was due to a lack of interest in Star Wars in general. It's not like people (outside of die-hard SW fans and the internet community) are waiting with bated breath to see what Lucas puts out next.
Yeah something tells me for a lot of people, the gloss went off Star Wars a long time ago. If there ever was a gloss.
The current youth generation doesn't seem to care much for Star Wars. Even for the ones who like it, there's nothing to distinguish it from all the other special-effects-heavy blockbusters that crowd the theaters every summer. The fact that it invented the genre doesn't cut it with them.
Merchandise and game sales would disagree. Star Wars video games are HUGE.

Star Wars invented Sci-fi? Action Sci-fi? Fantasy action sci-fi? What genre did Star Wars invent?
Maybe genre was the wrong word. I meant the tradition of the big-budget summer blockbuster.

Admittedly, the idea of the youth not being into Star Wars is kind of anecdotal. I just never seem to meet people in their teens-to-twenties who think it's anything special.

I got the original Trilogy on dvd (thanks to the lovely and talented Belethediel) so I'm good. I don't need any spiffy looking definitive giant box set just so I can have three more bad movies in my film collection (well to be fair, I haven't seen Episode 3, so it's POSSIBLE that that movie is not bad).

About as possible as driving a jet car through a mountain.
Every time I read people complaining that Lucas won't put out the Star Wars items that they want to buy, I just think about THX-1138, smile, and take some of my red pills.
Personally, I find it a little strange that people accuse Lucas of money-grubbing multi-release behavior, and now they're complaining about him not releasing a new set. The guy can't win.
I don't think the issue is so much that he's not releasing a new set so much as he's not releasing the right set.
But you know that if he did, the same people would be bitching about the triple-dip, and calling him a fat greedy fuck. The same thing happened when he released the original versions. He was an asshole when he wouldn't release them, and a cash whore when he did.
Lucas seems to have gone out of his way to give his detractors tons of ammunition to use against him. I wish he would stop doing that, for everyone's sake.

Whether or not the set get's released this year, there'd better be an announcement on the status of the unaltereds and soon. This rumor of a delay is what makes me think the unaltereds aren't getting restored, because all they would need is to do that and the set would sell like crazy.

Then again, maybe Lucas intends to drag this out until the day we can only watch the original versions on pay-per-view.
Actually, I suspect that they're working on an HD version. If they made HD downloads of the films available on XBox Live, I know I'd pay to see them.

Thats what I think is happening. I dont think the industry was expecting the consumer to be so willing to get into a DvD to HD format change. Now that that seems to be the case, I think they will just wait until the whole damn thing can be released in a HD format.
Lucasfilm took forever to support standard DVD, opting to take advantage of a fully-grown market rather than jump in early and help grow that very same market. I have no doubts they'll hang back on HD and Blu-Ray as well.

I also have no doubts that LFL will milk standard DVD at least one more time. And to do that, they're going to need a very compelling product. Anything less than this rumored ultimate set won't do the trick at this point.

I'm STAR WARS'd out. Like Chris Rock said, still love it, tired of defending it. I've seen the films too many times, and the Prequels, although I like them, I'm not going to fool myself into thinking they're nearly as good as STAR WARS and EMPIRE.

Unless the TV show comes right out the gate and kicks my ass, I'm done with these movies for at least 10 years. Lucas has oversaturated the market, and he's finally accomplished what it seems he's been trying to do since JEDI - make the general public as sick of these goddamn movies as he is.

There's when your boxed set hits. They'll ramp up the hype for the TV show by releasing the films again.

Your right man, didn't think of that at all.

or show a commercial for the boxset during the premiere of the show. Even if it doesn't hit until then, I won't care as long as Lucas can swallow his pride for a split second and just remaster the films.
People, you will feel more comfortable and relaxed if you consciously decide the following: "I will buy every version of these movies that Lucas releases, and I will use previous purchased versions as gifts to friends or as coasters".

No more worrying about later features, no more double-dipping heart-ache. Just chalk it up as a cost of life and factor it into your budgets for the next twenty years.

This is, of course, the only way I can sleep at night after having bought five different versions of the same three movies.
I wouldn't assume that. I didn't buy the last batch although I did buy the first DVD set.
In one of the Jedi Councils, Drew mentioned the 3-D versions of the films. It ain't over by a long shot. That said, they probably shouldn't have released those DVDs last year. I have those (the only SW DVDs I've purchased), all of which I got for ten bucks and frankly, I'm good. It's not like I throw them on with any frequency.
I haven't bought any of the dvds yet, although I did get the Special Editions as a gift. I'm definitely a fan of the originals, but there are so many other films to watch.
With Blu-ray catching on recently like it has, we will see something. They would be foolish not to.

Steve Sansweet finally says something

Just scroll down to the bottom.

iF: It seems like every fall, there’s some kind of STAR WARS release on DVD. Any plans this fall for the 30th anniversary?

SANSWEET: We have no plans for any DVD releases in the near term.
Pretty idiotic. I can't speak for the general populace, but the few younguns I know absolutely love Lego Star Wars. To the point that I dread being forced into some 2 player co-op in the never ending quest for gold bricks. Consequently, they love Original Star Wars. It has appeal, I'm tellin ya!

My roommate was watching Return of the Sith the other day. Man, that movie is awful. I was rooting against everyone on screen, when I was half-assed watching it waiting for a WC3 battle to hit.

Maybe that was Lucas' intent, and the only character in the whole series who are supposed to identify with is Chewie. Chewie never let us down.

Looks like they're fools. They did mak the prequel afterall.

We should cut Chewie some slack there. He was probably a little bitter about how the Jedi had allowed the galaxy to slide into evil and chaos. I'd imagine it's a lot like how true conservatives feel about the Bush administration.
Seriously. Anakin was Ben's pupil. Chewie obviously knew this. The Big Furry probably assumed Anakin went to the dark side because he found out Obi Wan was mingling midichlorians with Padme, hence the shit talking.

Speak for yourself.

I hate it when people mak the prequel. Especially afterall.

Exactly.

There's a good chance given the time I made that post that I was drunk when I typed it. Unfortunately, editing is blocked after an hour, so it was cemented there when I saw it later. Thanks for being assholes about it. High five.

Sansweet and McCallum recently said in their respective interviews that another dvd release isn't currently planned.
Lucas fucked the dog with this. The 2005 and 2006 releases sucked away any chance of an Ultimate Edition set, particulalry with that half-assed release last fall (which, despite "only being available until the end of 2006" is still available in every store under the sun).

I think we're all just a little sick of Star Wars at this point. Give it a few years to cool off, then give us whatever bastardized, updated bullshit re-re-re-releases he has up his sleeve.
I'm sure they have a bluray edition in the works, or atleast FOX is beggin them to.
I would guess, though, that a Blu Ray edition is second in priority to the 3D theatrical releases they're working on.

i can't wait
