Resident Evil Gamecube remakes...

I'm not normally a gamer but now that I have a Wii I can play 2 games I've always wanted to: The Twin Snakes and Resident Evil 4.I'm halfway through Resident Evil 4 and yes,it's amazing, everyone knows that. But before this I really didn't know much about the RE universe. So I ask you, anyone, are any of the Gamecube Remakes worth playing?I'm talkin 0-3.I heard nemesis aint great but for someone who hasn't played it...is it a must?
from my understanding, the only true remake was RE1. and then that one on the train was for the gamecube only.

the rest were all ports.

This is correct.

Well...worth playing?
i hate to say it but i got bored with RE when i got to the castle. shooting bad guys for 20+ hours kind of got me ready for something new, not a million more bad guys.

also i downloaded RE4 for the PC thinking it would be a blast to play with keyboard and mouse... nope, it's a straight port of a console game. you have to either use a game controller or map keys to gamepad keys. you can't use the mouse for anything at all, even the menu

Once you've played RE4, its damn near impossible to go back.

That said, I've seen the REmake and RE Zero for less than $10 in most places. They might be worth a go for that price.

The RE2 and Nemesis ports, however, are out of print, and expensive as shit. Ignore.

It's very hard playing any other resident evil game after playing part 4. But the resident evil 1 remake is still cool. I really don't care much about resident evil zero. It was too boring for me.

And to note, Resident Evil 4 never got boring to me. It just kept getting bigger and better.
They're all terrible, except for 4. Save your money.
As much as I love the RE games, I know on an objective level that Slater's right. There's no way you'd enjoy them very much now, after playing 4 first. EDIT: I've only played the originals, not the GameCube versions.
The RE1 remake for the Gamecube is the only one that I'd recommend - but with reservations. After playing RE4 the controls and gameplay are going to seem like a big step backwards. If you can find it really cheap it might be worth a try.

Totally.
Yeah, I've got to agree with everyone here.
On the plus side, the RE1 remake is scary as fuck compared to RE4(which is more about intensity than scares), and the graphics for RE1 and RE0 are still very pretty. Unfortunately, along with that comes all the bad aspects of the pre-RE4 Resident Evil games. And there are a lot of them.
RE1 is worth a shot if you buy it cheap. If you like that, pick up zero.
I like all the RE game (well except for the light gun games and the GBC one) and I think you should give RE0 and RE a try and if you like them go for 2, 3 and CV.I consider 4 to be the best game in the series but it's also not even close to representing what the rest of the games are like. It's an amazing action game while the other RE games are all about puzzle solveing and carefully managing your ammo and health items.Try RE, which I think is the best of the old series and if you like that one you will probably like the other ones.

If you're about to finish RE4, you'd probably want to get RE:Code Veronica next. Veronica is actually the 4th entry of the series, but since Sega was involved, I think Capcom prefers to ignore it in the chronology. The game is the closest to RE4 in regards to graphics and controls, and it runs in real time 3D unlike the previous games static backgrounds.

I have the RE remake, as well as RE:0, but I haven't gotten around to playing them much. I played the original RE on PS1 when it first came out, so I think that's why I haven't been in any rush to play the GC remake. I agree with the others in that it's very difficult to get into these older games if you're playing RE4 before them, but if you can manage to, you should try and play the other games in order before going to Veronica anyway, you just might be pleasantly surprised with them if you give them a chance.

I have almost all the Resident Evil games for the PS 1 and 2, except the light gun ones, and they've really come a long way. I remember playing them back when they were released, and thinking that each one got better, and they did. RE4 is the best of all of them, and part 5 is looking to be fantastic. I've never played any of the Gamecube ones, but the REmake did look interesting, when I saw my cousin play it at his house.

I remember being in love with every single Resident Evil game at one point or another... But you need to understand that I fell in love with them when they came out, and they were hot shit at the time. I don't get the impression someone joining the band wagon late would really enjoy any of the older games... That said, the remake and Zero are essentially the best that the classic resident evil format is going to get, along with Code Veronica. If you want to give them a go, make sure you're chill with the fixed camera angles, puzzles and slow gameplay.

This is the most true thing you will read today.

Even for 5$ or 10$ they aren't worth it. Just play RE4 a few dozen times, one of my all time favorite games.

Hey man, when I first played MGS3 I was playing MGS1 for my first time as well.Switching off between each of them, and man..This was 2006 and I still felt moved by MGS1.Woo.Best game I ever played, and MGS3 is up there too.

But I'm convinced not to bother with the REmake.RE4 is too good.Anybody play mercenaries on RE4?
Yes. Resident Evil 4 is very good. We all know that... Try the remake anyways!

But...I want to get the hand cannon.
I was wowed each time I went through the original games, I still think they're some of the best games that I've ever played.
Meaning you haven't played 4.

By the way, except graphically, Code Veronica's aged like fine shit.
RE2 is the only non RE4 game worth playing. The N64 version is far superior to the PS1 version because they improved its horrendous camera angles.

I've played 4, I got it when it came out for the PS2, and I even have the premium edition. It's an excellent game, and is superior to all of the rest. I was just saying that I like them all, and that they all just progressively 1up'ed each other. Except Code Veronica, that last boss is the hardest I've ever fought against in any of the series.

This pretty much sums it up. like the Castlevania series, the older RE games got by on a fairly rigid formula. so one would have to tolerate certain aspects of the game to get to the real meat- the perfect siege atmosphere, the calculated tension, the fake and foreshadowed scares, the attention to genre detail. Take the RE1 remake for example- the first time you encounter a Crimsonhead, the buildup to meeting "Lisa", the Lucio Fulci tributes, all of these indicate real horror genius at work. lots of nice, meaty, real-world based guns in the RE games too.

not worth $5? what a load of shit. If you can find them for that, take a chance.

All those things are pretty great, but get trumped by the games major flaw of being NOT FUN AT ALL.

He's no Krauser in my opinion. Once I got that fucker I never had much desire to play as anyone else. That glowing arm thing is just too fucking powerful(HAHAHA FUCK YOU, DUAL CHAINSAW GUY!).

Exactly.I love destroying the chainsaw guy,as well as the blind dudes and the machine gunner. But snapping a Bella sister's neck is soooo satisfying.

question:now that i unlocked the handcannon, how do i access it?it's supposed to be free, but i started a new game and the merchant does not have it.

I'm not sure actually. Maybe if you have a "new round"(or "clear round", whatever the save is called after you've beaten the game) save then you can access it? There's always www.gamefaqs.com if that doesn't do the trick.
I never got the handcannon, and not for lack of trying.

Just watch the runs on youtube.Type the characters name and the map (leon village, wesker waterworld, etc) and a bunch come up.There are some real gods among men when it comes to mercenaries, getting like over 100k.Now I just want to play to get high scores. One guy went through castle with krauser using only his knife, and i think he got 60k.
I'll have to look some of those up. I think my highest was around 75,000(Krauser, of course), with a few that were higher scores but I croaked.

When you start a new game using a "clear" file you get the option of selecting an outfit and shopping before the game starts, that's where you get your gun.

It's been awhile, but I was able to get over 100k in the Village and Castle.

With who? This should just be turned into a mercenaries score thread.I find it so fun and everyone can agree it's challenging...Gets my heart rate up.
Hunk is just plain awesome,as long as I pick up enough ammo,I just like to spray.I just wish I could break the garrador's necks....

There is a really strong wikipedia page on everything Resident Evil, if you care about the story enough.
