American Hardcore

Netflixed this and watched it yesterday. Pretty good documentary although glad I waited for it on DVD.

I'll say I wish I got to know more about the music than for the fact it pretty much consisted of screaming and beating the shit out of each other. (Unless that was pretty much it) Makes me wonder if Palahniuk got the idea of Fight Club out of this whole scene.

However the good moments came from watching the background action of all the video footage they had and of Rollins telling a frightening story of a cop trying to get Rollins to hit him.

I was a bit too young and was more aware of what they would term "second-wave" hardcore.

But still, I am a fucking whore for docs like this, where tons of people "who wuz there" sit around recounting what happened and ruminating about what it all meant.

And the live clips, and testimonials of the other artists, once again leave me boggled as to why The Bad Brains aren't regarded as utter fucking giants of American music.

Too bad the NYC scene get completely glossed over in this. I want my late 80s youth crew documentary dammit!

You'd probably rather check this out then- http://www.myspace.com/nyhcdocumentary

I was huge into hardcore while growing up but just got sick of the whole scene.Too many people go to shows just to start shit, and unless you've got a crew with you, you run the risk of getting in a fight if you hit someone accidentally in the pit. Too many people wanting to get in the scene with not enough knowledge of what it's about. Haven't been to a show in over a year.

I never got into the whole hardcore scene, I found there to be too many assholes. That and the fact that I usually got the shit knocked outta me on a daily basis, did not feel like bothering with that at shows.

Any mention of Negative Approach? Otherwise this documentary is useless.

I can't remember to be honest if that band was mentioned or not.

I don't know if it's me or not but something always bothered me about how these guys would abstain from drugs and alcohol (Straight-Edgers) which admittedly is a great thing suddenly start just beating on anyone's ass at a moment's notice in this scene. I can't justify it but for some reason I just found it hypocritical of me.

There are assholes in every scene as far as I can tell, and a whole lot of cool people too. Anyways, straightedge kids are a very small part of the hardcore scene. AH barely touched on sXe with Minor Threat. I would love to see a doc featuring Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Judge...etc. Those are the bands that really influenced me.

I'm pretty sure they were MENTIONED, but nothing in depth.

I thought DRI sorta got a short shrift as well - IIRC they were kind of a big deal in the mid 80s.

That frustrated me a little, too. Hardcore is a pretty frustrating movement in general to me, because as you can see in the documentary, the scene was practically birthed in aggressive stupidity, but at the same time, I think the best hardcore records are just about my favorite records, period.

And yeah, every scene has it's assholes, but there really were a lot more of them in hardcore, because the scene encouraged assholism. I had a slight disagreement with the movie in saying that the scene just died overnight in 1984. I think it just evolved into the indie rock scene for everyone of any intelligence or taste, and the meathead idiots stuck with hardcore as it became more metal-influenced, kept all the aggressin but lost all the fun.
