Given the list of nominees for Best Picture at the 79th Academy Awards, I think that it would've been kind of ridiculous if The Departed had not won. But because I don't pay the Oscars any attention until they're televised, and based on how fantastic Pan's Labyrinth was, I assumed that it had to be nominated in the Best Picture category. Of course, not only was a I wrong but it didn't even end up winning the prize for Best Foreign Language Film. [I've heard that The Lives of Others is great and it had better knock my socks off to have beaten out Pan's.]
The Departed and Pan's Labyrinth are the two films from 2006 that I consider new classics. But to be fair, there were some nominees and other big films that I still haven't seen (i.e. Babel, The Queen, Children of Men). So I set up this poll here because I'm curious which of these films you guys would have picked for Best Picture if Pan's Labyrinth had been given a shot in that category. I know that both of these films have already been discussed to death on the CHUD boards, but I've been curious about this for a bit.
My choice? Pan's Labyrinth. Scorsese is probably my favorite director, and I loved The Departed, but I wouldn't quite put it up there with Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and Goodfellas. But it hasn't had the chance to age yet, so who knows...
