Back to the Future, Part II - Page 2

The only real issue I ever had with Part II was the language. They seem to say "son of a bitch" an awful lot in that film, I find it quite unneccesary.

It is more complete than most middle films in trilogies manage to be, though. Unlike Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, and Pirates of the Caribbean, Back to the Future's middle film has its own storyline. It does pick up where the first left off, and the ending does lead in to the next, but it initiates, carries through, and resolves its very own plot. That's one of the things that makes it a satisfying viewing experience for me.

I think that similar to Matrix Reloaded, Part II ends with a fascinating cliffhanger that the sequel fails to do anything interesting with.

I don't dislike Part III as much as you do, but I certainly agree that it's the weakest film in the trilogy. The old west was a strange setting for the final chapter, as it really removes Marty and Doc from the entire theme of family that runs through the other two. Sure, Marty meets his ancestors, but they're far removed from anyone he knows, and there are no real consequences that arise from his having met them. And the whole movie ends on a treacly, sentimental note that feels out of place from the rest of the series.

I would have loved to see the original version of the film as it was pitched, in which II and III were a single film, and the old west was just the last act.

It would probably have been the same, except the movie would have been longer, and probably would have removed the Clara plotline.

And the end of III is a perfect end to the series (besides Elizabeth Shue's bad acting)

What the Hell? You typed out all that shit because I called you crazy for saying that RETURN OF THE JEDI is better than RETURN OF THE KING?

Look, I'm sorry if you've got your panties in a bunch over something I may have said to you in another thread. But you turned a one-line response into some epic venting of sandy vagina. Shit it wasn't even an insult, more just a statement of disbelief. I mean, my apologies if you're really THAT upset over some crack I made about SUPERMAN or whatever, but jeez. Get over it.

As for the BTTF films....part II is certainly unfairly maligned. I find it to be a wee bit too busy, cramming all sorts of plot convolutions in and kinda suffocating the easy-going charm of the original. But it's a rare thing in that, as others have said, it's a stand-alone middle section that forms a larger part of the trilogy. I guess it's just weird to see Zemeckis et al put the foot on the gas for the entirety of part II and then roll to a stop at the start of part III. Still, it's super-fun and makes the absolute most of the silliness that the time-travel conceit allows.

Should I plug my back to the future 4 script on the movie miscellany forum? It has a lot to do with part 2.

At the beginning of Part II, doesn't loser 80s Biff come running up with his box of freshly printed matchbooks? If so, Marty cleverly grabbed one of Biff's Casino matchbooks with the knowledge that it would provide a temporal window into whether he and Doc had succeeded in correcting the timeline: the Casino matchbook would morph into the Car Detailing matchbook.

I could get behind that theory, I suppose. Marty's experience with the photograph could have prepared him to grab clues to future events when monkeying with the past.

Still waiting patiently for hoverboards to be produced.

I also got a cool pair of "funky" sunglasses for seeing this in the theater. I stopped wearing them soon after.

I'd love to have a hoverboard... that was my dream as a kid. I can't believe how well this film still holds up. I love the whole trilogy... it's perfect to me.

I have a disposition against westerns, so I have a hard time with 3, and oddly enough 2 is the first one I saw, so I have a huge soft spot for it, possibly even more so than the first one. Biff is a great character as well, as we get a shitload of him here.

I have "MCCCFRY" from part II on my phone. Its great for utter silence.

2 was my favourite growning up, and still holds up. 3's delights have only come to me recently, and I dare say I put all 3 on equal footing these days. As for strong middle sections of Trilogies I still have to give that award to The Two Towers :EE.

"You - must - try - the - hot - special!"

"Hover boards don't work on water... unless you got power! MUAHAHAAH"

"Oh, mom, you sure know how to dehydrate a pizza."

Love this movie.

I think it's kinda brilliant and I applaud Zemeckis and Gale for pushing the time travel stuff as far as it can go, including some pretty dark territory after the light, cheesy but ultimately fun first act.

It's the only sequel I can think of that addresses the problem of most sequels, which is...how do we remind the audiences of the glory of the first movie while branching out in a totally new direction?

The result is a sequel in which the characters from the first film end up SAVING the first film in the second film. It's like a meta comment on sequels themselves. By having a sequel, they put the reputation of the first movie in jeopardy and, in the course of the sequel, have to preserve what happened in the first film. What other sequel features characters literally traveling and impacting events that happened in the first movie?

The third was always the weakest to me. But yeah, as a trilogy, it works better than Indy and Star Wars.

I thought it was Ayatolah Headroom saying, "You must try the Hostage Special!"

Shit guys, it's been a while. Although I never recalled "hostage" special.

I think you're right about re-hydrate.

I've lost my VHS so I guess this means I ought to finally get that DVD box set.

I don't see how people made it so far in life without it.

For years I thought this was the weirdest, most ingeniously wacked-out sequel with an undeserved bad rep.

Then I saw INFERNAL AFFAIRS III, and quickly revised that opinion.
