There is too much pr in people minds to objectively and originally view things a lot of times I think.
Agree on the Chappelle/Pryor comparison. Chappelle's comedy might be just another version of the "black man" act, but there's no denying that the take is uniquely his. And for pure funny you can't get much better than him. One of the few comedians who's actually made me cry based on an album alone. Brian Regan too is brilliant, probably not as influential as the "classics", but he's every bit as funny.

As far as Dane Cook's concerned, I live out of America so I've been pretty much oblivious to anything he's done apart from Retaliation and Harmful if Swallowed. And I still find them both damn funny. Definitely in a lowbrow sort of way. But still... he doesn't bother me nearly as much as he does most people. He doesn't belong on a "best of" list though.

Don Rickles

Without him, there would be no Triumph the Insult Comic Dog or Lisa Lampanelli, and he's still funnier than both of them.

Agreed. He belongs in a flick or sitcom, not writing stand-up IMO. I do appreciate his marketability increasing awareness of the art, in spite of his demographic (and theft accusations).

EDIT: Sorry, I'm gonna have to add Robin Williams. Sure he was coked out of his mind and has made a lot of bad movies this lifetime, but I remember being utterly floored by his rapid-fire spontaneity and energy before his stuff became old-hat (the U.N. of stereotype vioces)...

He's a good add, no doubt. Just remember to only post one addition per day. Thanks.

Darkmite took my next pick, the tool.
I'm glad someone added Rickles, there's a lot of old-school stand-ups who need some love.
I hate Robin Williams. I think he has mistaken doing the same three or four annoying characters - ebonically and maniacally - for the past two decades as being "cutting edge". The truth is that he was tiring to watch when he played Mork on "Happy Days" and nothing's changed. Nanoo, nanoo, indeed.

So I am sending Sam Kinison into this list to scream Mork back into his egg. And maybe there'll be enough room in there for Jonathan Winters - Robin's idol - to fit, as well. Oh! OH! OHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Are you distinguishing between his movie and TV characters or talking about his stand-up as well?

How on Earth has this man not been mentioned yet - RODNEY DANGERFIELD!! Not only is he simply funny as hell, but he is adored by basically every other comedian ever and has practically attained God-like status.

Glad to see there are other people who like Regan. I always like to think of Regan as the "What if Will Ferrel had done stand up instead?" guy.

Not to mention, he does a great "Idiot Guy" voice.

"I think I'm a little uncomfortable...want a piece of gum?"

I like Regan's new material with the idiot guy voice where he's going to the emergency room but can't find parking. "You mind if I park there, I'm dying. Oh you're dying too, ok I'll just go up a couple more levels."

Robert Schimmel

I see names like Louis C.K. and Brian Regan, both of whom I think are fantastic, and I feel like Schimmel belongs in the same company. He's had a lot of health problems and some odd personal stuff that may have gotten in the way of his career taking off but his "Unprotected" special hit every chord with me the first time I saw it.

Here's the first 10 minutes of that special. Even if he's not your thing at least get to the bit about him taking a rabbit to the vet.

Richard Jeni.

His HBO/Showtime/Whatever comedy specials killed me during the late 80s/early 90s. He has a routine about staying up all night and watching all 4 of the 'Jaws' movies that's particularly funny. I saw him live in Las Vegas about 7 years ago, and he was still hilarious.

The list so far:
Steven Wright
Richard Pryor
Red Foxx
Bill Hicks
George Carlin
Bill Cosby
Lenny Bruce
Eddie Murphy
Eddie Izzard
Steve Martin

Since Flaparoo was kind enough to add Rodney Dangerfield yesterday, I've got to find somebody else.

I'm going to the bubble for this one, not because the guy isn't talented but because he got himself a talk show fairly early on and stand-up has been on the backburner ever since.

Jon Stewart.

Stewart's one of those guys who reads as funny as he writes. He reminds me a lot of Woody Allen that way. But he's a remarkable performer as well. His timing is impeccable, which is no small feat considering how "wordy" his material is.

I hope he gets the chance to write more books. His bit about a Jew going to visit JFK in "Naked Pictures of Famous People" is bitingly, blisteringly funny.

The list so far:
Steven Wright
Richard Pryor
Red Foxx
Bill Hicks
George Carlin
Bill Cosby
Lenny Bruce
Eddie Murphy
Eddie Izzard
Steve Martin
Mitch Hedberg
Louis C.K.
Andrew Dice Clay
Larry Miller
Brian Regan

Don Rickles
Robin Williams
Phyllis Diller
Sam Kinison
Rodney Dangerfield
Robert Schimmel
Richard Jeni
Jon Stewart
Richard Jeni might be one of the worst comedians on the planet, and putting him in a best comedians of all time list is an insult to every comedian alive, dead or not yet born.
Dot Dot Dot, in your opinion. Apparently, there's at least one guy who thinks otherwise. I don't think Jeni is an all-timer, but I also despise Robin Williams' tired schtick with every fiber of my being. However, I'm willing to discuss it.
Again, someone most people know from a different medium than standup -- Bob Newhart.

The list so far:

There're probly some people who feel that Little Man is a great film too. Doesn't mean I'm gonna discuss it.

...
Good call on Newhart!

How about Johnny Carson? People were eager to hear his newest 10-minute set five nights a week for decades. Or is that too far afield?

I would also make a case for Groucho Marx, but then we dip into vaudeville, and the waters get murky.

That's right, I have his first album and the Eye Dr visit isn't on there but I hear he's got a second album out now.

"I before E....always."

And BTW great call on Newhart

That's tough because the fundamental question is whether Carson could be considered a stand-up. I'll argue to the end that his delivery and timing were among the very best there ever was, but that question remains. I don't know. This is a stupid question, but did he write his own monologues? If so, he absolutely merits consideration. If not, the question gets more difficult.

I know what you mean. I was very tempted to add George Burns.

Robert Klein. The man who basically launched the one-hour pay cable stand-up special phenomenon.

Like all hosts, he had writers, but he also wrote . . . I recall when he died, Letterman did a monologue consisting of jokes that he wrote for Dave in the past year or so before his death.

Carson was originally a magician before becoming a TV personality . . . I would put him closer to that Burns/Hope/Marx/Berle era, when jokes were more commonplace, and stealing material was even more accepted than it is now. However, Carson could certainly write on his own, and God knows his delivery and timing is just about second-to-none.

I wanted to insert Carson before I decided on someone else yesterday, but I couldn't be sure about the origin of his material either.

Molt, looked into Robert Schimmel... some funny stuff.
Today I'm adding a guy most people may never have heard of (or don't care to).

Paul Mooney

He wrote alot of stuff for Pryor and did some work on the Chappelle show.
Depending on who you are you'll either find him a very funny man or a rambling racist. 99.9% of his act deals with race, race relations in America and class.

Steven Wright
Richard Pryor
Red Foxx
Bill Hicks
George Carlin
Bill Cosby
Lenny Bruce
Eddie Murphy

Mooney's a great addition to the list. Also, Gary Shandling.

I remember Doug Stanhope calling Mooney "the most racist comic (he's) ever seen" after the whole Michael Richards incident. I really haven't seen enough of his stand-up to form an opinion, but he's certainly a legend.

An actor friend of mine is good friends with Mooney and has so many stories about him it's unbelievable. He flies under the radar but he's revered by most comics. The guy will come in and shut down clubs. He'd come in, get on the stage whenever and still be going at five in the morning.

God Dammit, Dickson, I came here all happy ready to add Bob Newhart and heap praise. Oh well.

Another Bob that should make it is BOBCAT GOLDTHWAIT. I know he's not everybody's cup of tea, but if you just know him from the Police Academy flicks, do yourself a favor and get a hold of his act somewhere.

This is another of the it may be too soon department, but there is nobody who makes me laugh more consistently these past few years than Jim Gaffigan. I'm hesitant to add him, I'd like to see what most of you think.

EDIT:The list so far:
Steven Wright
Richard Pryor
Red Foxx

Gaffigan is funny, but yeah, too soon.
I was thinking of adding Gaffigan for the same reason I went with Schimmel. I suppose he's well-known enough but he really is one of the best guys going at the moment and doesn't seem to get enough mention when today's best comics are discussed.

I already have someone in mind for my next pick, otherwise I'd say Gaffigan.
Gaffigan was just scheduled to perform at my school in a couple of months actually. I'll make sure to check it out.
I'm wondering what people would think of the addition of Jerry Seinfeld to the list. Personally, I don't find him all that funny but there's no denying that he's had a lot of influence in the industry.

I'm not the biggest fan of his standup act, either. Mostly because by the time I knew who he was and caught his act, his clones had permeated the industry.

I think it would be hard to argue with his addition to the list.

Do it. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I'll tell you what, if you don't have a great time, the hot pockets are on me.
Seinfeld would have been my next addition. His little bits before his TV show were usually good but that's just the tip of the iceberg. His old appearances on Carson and Letterman were always terrific.

K. Well consider him added then.

Yeah i actually just listened to Beyond the Pale and the first track I listened to was Hot Pockets, which was hilarious, as was basically the whole album. I had always thought Gaffigan was pretty funny, but I had only seen him on a few random things on TV here and there, but this CD definitely has me completely sold.

By my count we're now at 37. I have to think we can get to at least 50. Then again, I don't want to arbitrarily add people the same way I don't want to arbitrarily take them away. I also don't want to drag anything out unnecessarily.

Thoughts? Rath?
I think we could make it to 50. 75 would be a challenge but it might give us more to work with. Still, there are a lot of good people being left off -- Flip Wilson, Richard Belzer, Richard Lewis, and Albert Brooks being a few names that come to mind. (I am not picking these, just bringing them up.)

Also, once again, I don't think we should do a knockout but a reverse elimination until we get to the 25 or so best comedians.
List needs more ladies and Ellen DeGeneres is the lady to do it. At her peak, Ellen was the shit and renewed interest and opened the door for female stand ups in a very male dominated profession. And as her invitation to host the latest Oscars proves, many people think she's still got it.

Oh, and I second, third, fourth the Gaffigan love. My friends and I have recently become obsessed with hot pockets.

That's the thing about this list, and comedy in general, we could go on and on and on. Good call with Belzer, I was thinking about picking him. I think Matchstick mentioned Garry Shandling, he should definitely make it on here as well.
I think 50's a good place to start. I have a feeling anyone who came after that would pretty much end up eliminated anyway.
