Wince about it after watching it here:

I don't know...is it worse than the Prothro injury?

It hurt like the dickens to have my dislocated thumb and middle finger snapped back into place....I can't imagine how excruciating it would be to have your kneecap relocated.

I had it happen in the military. I can honestly say it was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life, and I've been through some shit. My heart goes out to him.

I refuse to watch. Being a basketball player, I can't even stand to see an ankle sprain, let alone all that I've heard about this.

I'm just glad the Lakers were on last night, or I might have been watching this game instead. Although maybe seeing it at the time, and a replay, would not have been as bad as watching after all I've heard.

Watch it Chris. It's like a rite of passage. If you can view the five replays without clutching your knee, congratulate yourself.

The most horrific part is not the moment of injury (although that is gruesome), it's watching his suddenly boneless lower leg flop around uselessly while he writhes in pain. When you have one foot/leg pointing forward, and the other pointing backwards while held together only by skin, you know that the prognosis is not good.

Jesus, just that description has got me queasy.

The worst part about that clip is that out of all the versions available on youtube none have that Marv Albert blooper music playing.

That shit hurts just looking at it. Damn I feel for the guy.

As a hockey guy, here's my vote for most horrible...be thankful it's a bit grainy. I saw it on TV in '89 when it happened.

Yeah the throat slit is brutal. I don't think any other sports injury can top that.

By BETH HARRIS, AP Sports Writer
February 27, 2007

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Clippers point guard Shaun Livingston will be out 8-to-12 months after tearing three of the four ligaments in his left knee while driving to the basket against Charlotte.

"It's probably the most serious injury you can have to the knee," Clippers physician Dr. Tony Daly said Tuesday. "He might miss all of next year."

Livingston had an MRI exam Tuesday which revealed tears in the anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and lateral meniscus.

He also dislocated his patella, besides the previously diagnosed dislocation of his tibia-femoral. As a rookie in 2004, he dislocated his right knee.

Livingston was driving to the basket on a fast break Monday night, went up for a layup, and his left knee contorted as he collapsed in pain. A team doctor had to pop his knee back into place to alleviate the pain.

"He came down on the leg without any contact with anybody. It's a freak accident, that's for sure," said Daly, who has rarely seen anything similar in 24 years of practice.

He said the injury is more commonly associated with contact sports such as football and rugby.

Daly will solicit various medical opinions over the next two weeks, after which Livingston will have arthroscopic surgery, the doctor said. It wasn't yet decided if all three ligaments would be repaired at once.
The worst part is, he didn't even make the uncontested layup.

I remember when Theissman injured his leg - never heard an entire stadium crowd go "OOOOHHHHHH DAMN!!!!" in unison before.
wow...i had never seen the throat slit before...that was really disturbing.

the livingston injury definitely looks like the most painful injury ever though.

I hate to be pessimistic, but with all those ligament tears I think we won't see him on the court for a long time.
Can't watch it. Nope. My local news did a bit about the injury last night but chose not to air the video, saying it was too graphic.

My stomach turns when I watch that video of the arm-wrestling wrist snap, so this doesn't seem like it's up my alley.

Here's the actual broadcast of the game where Clint Malarchuk got injured, complete with the announcers freaking out:

Yeah, that's hard to watch.
I watched most of the videos in this thread, but that last one took the cake. The blood was on the damn ice. Thanks, wade!

That hockey injury is pretty gruesome. I'm amazed the guy lived.
For sheer awfulness, the Prothro injury is worse. He didn't even have the benefit of his leg hanging out of joint...it was hanging from the middle of his shin. Plus, he was pretty much headed toward being a pick in the top 2 rounds of the NFL draft but he hasn't played a down since (it's been more than 12 months). Career ending injuries just don't often occur anymore.
there's no way i'm watching some guys throat get cut.

the livingston injury is pretty awful, he'll be out longer than a year.
Since we're sharing, here's the only one of these I recall seeing live. The Raiders' Napoleon McCallum's career ender against the Niners.

I'd forgotten that one, nasty stuff. Still, you don't expect people to die from these freaky leg injuries (although I would guess it's possible). Every time I watch that hockey video, I can't believe the guy lived. His throat is gushing blood all over the ice, for pete's sake!
That hockey video is the main reason I'm up later than usual. I'm afraid to sleep because all I'm gonna see is the blood spurting on the ice. Horrible, horrible stuff.
I'm glad I didn't see this.

Speaking as someone who enjoys playing sports but has a pair of bad knees (i've dislocated them several times and the pain is hard to describe) my heart goes out to Shaun.

Thats some seriously scary shit.

He needs to cowboy up and walk that off.

That injury just highlights even more how much of a pussy Dwayne Wade is for bawling like a schoolgirl and needing a wheelchair to get off the court from a shoulder injury.
I watched it. Damn.

And I have a game tonight. No layups. Just gonna bomb threes.
Damn, that's pretty brutal and I thought this John Terry injury the other day was the only bad injury to happen lately. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxSglU-zxt4

Poor Shaun Livingston, and poor all those other guys. The worst thing about those injuries when a couple minutes afterwards the thought of never being able to play again, or at least never being able to play the same way. You can see it on Shaun's face when he's on the stretcher at the end.

Protho's break is like what happens to kickboxers on freak occasions, scary.

And I will agree with Guttenberg on the annoying whining and rolling around on the floor that some typical poser in the nba will do when nothing happens to them, then they are up playing fine a minute later. Those guys should watch these clips then have their asses kicked. As a person who's torn their acl it's always pissed me off to see the fake whiners.

How did they save that goalie's life by the way, watching that clip I was really worried that he was going to die on the ice. If I was a hocey goalie I would make sure I wore an iron throat guard after seeing that clip.

I had to look it up on Wikipedia:

Quote:
What saved Malarchuk's life—more accurately, who—was Jim Pizzutelli, the team's trainer and a former Army medic who served in Vietnam. He reached into Malarchuk's neck and pinched off the bleeding, not letting go until doctors arrived to begin suturing the wound. Still, Malarchuk came within minutes of becoming only the second on-ice fatality in NHL history.

All the kids in Canada are required to wear Kevlar neck and throat guards to play these days.

When you're the king of the castle you get certain perks!
I wish I were the best player on an nba team so I could act like a bitch too, that would be awesome.

Malarchuck should make sure he sends that trainer a card during the holidays.

That eye popping one seems like a cartoon. Ugh.

The best part of the CNNSI story: the comments. It reminds me of the cabin scene in Jaws.

That is one of the most chilling ones to watch, but he was somehow unhurt. The guy was blind in that eye for only a short amount of time. He missed about a week or so and came back to play well in the NCAAs.
