Always had a fondness for the character, who is scary pretty much exclusively to ages 6 and below, but is REALLY fucking scary. Before I saw any of the movies, I caught a commerical for one of em as a youngin and had nightmares for 6 months.

I haven't seen the first one in a long time, and maybe it's only my impressions from watching it as a kid, but it's the only scary one in the series. They started getting a lot sillier after that.

Going back to our "walking around the video stores as a kid" discussion, in mine there was a poster for one of the Child's Plays that had him about to decapitate a jack-in-the-box. Always freaked me out.

Child's Play 2. I loved that style of poster, with the subjects lit but the rest of the box in darkness, where the characters seemed to be existing in some kind of space rather than being cut and paste onto the box. See also Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter.

EDIT: Also, the box for Basket case (at least the VHS. Dunno if they changed the cover for the DVD).

Yeah, that music box posted was inspired from the teaser trailer, where it's total darkness, save for a shining light on a spinning Jack in the box that was playing. At the point where the head was going to pop out, Chucky steps on it, and scowls, "Sorry, Jack. Chucky's back!" The next few times I saw that trailer, I had to cover my eyes, since the music playing meant Chucky was going to scare the fuck out of me.

If I close my eyes, I can still see Chucky's burned, disembodied head cursing me out from over the mantlepiece/ "Child's Play" fucked me up.

I was 9 y/o and my dad took me to see Darkman when I saw that trailer. I was freaked out having nightmares every day that week. It didn't help any when the trailers hit TV.

Chucky's never scared me, but his movies are still the shit. He's one of the great underrated movie bad guys and Child's Play 2 is still one of the most fun movies ever. Even the last 3 had their moments.

That last one was worth seeing it for two reasons- Billy Boyd as the son of Chucky (his voice kept cracking me up) and the completely fucking random appearance of John Waters.

I enjoyed to new ones, but I still don't get why they ditched the whole Andy Barclay angle. I realise that it freed them to do more stuff with the character, but to me Andy was integral to the series. I just found it hilarious, the idea that intermittently throughout his life, he'd be pursued by this demonic fucking doll and had to explain to everyone why all these people around him ended up dead. Not to mention the fact that they do all this bitching in the first one about how Chucky's new body needs to be Andy.

"Someone's moved in with the Barclay family... and so has terror!"

yeah, I always liked that poster/VHS art too. I actually still have a bumper sticker that says "Sorry Jack, Chucky's Back" that I got at a local video store as a promotional piece for the VHS release. I've held onto it for years, sometimes thinking it would be cool to put on my car, yet I don't want to ruin it... So in a box it sits, next to my Tom Savini autograph.
