The Fountain DVD Art

I know it didn't do well in theatres but c'mon!

Ugh. Someone's gotta make a better cover that we can print out and throw in there.
Hmmm...seems a bit too typical, and given that The Fountain is very a-typical, it doesn't quite work. Obviously, I'm still buying it because that was the best movie last year.

I hope for the special edition, the cover looks like the cover of Izzie's book. Plain, simple with 'The Fountain' scrawled in beautiful script.

When's this coming out?!?!!

"Please don't be upset, my love. I left the last piece of Broccoli for you. It tastes absolutely divine."
This or the cover for Children of Men, I dont know which is worse...
Holy Christ. TERRIBLE.
Wonderful. Kinda captures what the movie is all about. A Romantic historical epic in the spirit of The New World.
They really want to make sure nobody rent this, do they ?
On the contrary, many more of the average audiences who didn't see it theatrically, put off by the high concept, LOVE romantic movies.

They will, of course, HATE it, but first they have to rent it.
Not even a Devin quote, I'm absolutely disgusted!

Well I remember Aronofsky mentioning a Criterion edition later down the line, so nothing to worry about.

It does look about as good as The New World DVD art. Shameful.
Was this designed by the same genuises who put together the Serenity box art?
Pretty icky, though if Criterion talk is true (can it be?), then that's pretty neat. I really hadn't seen a movie so undeservedly savaged by the critics as much as this one.

I think he mentioned it in a Devin interview, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
If the goal is to rent and sell DVDs, playing devil's advocate, this probably achieves that better than the theatrical artwork. Yes, it's going to look like ass in your collection, but the theatrical poster didn't really meet prospective audiences halfway. This one actually shows you who's in it, which, for those browsing the rental shelves, is sort of important.
I actually don't mind it these days when the first edition out has a crappy cover. It means they'll probably use one of the brilliant posters for the Better Edition.

And I hadn't heard about the Criterion Fountain thing, but it just made my morning. Cheers for that!
A five minute google on Aronofsky and Criterion only got me this myspace message from the director:

Quote:
1. I do believe there is going to be an HD-DVD, and because it has more storage space it will have some additional extra things.

2. To be clear, there is no pre-pg-13 cut. The cut that was in the cinema was MY FINAL CUT. I made all the decisions on it (with my team of course) but creatively it was the filmmaker's vision. This is the same cut you will all see on DVD and the HD-DVD. What happened is this: originally we were given an R rating. I went back to the MPAA and with a little negotiating the film got a PG-13 rating. This was the rating I had always wanted for the film and so I made an effort to get it. But the film was in no way creatively effected. So to be clear, there was NO studio pressure it was purely my choice to try to get a PG-13 rating. Many teenagers were writing asking for me to help them out. So what you saw in the cinema and what you will see at home is the DIRECTOR'S FINAL CUT.
A five minute Chud search got me this Devin interview excerpt:

Quote:
What can we expect on the DVD for this film? I was watching the movie last night and I couldn’t decide if I wanted a commentary that would give away every bit of symbolism and meaning or not.

There is no commentary. Warner Bros was not interested in it, so I did not push it. My whole thing is that I realized… Criterion was interested in Pi and Requiem, but because I put everything out on [the original DVDs], they didn’t really find a reason to do them. So when Warner Bros said they weren’t interested, I said, hey I’ll keep this in my pocket and eventually… I enjoy it because I got so much out of commentaries from other films I learned a lot.

So you’re telling me you want to do The Fountain as a Criterion DVD?

I’d love to.

That's an awesome idea. I was thinking they should just use one of the posters, but your idea is something I'd much rather see.

Maybe we'll get really lucky and Best Buy (or someone) will put out a special cover for the film like they did for The Departed. But I'm not holding my breath...
Just going by the above quote, all this talk of a Criterion edition is sounding very Oh Don Piano.
Best Buy put out a special cover for The Departed? Nice.

I agree. I mean, I'm sure every director out there would love to have their movie as part of the Criterion collection, but it's a lot more complicated than just filling out an application and hoping that they want to. As for the cover........the less said the better. I doubt a Best Buy DVD will do much to improve it (and that's assuming they even bother, which I doubt they will).
....its ass, but I'll still be buying and then buying the Criterion as well.

It's worth the double dip.
Nobody told me there was swordplay in this movie! I'm totally renting this.

Yeah, and it's much nicer than the normal cover art. This isn't just a paper insert, the entire cover has a gunmetal look & feel to it. The art for the discs is the same as the two disc editions, though.

Normally I'd agree with you, but they did a hell of a job with the above cover. The two disc edition isn't that bad, but still like the Best Buy version better than both by a long shot.

Unfortunately, The Fountain won't get this treatment, but it would be nice if it did...

This should have been the cover:
LL
That image would have been much better.

I saw the Making-of doc - very, very good. Worth the purchase of the DVD alone, regardless of cover art.
Don't hold your breath on a Criterion anytime soon, though.
Thats a great picture and should have been the cover.

As for the legitimate and weak cover art oh well the movie is awesome so i'll be getting it.
Apparently, this is the spanish theatrical poster:

Well, when is this art piece out ?

And could we get myers87 to try to make a cover for The Fountain ? It cannot be worse.
That Best Buy version looks like it's for a remake of Mean Streets.
My opinion. Darren should call up Criterion, release a proper DVD, and have the artwork be in the design of the leatherbound notebook in the film. Would be brilliant, but alas, I'm merely dreaming I think.

I temped for a month in Warner Home Video's creative arts department. These are the same people who created the shit Superman covers (No Richard Pryor on Superman III case). They're dumber than retarded goats.
yikes. I hate to say it, especially since Devin brought up the exact same issue, but that really does put me off getting the DVD.

I see you live in the UK. Most likely your cover art will be much more innovative than ours.

I used to think that way too, but these days its becoming more like a lottery. I prefer the region 1 of Children of Men, the one where Clive is trying to hide behind a wall to cover his humiliation of being on the cover.

fingers crossed......very likely in vein - assuming that is they pony up a release this calendar year.

The Embryo one sheet would have been a nice one too. Simple yet evocative.

Any one of the teaser posters would have been great, embryo or the 'turn the lights off' one. It is frustrating seeing so many excellent teaser posters for films that eventually get a really shitty DVD cover; makes no sense.

That article suggest they've changed the DVD Artwork to something a little more demure and at the very least tonally correct. I actually quite like it and it's a million times better than what they had.

An improvement. I say that in a stern noncommittal voice.

I'll wait a while and see if a 2 disc pops up. Someone post the UK region 2 cover whenever you spot it, thanks.

It's good enough.
much better.

However, with one hour of featurettes, I don't know if we should expect a special edition. This is a movie that you might not want to wait on, as good as it is.

That art looks better... the original was horrid.
that is light years ahead of the first cover.
how is it possible this would even be released in a full screen edition?
This is better - that first one is just awful. Hopefully someone was fired because of that...

Why?....just WHY!? Devin go find out and write about why.

I usually wait until both R1 and R2 of a DVD is released and pick between the two, but I dont mind waiting a bit longer incase a 2 disc pops up from nowhere. I'll wait a year, I'm in no hurry.
